This tech article will show you how to replace the door check on BMW E60 models.

The door check keeps the door from opening too far and allows the door to hold an open position. When door checks begin to fail, the door will no longer stay open and tends to close on you when you release it while entering or exiting the vehicle. The welded mounting nut (in the door jamb) can also fail, leaving the door check improperly mounted. If this happens, you will need to visit a body shop to have a new nut installed.

The first step in replacing the door check is removal of the door trim panel. This is necessary in order to gain access to and remove the window regulator. Due to the presence of a side airbag in the door panel, you need to disconnect the battery before working on the panel. See our tech article on door panel removal.

Remember that when your car was serviced before, parts may have been replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have, so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.

Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If you're working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Never work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability.

If reusing the fasteners, be sure to apply Loctite on the microencapsulated fasteners. To begin, remove the window regulator. See our tech article on window regulator replacing.

Next, you have to detach the rubber seal.

Then support the door in the open position.

Then support the door in the open position. This can be done using a milk crate or apple box. Next, remove the two T30 Torx fasteners (red arrows).

Working at the doorjamb, remove the E10 inverted Torx fastener (red arrow).

Then remove the door check through the door cavity.

To inspect the condition of the welded nut, I threaded in the E10 bolt.

To inspect the condition of the welded nut, I threaded in the E10 bolt. I then tried to press it in. If the nut is secure, (obviously) it won't move. Reverse the steps to install the new door check.
