Porsche 911 (1974-89)

Throw Out Bearings
You should always throw out your old throw out bearing every time that you replace your clutch disc and pressure plate. The throw-out bearing usually lasts longer than the pressure plate and disc, however, throw out bearings can be notoriously unpredictable. We advise that you replace the throw-out bearing when replacing the disc or pressure plate because a bearing failure will require you to drop the entire engine again. Replacement of the throw out bearing is cheap insurance against failure.

Throw Out Bearing Guide Tubes
This is the guide tube that the throw out bearing is placed on. This should be replaced if significant wear is seen from the throw out bearing binding on it. Replacement of this part is cheap insurance against having to do another clutch job. For the 1987-89 Carreras, Porsche upgraded the throw out bearing guide tube and decreased it's outer diameter to 32mm. When performing your clutch job, you should check the outer diameter, and replace the guide tube if it's 32mm wide. The throw out bearing was upgraded to include a 2mm polyamide sleeve on the inside of the bearing, thus the guide tube diameter needed to be decreased by a corresponding amount. You must upgrade to the newer style guide tube, otherwise your throw out bearing may not fit.

Main Shaft Seals
The Main Shaft seal prevents transmission oil from leaking out the driveshaft into the flywheel/clutch area. This especially gets messy when the flywheel starts swinging oil around like a Texas twister! Avoid this by replacing this seal during every clutch job.

Flywheels
Every time you replace your clutch, you should inspect your flywheel. If it's scored or if there is significant wear in the surface, then you should have it checked and resurfaced. If you have any doubts, replace it with a new one. Scored or burnt flywheels will not create a good mounting surface on which to press the clutch disc, and could very well lead to your clutch slipping later on.
