The oxygen sensor is one of the most important elements of the modern fuel injection systems. A finely tuned fuel injection system with an oxygen sensor can maintain an air/fuel ratio within a close tolerance of .02 percent. Keeping the engine at the stoichiometric level (14.6:1 air/fuel ratio) helps the engine generate the most power with the least amount of emissions.

The oxygen sensor is located in the exhaust system of the engine, and senses the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. The amount of oxygen in the exhaust varies according to the air/fuel ratio of the fuel injection system. The oxygen sensor produces a small voltage signal that is interpreted by the electronic control unit (ECU) of the fuel injection system. The ECU makes constant adjustments in fuel delivery according to the signal generated by the oxygen sensor in order to maintain the optimum air/fuel ratio.

There are a few signs that your oxygen sensor may be failing. In general, it is difficult to diagnose problems with the sensor, unless all of the other components in the fuel injection system have been checked and determined to be operating correctly. Some of the symptoms of a failed oxygen sensor system are:

  • Irregular idle during warm-up
  • Irregular idle with warm engine
  • Engine will not accelerate and backfires
  • Poor engine performance
  • Fuel consumption is high
  • Driving performance is weak
  • CO concentration at idle is too high or too low
  • Check Engine light is illuminated

In general, if the oxygen sensor is not working, the car will be running very poorly, and will also be outputting a lot of harmful emissions. On most BMWs, the engine's computer will give you a warning signal that lights up the Check Engine Lamp if the signal received by the computer is out of it's normal range.  For more info on reading these fuel injection codes, see the the Pelican Technical Article: Reading Fuel Injection Fault Codes.

If you disconnect the oxygen sensor and ground it to the chassis, the ECU will think that the car is running really lean, and will try to richen the mixture. At the other extreme, if you disconnect the oxygen sensor, and replace it with a small AA battery that supplies 1.5 volts, the ECU will think that the car is running really rich and attempt to adjust the mixture to be leaner.

Needless to say, troubleshooting the complete fuel injection system is beyond this article's scope. If you think that the oxygen sensor may be causing some of your fuel injection problems, it should be replaced. In general, I recommend that you do this every 30,000 miles. The oxygen sensor is located on exhaust manifold and/or exhaust pipes that lead to the muffler.  It's location changed and varied from year to year, but for the most part, it is easy to reach and remove.  Figure 1 shows an O2 sensor from and E36 3-Series BMW.  You will typically have to jack up the car to gain access to the sensor.  See the Pelican Technical Article: Jacking Up for more details.

Using an XXmm wrench, simply remove the sensor from the exhaust pipe.  On the E36 318, the sensor is located in a very difficult to reach spot - you may have to use a special deep socket with a slit cut in the side to remove it (Figure 2).  Figure 3 shows the electrical plug for the O2 sensor - simply rotate the plastic retainer counter-clockwise and the plug should come right off.  New O2 sensors should have the same exact plug - ready to attach to your car.  On the E36 3-Series, the plug is located towards the right side of the rear of the transmission.  Figure 4 shows the plug being removed.

When you remove the O2 sensor, you will probably find it to be black with soot, as shown in Figure 5.  This is normal for an old, worn out O2 sensor.  Figure 6 shows the mounting "bung" for the O2 sensor.  Install the sensor into the hole, making sure that it is snug tight.  If you have the proper slit-tool and a handy torque-wrench, then tighten it to XX ft-lbs (XX N-m).  It's also a smart idea to add some anti-seize compound to the threads of the plug before you install it.  Check the sensor first though, as new ones sometimes come with anti-seize already on the threads.

I have found that often the new O2 sensors come with the correct plug, but the cable is way too long.  If this is the case, then secure and tie off the cable, as is shown in Figure 7.  Make sure that the cable is not located anywhere near any exhaust components - you don't want the heat melting the cable to the O2 sensor.

Well, there you have it - it's really not too difficult at all.  If you would like to see more technical articles like this one, please continue to support Pelican Parts with all your parts needs.  If you like what you see here, then please visit our online BMW catalog and help support the collection and creating of new and informative technical articles like this one.  Your continued support directly affects the expansion and existence of this site and technical articles like this one.  As always, if you have any questions or comments about this helpful article, please drop us a line.

Jeff328iComments: Hello, I bought a universal O2 sensor that has 4 wires. It came with butt splices to connect it to the existing harness, however the OE sensor wire colors do not agree with their instructions. So I wired it from the Bentley BMW service manual based upon the pin outs, e.g. 1 = signal, 2 = signal gnd, 3 & 4 = heater example only as I do not remember the exact pin outs at this moment. Anyway I wired it per the pin out in the Bentley BMW service manual and the car is idling rough & has a solid miss. Therefore I am assuming I have wired it incorrectly electrical wiring diagram maybe inaccurate, but I thought the pin out would be correct rather than going by wire color. Any ideas?

AnComments: Hi, my 95 m3 has been running very sluggish... when i start the car, i would see white smoke coming out of the exhaust and if i let my car warm up for more than 5 minutes, the check-engine light would come up and when i drive, it would feel like the car is studdering and it would struggle to go. Yesterday at the gas station, i tried to turn my car on after putting gas and the car would start up but it would rev from .5-1 rpm then it would backfire and shut off. When i took it to the shop, they told me it was a vacuum leak, would that be the problem?

Lately I've notice when I accelerate in 2nd,3rd,4,5th gear, my car is bogging out and evens out as I go faster, Feels like the car is choking out. Could this be faulty spark plugs or o2 sensor? I thought I had bad gas, but it's not the case. Thank you, tony.

FIXComments: I just replaced the O2 on my 1995 E36 325i because my CEL came on and mysteriously went out a couple of minutes later. I pulled the stomp code after I got home and sure enough, it was an O2 code.

On my car, the sensor was located in the super hard to reach spot like in photo #2. I used the special sensor removal tool Pelican # PEL-4491B and had to fiddle around with it some to get it loose. I found it was easier to go at it from the driver's side of the car and to orient the removal tool so that the flange that fits to your rachet is on the upside and not against the exhaust pipe. Had to loosen the sensor about 1/8th of a turn at a time and use a small cheater bar, but finally was able to loosen by hand. Make sure the tool is on the sensor real well, you don't want to round the corners. Mine felt like it was just barely making enough contact, so be careful. Pretty simple job though, only took me about 45 minutes. Thanks for the write up!

Runs fine cold and then bang it gives engine light and starts running ruff. I put tester for codes and it still says #1 oxygen sensor and now it says #2 oxygen sensor is bad. Could the #2 be bad and causing a fault code on the #1 that I already changed? Possibly a bad new sensor? I am looking on where the #2 is located after the cat and how many sensors. Would you know this and how many #2 sensors their are?

I also cleaned all the electical connectors I could find in the engine compartment and on the sensor connectors.

Car runs beautifully though, so I'm a little confused as to what the issue is here. I bought 2 O2 sensors, but haven't installed them yet because the more I read the more I think that is not going to fix the CEL. LynnComments: Hi there I recently purchased a 1998 318ti from a used dealership and even though they said they changed the O2 sensor it still shuts off when idle either in park or drive. Do you think perhaps they never changed it? Could it be acid build up around the battery? Because it has that too. Can it be anything more major than that? I know the 318ti 1996 model had transmission problems. Could it be trans. Related? I really need your advice.
May 10, 2011
JesterComments: Just a bit of advise and a recommendation would be to thoroughly check system for vacuum leaks and fuel leaks as I could smell a strong fuel smell coming from the engine bay, firstly replacing fuel lines, then top end gaskets for the throttle body and intake manifold, then i pulled my injectionion system out and noticed my injectors seals were hardended and cracking so I had them cleaned and overhauled by professionals, after I reinstalled them there was no fuel smell at all, I'm guessing the cracked seals could contribute to a vacuum leak or leaks also at the point of injection. Replaced O2 sensor also and noticed my fuel consumption is down to. still have a slight miss fire. maybe due to valve wear and/or cam wear. more digging to be done.

jaymorris318Comments: hi again wayne, as previously stated i took it to the local mechanic and they had a good look, its been in there 4 days. the fault code purely comes up with 02 sensor and as stated before this did not cure any of the issues : what sort of thing can cause backfiring?? thanks
April 18, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hmm, okay let me think. Backfiring can be caused by:

- running too rich
- running too lean (both can be caused by vacuum leaks)
- low compression in a cylinder
- a coil that is not firing properly
- fouled or bad spark plugs
- Timing is off (can be caused by a faulty sensor)

So, a lot of things can cause it. You need to read the codes to see what the computer is trying to tell you. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
ednaearleComments: I have a 94 530i and have replaced two o2 sensors but the car still cuts off at light if sitting for a short time and sometimes a smell of gas is in the car.... do I need to replace the other two sensors?
April 15, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Probably not - that probably is not the problem. A gas smell inside the car means that you probably have a fuel line leak or a seal on your gas tank is leaking. I would check out the article on fuel pump replacement in our tech articles section here and see if the problem is with the seal or the pump. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
jaymorris318Comments: Hi i have a 1998, bmw e36 318 UK Model, recently the check engine light came on and it was misfiring slightly, it then backfired and blew the backbox out on the exhaust,i called the local garage and they said fuel must be sitting in the exhaust and hence the backfire, took it in and fault code read o2 sensor and they changed it for a new one. however this did not work and car still mis fires, have had a new backbox and now have a rough idle still, waiting for it to go again and cause more damage, the garage could not explain the fault and advised taking it to bmw which will cost a bomb...... any ideas or advice is greatly taken all other usual routes tried, pipes, sparks, etc thanks
April 15, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would plug it into the code reader and see if you can figure out what the computer is trying to tell you. It doesn't appear that this was an O2 problem (backfiring is not really related to the O2 sensor failures). See my tech article in this section on reading and troubleshooting codes. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

March 30, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Yikes, that's way too much - you can do it yourself for much cheaper. Although, there are indeed four on the car, perhaps they are trying to get you to replace all of them. As for the car shaking, it shouldn't have anything to do (in my opinion) with the O2 sensor. Could be something else, like a vacuum leak. It could be related to an O2 sensor, but I find it unlikely - most of the time O2 sensor problems make the car run rich or lean, not necessarily shake. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

A couple of things - 1 car will very intermittently not start, lights will come on but car won't even attempt to start. I had a tow truck come out and using his jumper cables, it started just fine. Keeps doing this every couple of days though. 2 sometimes when driving, the engine/coolant level / brake light / oil level sensor lights will come on at different times. 3 when idle for about 20 seconds, the car will start to shake a bit, getting progressively worse then will sound like it's chugging. Once when I pressed on the gas, the car was hesitant to move and then all of a sudden gunned forward. Help??!?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I had a problem with my 5-Series once where the battery would not function properly, and then it came back, and then it wouldn't work, and then it finally failed. BMW328ISComments: I have a 96' 328is and I have an error code "PS0153: Slow circuit response Bank 2 Sensor 1" Which of the four sensors is this particular O2 sensor?
March 12, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: That's an odd message, I don't think I've seen that one before. Bank 1 is typically associated with cylinder #1, and Bank 2 is typically associated with the 2nd half, which would be 4 thru 6. Sensor 1 would be the one located before the catalytic converter. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

ChrisInColoradoComments: Hello Wayne, I'm a loyal customer of yours and wanted to run something by you. I have a 97 M3 and recently pulled three CEL codes using my Peake tool. First code indicated fuel injector cylinder 3, 2nd and 3rd codes indicated AfterCat O2 Sensor heater, cyl 4-6 and AfterCat O2 Sensor Voltage, cyl 4-6. I'm going to check the relay for the O2 Sensor. I had read somewhere that the fuel injector code could cause the o2 sensor code, is this possible? Performance of the vehicle seems fine, however I am getting some grey/white some when the car initially fires up, but goes away. Is this related or do I have yet another problem on my hands? Love these cars.

Thanks
March 5, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The DME gets feedback from the injectors through the electrical signals from the coils in the injectors. So, a code indicating an injector problem is probably an electrical problem. If an injector is not functioning properly, and then causes the car to run lean or rich, then yes, that might show up as an O2 sensor error. In this case, the sensor would be reading an out of spec condition, which might be a problem with the sensor itself, or a problem with the mixture (directly related to the injectors). You can try swapping injectors around to see if the problem follows the injectors too. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

February 24, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The heaters in the O2 sensors are only used to heat the sensor when the car is cold. In general, a failure of the heater circuit will not affect the performance of the car too much - mostly when it's stone cold. The fact that you are getting additional error codes right now is probably not related to the replacement of the O2 sensors, I would guess. P030 is the same code - heater element - I would reset the codes and see if it returns. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

February 14, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Seems odd that both those codes would come up. The heater circuit on the oxygen sensors is used to heat them up when the car is cold so that you can get accurate readings right away. In all reality, this only affects the performance of the car when it's stone cold, and only for a few minutes too at startup. The codes seem to indicate problems with two sensors, which is unusual. I would reset the codes and see if they come back - having a broken heater circuit in the oxygen sensors is not going to affect the performance of your car very much at all. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
BeemerfanComments: I have recently purchased a 97 328i sedan and LOVE it. I am collecting parts to do a spring overhaul and I need to know how may O2 sensors I need. the car has 160K on it and I might as well do them all at once. Can you please let me know how many I need?
February 12, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: "spring overhaul" - I thought you were talking about shocks and springs! The E36 six cylinder BMWs have four oxygen sensors, one before each catalytic converter on each side of the car. The first oxygen sensor meters the mixture coming out of the engine. The 2nd oxygen sensor is used to measure the effectiveness of the catalytic converter. If you wanted to save money, you might replace the two forward ones, and then leave the two rearward ones alone - if you don't have a check engine lamp, then they are working fine (as all they do is check the proper operation of the cats). - Wayne at Pelican Parts

I have checked it from one end of the fuel line to the other for a fuel leak, but there isnt one, any ideas please.
January 21, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The car is obviously running very rich. I would make sure that you check the fuel injection error codes to see what the problem might be.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: The 1996 cars had On Board Diagnostics Level 2 (OBD-II) built-in so you should be able to read the codes that the car is putting out, and that should give you a clue as to what the issue is.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would just guess that it's a major vacuum leak that only shows up when the hoses are cold. When the motor heats up, the hoses expand and fill the gaps. Do a full vacuum leak test on the car and see if you can find the problem there. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
madchevalier02Comments: I just had my 06 325 in the shop and they told me that they had to change 2 o2 sensors and that I should replace the other 2. The car is running great, but the check engine light is still on. If 1 or 2 o2 sensors are bad does that mean they are all bad? Is it possible to replace only 1 or 2? Also what is a good estimate of cost of repair? 2 replace 2 they charged me $400 is that a fair cost?
December 4, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Yes, you can only replace the sensors that are giving you the error codes. The cost is okay, but it also depends upon which type they are replacing them with. OEM BMW sensors are $80-$100, and the cheaper generic ones can be as little as $20. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

My spouse told me to "drive with 2 feet" but since it's an automatic...I really don't want toburning up gas too much. He drove the car for a week and no problems...of course. But when my 19yr old and 15 yr old ride with me, we have a problem almost everytime. My husband can usually fix anything...but this. I read about the O2 Sensor and the leaks in the intake...DOes this sound like a possiblity?? My marraige-and my sanity need your help!!
November 30, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hi there. It could be one of many things. The car has a set of codes that it triggers when it finds something wrong. 99% of the time when the car stalls, it does so because it has some bad sensor readings (could be a failing component, or a failing sensor). The first step is to read the codes out of the car, and see what it's trying to tell you - what's wrong with it that's causing it to stall. I have a tech article on reading codes here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/Mult-Code_Reading/Mult-Code_Reading.htm - Wayne at Pelican Parts

November 22, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would check it against a whole tank of gas - it may be that your gas tank sender is sticking slightly and not giving you accurate ratings. Check it with a full tank and see how far you go, and see if that matches the results put out by the odometer / gas gauge. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

October 14, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don't recall 100% for your E36 which side is correct, but Bank 1 almost always refers to the one that corresponds to cylinder number one (I think that's on the driver's side, but not 100% sure). Sensor 1 is usually the one in front of the CAT. You can also unplug the sensor that you think it might be, and then check the codes again to see if you get any additional O2 sensor codes. In fact, I would probably do this regardless, just to double-check. I think some of the bonus photos in this project might show the mechanism. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

September 25, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Start with the basics - look for vacuum leaks. Usually when a car won't idle well, I've found it's because there are numerous large leaks in the intake that are causing air to escape and give faulty readings to the sensors. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
