Tools and Books

You can never perform a good job on repairing your Porsche if you don't have the right tool. A lot of people try to cut corners because they either don't have the tool they need, or they don't even know that it exists! Having the right tool for the job saves time, money, and wasted effort. A job that can take 4 hours without the right tool, can take a mere few minutes with the right tool. You're already saving lots of money by doing the work yourself, spend some money and get the tool that you need. Once it's in your collection, you will not know how you got along without it!
Tie Rod End Puller
This tie rod end puller is an absolute must for removing your tie rods. It clamps down on the tie rod and pushes it out of the tapered fitting that is on the end of the strut. Make sure that you use a tool when removing the tie rod end - smacking it repeatedly with a hammer probably will not work, and most certainly will damage your strut.

Ball Joint Tools
The large castellated nut that secures the ball joint to the A-arm (901-341-425-00) should be removed either with a chisel or an impact hammer due to the incredible amount of force necessary to budge it free. This will normally render the old nut useless, and require it to be replaced along with the ball joint. This nut also requires a special tool for installation since it needs to be properly torqued to a whopping 184 ft-lbs. This specially made socket uses a 1/2" drive and is the only tool for the job.

Rear Wheel Bearing Extractor and Installer Kit
If you want to save on a costly repair, replace your own bearing or pull your own hubs with our all in one Porsche kit. Designed to efficiently remove and install hub and wheel bearings, this kit will make the notoriously difficult job of removing rear wheel bearings a breeze. The kit comes with a set of adapters specific to the 911 series, but can also be used on all front and rear wheel drive vehicles with independent suspension. The tool eliminates the need for such drastic measures such as a slide hammer or flame torch to remove the rear wheel bearing. The tool facilitates the installation and removal of the rear bearings, and makes the whole job 1000% easier.

Suspension Books
No matter what job you are performing, you can never have enough knowledge. We've compiled a list of great suspension and handling books for you to read up on while you're trying to figure out exactly how to configure your 911's suspension. Some books may be special order.
101 Projects for Your Porsche 911
Hot off the presses, author Wayne R. Dempsey gives us yet another reason to own a Porsche 911.  '101 Projects' features weekend projects that you can easily perform on your 911 in your own garage.  Ranging from difficult (overview of 911 Engine Rebuilding) to the very simple (washing your car), this book appeals to both the new and experienced 911 owner alike.  The book covers the 1965-89 911 and 911 Turbo, the 912, and is also useful for 964 (1990-94) owners as well.

Each project is detailed with an easy-to-read chart showing you exactly how long it should take, what tools you need, applicable years, and the amount of 'wrenching talent' required.  The book contains several chapters of project overviews, but mostly all of the projects are shown with step-by-step instructions.

The book is 240 pages long, and contains more than 350 Full-Color pictures and diagrams.  Here is a sample page from the shock replacement project.   Here is another page on upgrading to the 911 Turbo Look.  For those with carburetors, there's an entire project on the rebuild process.   Showing the range and breadth of projects, there is also a project on the dash pad installation.  For those with older 901 transmissions, there is a project on rebuilding first gear on your transmission.  And finally, for the really adventurous, you can try your hand at timing your cams!

All copies that are purchased through Pelican Parts will be autographed by the author.
