Replacement Oil Lines |
| External Oil Cooler & Thermostat Lines |
This section covers all the lines that attach the engine to the front-mounted external oil cooler fitted by the factory on many 911s. These lines age with the car, and often develop leaks that can only be fixed by replacing the entire line. The thermostat referred to in the description here is the external unit located right in front of the right rear wheel (not the one inside the engine). This thermostat regulates the oil supply in these lines in order to protect the oil cooler from seeing oil pressures that are too high. These lines are only for cars equipped with a front mounted external oil cooler.
The oil lines that connect to the thermostat and run up the right underside of the car are stiff metal lines. The lines that connect the thermostat to the oil tank and the engine are two-part lines that are both flexible rubber and stiff metal. On the later cars (1984-89) with the radiator-style oil cooler, there are two lines that attach the cooler to the stiff metal lines that run up the underside of the car. The line that connects the external thermostat to the engine actually connects to another oil line (shown below) that is attached to the left side of the engine case. | Primary Engine / Oil Tank Lines |
| These are the lines that connect the engine to the oil tank. All 911s from this era had an stiff metal oil line that connected the engine block with the rest of the oil system. This "Engine Block Oil Pressure Line" exits out of the left side of the engine case, and contains pressurized oil supplied directly from the pump inside the engine. Depending upon what year 911 you have, and whether you have an external front-mounted oil cooler, you will need to get the correct oil lines matched for your 911's configuration. For cars without an external, front-mounted oil cooler, there is a small oil line that connects the "Engine Block Oil Pressure Line" to the oil tank. |
