CV Joint Boots

CV Boot cracked or leaking? Replace it with a new one and keep dirt, debris and small animals out of your CV joints! The replacement process is the same as if you were removing an entire CV joint. In fact, you need to remove the joint in order to replace the boot. If you are not going to be replacing the joint, then make sure you place it in a plastic bag to avoid getting any dirt or debris in there. Check the CV joints for wear when you change the boots, and replace the joints if they are wobbly or show signs of wear. Large balls falling out of the joint when you release it are usually a bad sign. (This actually happened to Wayne)...

CV Joint Grease

Remember to lube and pack your CV joints when you replace them. Pelican carries both the LubroMoly and the Swepco 101 grease for complete lubrication of your joints. Both are very good and very slippery. Each contains more than enough grease to effectively pack all four of your CV joints from completely dry.

CV Joints & Gaskets

Are your CV joints a bit worn? Are they groaning like your stomach after a long day working on the car? Replace them with a set of new ones, and avoid messy breakdowns when they fail.

The CV joint bolts are notoriously difficult to remove. The 12-point star pattern makes them look like a torx or hex head will fit, but it usually doesn't work and you'll be cursing and using the grinder before you know it. Since these often strip out even with the proper tool, replace them if they even look the slightest bit worn.

You should always replace your CV joint gaskets when removing your CV joints. Old gaskets often get cracked or damaged upon removal. New gaskets guarantee that you won't have grease flying out the joint when you're cruising!
