These are the gaskets that connect the muffler to the heat exchanger. Replace them whenever you remove the muffler and they look tired. Do not use the cheesy paper gaskets that sometimes come with muffler kits. These gaskets are the real thing with metal reinforced ends.

Muffler Brackets
This is one of the most overlooked parts on the 914, yet it is one of the most important. The muffler bracket does more than just support the muffler. It supports the entire heat exchanger system and eases the load on the heads. Without the muffler bracket in place, the muffler, and the heat exchangers are hanging off the heads. If you drive the car in this condition, then the entire exhaust system will bounce up and down and will eventually break off a stud or two in the heads. This is a very common problem with 914s. It is also very common for the muffler bracket tips to break off, rendering it useless. Check yours for integrity, and replace if necessary.
