While the center armrest on the Audi A4 provides a comfortable place for both the driver and passenger to rest their arms while in the vehicle, it is a known source of frustration as the cars age. The armrest is known to fail and probably even more frustrating is the fact that the plastic trim pieces on it get broken easily.

The armrest comes as one piece and is expensive. If you are ordering a replacement, make sure to verify the color code on your car and double check you are ordering the right part. These are usually not returnable, so make sure you get the right one.

While the armrest is expensive, replacing it is simple. You should be able to swap out armrests in less than 30 minutes.

The center armrest is secured to the vehicle under the console between the front seats (red arrow).

You can now access the single 13mm nut holding the armrest to the tunnel (red arrow).

With the nut removed you can simply lift the armrest up and out from the console.

With the nut removed you can simply lift the armrest up and out from the console. You will need to tilt the armrest to clear the base (red arrow) from the trim opening. Use care not to scratch or damage the center console trim. Installation is the reverse of removal.
