- What exactly is an ECU tester? An
ECU tester is used to diagnose problems with the fuel injection system on the 914.
The unit plugs into the Fuel Injection Computer (or Brain) of the 914,
and then the fuel injection harness plugs into the unit. In this manner, the unit
can check all of the components of the fuel injection system. Note, the tester we
have currently can test only the MPC injection used on the 1.7 & 2.0L cars, not the
AFC injection used on the 1.8 cars.
|
- What exactly does it test? The tester checks all of
the vital components in the fuel injection system. For a more detailed look at
exactly how the testing procedure works, check out the operating instructions
for either the Grundig ECU Tester Model VW1218, or the
instructions for the Bosch ECU Tester Model EFAW 193.
|
- What can't the testers diagnose? The testers
check only the fuel injection system. General electrical problems cannot be solved using
the tester. Connected to the vehicle, the complete system can be checked
except the fuel pressure, the auxiliary air valve, and the cold starting device.
These need to be checked via alternative means.
|
- Hmm, I'm having trouble with my 914 Fuel Injection. Where can I
get some help? The rental of the testers are a good way to go.
They can save you money by only replacing the parts that you need - not
the ones that you think you might need, but are not sure about. Of course, we can't
guarantee that the tester will completely solve every problem, but it will certainly eliminate
a lot of potential causes. Also, be sure to check out some of our technical documents on the EFI system.
|
- How much does it cost to rent? The current rates
for renting the ECU testers are $20 per day if you are local, or $50 per
week if you are located out of the area. If the tester tells you that you
need a fuel injection component replaced, we'll be happy to provide you with that part and
let you keep the tester an extra day or two to confirm that the system is operational.
|
- I live far away from Southern California. How do I rent the
tester? We can mail the tester out to you via insured UPS or FedEx.
We will have to charge you the shipping costs, and you will be responsible for the
tester's trip back to us. For all rentals, we will have to secure a credit card
number, and charge a fully-refundable deposit charge of $500. This
is to protect us against the loss or damage of this valuable unit. It is suggested
that the unit be shipped back fully insured for it's entire worth. Once the unit is
received back, we will refund your deposit minus the rental charge.

- What's this I hear about Free CO testing? We've
recently acquired a CO meter used for performing tune-ups. Most people performing
tune-ups in their garage lack this piece of equipment to properly set the mixture on their
cars. We can also check to see if your car is going to have a problem passing the
SMOG test. We will gladly test your car starting in February 1998, by
appointment only, and also be happy to discuss your car and Porsches in
general. We can give you impartial advice about what needs repair and replacement
since we don't perform any of the service ourselves.
|
- Thinking about it? Need to ask a question? Send us email, or give us a call with your questions &
concerns. We're always happy to talk with you about Porsches!
