Suspension Bushings |
Perhaps the best thing that you can do to help an aging suspension is to replace old, brittle bushings with new high-tech, space-age, low-fat, super-duper ones. The newer bushings are made from better materials and will not wear out as easily as 25+ year old rubber ones. The original 911 rear suspension bushings are vulcanized rubber and wrap around the rear spring plate. The replacement bushings are a good alternate, but are not a direct replacement for the original factory setup. The replacement bushings rotate with the rear spring plate, and the originals actually twisted around the torsion bar. What's the difference? Sometimes the newer bushings can squeak when the car bounces. Performance-wise, they are very similar. Pelican doesn't recommend replacing your rear bushings unless they show signs of cracking and fatigue. If you want stock suspension bushings, then you need to purchase an entire rear spring arm (see below). In a similar manner, the front A-arm bushings are sold only with new A-arms, and are not available separately. You must purchase a new A-arm in order to get the original bushings. (see below) Manufacturer: Weltmeister (PolyGraphite Bushings)NOTE: Weltmeister Rear Trailing Arm bushings have the trailing arm bushing washers impregnated into the bushing. You do not need to use the OEM washer when using this type of bushing. |

Ball Joints & Hardware |
The ball joint is the small rotating joint that screws into the bottom of your A-arm, and is located directly underneath the shocks. The ball joint is responsible for maintaining a tight connection with the shocks as the front suspension moves up and down. Understandably, the ball joint is one of the highest wear items on the car, and should be replaced every 30,000-50,000 miles depending upon the wear pattern. Loose ball joints will contribute to sloppy steering, bump steer problems, vibration in the steering wheel, and unusual handling problems. Replace your ball joints in pairs if you are going over your front suspension and would like to stiffen it back up to it's original specifications.
The large castellated nut that secures the ball joint to the A-arm (901-341-425-00) should be removed either with a chisel or an impact hammer due to the incredible amount of force necessary to budge it free. This will normally render the old nut useless, and require it to be replaced along with the ball joint. This nut also requires a special tool for installation since it needs to be properly torqued to a whopping 184 ft-lbs. This specially made socket (PEL-TOL-P210) uses a 1/2" drive and is the only tool for the job.
NOTE: When installing the ball joint threaded pin, please grease it prior to installation (per Porsche service manual). The grease keeps the pin from galling when you torque the nut down. Failure to do so will cause the pin to not seat down properly, seize up in the hole and snap. This pin is not covered under warranty if not installed properly. |
