Most modern cars these days no longer use a mechanical link from the gas pedal to the throttle body. What is commonly used is an electronic device that measures the position of the pedal and then sends a signal to the throttle body. This signal causes the motor in the throttle body to open and close. This is commonly referred to as "drive by wire". Over time, these modules can fail, leaving you stranded on the side of the road.

The good news is that the module is easily replaced in under an hour. In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with changing the module. I recommend disconnecting the battery before you begin. This is a safety factor that you should follow whenever unplugging a control module from the car. Please see our article on battery replacement for more information. You'll also need to remove the lower dashboard panel to gain access. See our article on Lower Dashboard Panel Removal for more information.

The accelerator pedal module (green arrow) is accessed by first removing the lower dashboard panel.

Once the mounting nuts are removed, lower the pedal assembly down from the firewall.

Once the mounting nuts are removed, lower the pedal assembly down from the firewall. Squeeze the two plastic tabs (green arrows) on the electrical connector and pull it off the top of the accelerator pedal module.

Loosen and remove the 5mm hex bolt (green arrow) holding the accelerator pedal.

Loosen and remove the 5mm hex bolt (green arrow) holding the accelerator pedal. The two upper mounting bolts can be a little difficult to see (purple arrow). You'll need to use a long extension with the 5mm hex driver to loosen and remove the upper fasteners. Once free, pull the pedal module out. Installing the new pedal assembly is the reverse order of removal.
