The Porsche Factory Short Shift Kit was offered as an option (M241) during the mid-80's. It reduces the length of travel for the shift lever to move into each gear, and also provides additional room for moving the seat forward — which is especially handy if you use an aftermarket seat with extra lateral support that may get in the way. The kit reduces the shift throw by about 35%, and maintains the lateral spacing of the gears in the shift pattern — the side-to-side motion is reduced by only a small amount. This makes it more unlikely that you will select the wrong gear.
Overall, the Factory Short Shift Kit is a terrific upgrade for your 911 with type 915 5-speed transmission. It has proven to be a favorite amongst Porsche enthusiasts and racers for years, and it won't break the bank either.
