Rocker arms transfer the energy from the camshafts and/or pushrods, to the valves. One end is moved by the camshaft and/or pushrod, while the other side moves the valve stem - physically moving the valve up and down.
The rocker arm is used to actuate the opening of either the intake or exhaust valve. It is essentially a pivot operated by either the camshaft lobe or a pushrod.
Upgrading your cylinder heads is a great way to improve performance. You can decrease weight and improve flow. The cylinder head is an assembly consisting of the intake and exhaust valves, valve guides, valve springs, camshaft, and spark plugs. It is mated to the top of the cylinder, and forms the combustion chamber.
