Flywheels

Lightweight Sport Flywheels
A lot of your engine's horsepower can be wasted simply by making it work extra hard to spin up the rotational mass on the flywheel. Reducing the flywheel weight increases horsepower at the drivetrain, and also makes the throttle more responsive. Our lightweight aluminum flywheels are designed to reduce as much rotational weight as possible, increasing performance without sacrificing drivability. These are steel, approximately 7.5 lbs. They have undergone salt bath ferritic nitro carburizing, which gives them the ability to withstand the most aggressive clutch discs.

High Performance Lightweight Flywheels
A lot of your engine's horsepower can be wasted simply by making it work extra hard to spin up the rotational mass on the flywheel. Reducing the flywheel weight increases horsepower at the drivetrain, and also makes the throttle more responsive. Our lightweight aluminum flywheels are designed to reduce as much rotational weight as possible, increasing performance without sacrificing drivability. The flywheel has a replaceable heat-treated steel friction surface that aids in heat dissipation, and also increases friction. All rivets and fittings are manufactured out of stainless steel for strength and resistance to corrosion.

Flywheel Bolts
These should be replaced every time that the flywheel is replaced, since they are under a tremendous amount of pressure for most of their lives. Be careful when removing the old ones. They have a very shallow 12-point star pattern on them (used to apply a very high torque without slipping), that ironically slips all the time. If they strip, then you might have to grind them off, possibly destroying your flywheel, and possibly melting your flywheel seal in one big expensive operation. Make sure that you only use the flywheel bolt socket tool when removing or installing these tricky bolts. You will also need to secure the flywheel in place with our flywheel lock.

Flywheel Seals
It's also good practice to replace your flywheel seal each time that you remove your flywheel. These seals are notoriously unpredictable, and a good seal can begin leaking simply because you 'disturbed' it removing the flywheel. Installation is easy, and is documented in our Pelican Parts Technical Article on Clutch Replacement. Use our oil seal installation tools to properly install your flywheel or pulley seal when performing a clutch job or engine rebuild. The tools enable you to insert and press the seal into its mated position without placing any undue stress on the seal. The tool basically insures that the seal will be installed straight into its mating surface, and will avoid damage to the seal that can compromise its integrity, causing leaks that are expensive to repair.

Pilot Bearings

This bearing acts as a guide for the drive shaft of the transmission. On the early cars, the flywheel pilot bearing needs to be carefully pressed into the flywheel. Beginning in 1980, Porsche installed a new type of pilot bearing that included a thick metal housing around the outside. This pilot bearing is mounted directly to the crankshaft. Every complete clutch job should include a replacement of this flywheel bearing. Pilot Bearing failure can lead to significant damage to the transmission input shaft.
