One of the basic maintenance projects that you should perform on your BMW is the replacement of the fuel filter.  I recommend that you replace your fuel filter about once a year, or ever 10,000 miles.  It seems that with today's fuels, there always seems to be some gas station that has problems with dirt or grime in the gasoline that can clog your tank.  I don't think quality control with gasoline stations is really what it used to be.  Needless to say, I try to replace all the fuel filters at least once a year.

Changing the fuel filter is not a job that I relish.  There is an almost guarantee that you will spill at least some fuel on the ground and yourself as you swap out the fuel filter.  Perform the replacement in a well-ventilated area.  That means outdoors or in your garage with a few large fans blowing air both in and out.  Have a fire extinguisher handy, wear rubber gloves, eye protection, and have a few rolls of paper towels handy.

The fuel tank should be as low as possible - drive around the car until the gas tank is almost empty.  This will minimize problems if something should happen to go wrong.

The first step is to jack the car up.  See our Pelican Technical Article on Jacking Up for more information.  I recommend that you only jack up the front of the car, and leave the rear on the ground.  This will minimize any fuel flowing forward to the front of the car from the tank.  The E36 3-Series BMWs have a semi-intelligent design when it comes to fuel flow.  The fuel pump is located in the top of the tank, and pumps fuel out the top as well.  Why is this good?  Well, when you go to change the fuel filter, you can pull out the fuel pump relay, crank the car a few times, and be assured that fuel isn't going to flow everywhere if you make a mistake.  Some cars have a gravity-fed system that takes fuel out of the bottom of the tank.  With these systems, you have to disconnect the line, and clamp it very quickly, otherwise, the entire tank of gas will empty out!

Now, pull out the fuse for the fuel pump (Figure 1), and crank the engine a few times.  In general, this is fuse #9 on the E30 cars, and fuse #18 on the E36 cars - check your individual model first, prior to pulling the fuse.  Removing this fuse and turning over the car will help to reduce some of the fuel in the system.  Unfortunately, you can't get most of it out, and some will spill when you disconnect the fuel filter.  In addition, the filter itself will be full of fuel too.

Now, crawl underneath the car.  The fuel filter is generally in the same location for all of the cars - located on the left side of the car, somewhat underneath the engine (Figure 2, Figure 3, and Figure 4).  Also see Figure 5 for a photo of what a brand new fuel filter should look like.  You now want to disconnect the line.  I typically like to clamp the fuel line before disconnecting it as this will minimize the amount of fuel that will leak out.  However, you have to be very careful clamping the line, otherwise you may damage it.  A large c-clamp works well, or you can use Vice-Grips, but only if you cover the jaws with several layers of duct tape - this will minimize the amount of damage you will do to the line.  It's okay to squeeze the line closed tight, but you don't want to score, rip, or crack it with your clamping tools.

With both the inlet and the outlet to the fuel filter clamped, release the hose clamps on either side.  Have a small pail or bucket handy to catch the excess fuel when you release the line.  Sometimes the line will slip off, but some times it will require some coaxing.  I recommend using a small crescent wrench that fits nicely around the fuel pump inlet, but is too small to fit around the fuel line.  Wedge the wrench against the filter housing, and you should be able to pry off any stubborn fuel line.  If all fails, and you simply cannot pull the line off of the filter, then make a small 1/4" cut along the length of the line and try again.  Continue making cuts until you can remove the line.  This will minimize the amount of line that you will have to cut in order to get the filter off.

When the line is released, expect quite a few ounces of gasoline to be coming your way.  Be prepared (gloves, eye protection, paper towels, bucket, and a well-ventilated area).  Take the filter out (it's held in with a hose clamp), put it in your bucket and take it, and any left over or spilled gasoline outside of your garage immediately.  Let the garage sit empty for about 15-20 minutes before you re-enter - it will take about that long for the fumes to clear.  Then, simply reattach the new filter in place of the old one.  Tighten the clamps tight, but don't clamp them so tightly that you strip the clamps.

Well, there you have it - it's really not too difficult at all.  If you would like to see more technical articles like this one, please continue to support Pelican Parts with all your parts needs.  If you like what you see here, then please visit our online BMW catalog and help support the collection and creating of new and informative technical articles like this one.  Your continued support directly affects the expansion and existence of this site and technical articles like this one.  As always, if you have any questions or comments about this helpful article, please drop us a line.

Their is 11.74 continuity to the + side of the fuel pump plug but my test light don't light up. Of course no noise from the fuel pump either. Never gave me any kind of warning or anything. What the hell should I do next. I can't believe it just quit and all this trouble ?

AndyComments: Good Day, I have a 1999 528i E39. When I use it to tow my caravan it feels like it is suffering from fuel starvation after about 150km, to the extent that car will actually come to a grinding halt. Leave it to stand for a while and let it idle, then you are fine for a about 20km when it will do it again.
Could it be the fine gauze filter on the fuel pump causing this ?

ScottComments: .. I have a 1999 E36 328iSE Touring. Engine usually runs perfect until recently when it stopped suddenly. Started again fine but it run a little lazy with an occasional misfire. All performance lost. I figured it runs fine from cold but only would lose power and perfomance when it reached full temp. I cleaned out the ICV which was full of black soot, replaced the rubber air intake which was split, .. then followed instructionos on this site to remove 02 sensors, which I cleaned with carb cleaner. they seemed clean anyway. Car run perfect again after that, however, after extensive drive testing, it misfired again and lost power. Started again fine but I'm expecting it to happen again. - I wonder how long it takes for the ECU to learn and catch up with the fixes we make? - I'll try this fuel filter fix and hope this solves it completely... *Love this site!*

AlexComments: 1995 318ti 5-speed...135,xxx miles.

About 50% of the time the car will have a very high idle. Somewhere between 1600-2300rpms. It will drop down sometimes if I blast the A/C. If I hit the gas while it is idling high, the car will choke up, but then resume acceleration. Its almost like a stutter.

If I shut the car off while it is idling high, it will have trouble starting. I can smell gas when I am trying to crank it over and get it to start.

I have been getting poor gas mileage, and the idle is typically not steady.

Anybody have an idea what could be causing this? I am thinking I should replace the O2 sensor, TPS, and maybe the idle control unit. I wante dot check here with you guys first.

B-radComments: Hi guys, my buddy has a 1993 740i BMW and he acted like it didn't want to run one day when he turned it on. Then it finally just wouldn't start. Replaced the dual fuel filter and it started up, well when we shut it off for 20 mins or so and tried starting it back up it wouldn't turn over. I unhooked the hoses from the fuel filter to see if the pump was still kicking on and no gas came out. But when by passing the fuel pump to make sure it worked it came on but still wouldn't start. Checked the fuel relay and it was fine along with the crankcase sensor. Can any body tell me if it may be the cutoff switch to the fuel pump or what it may be. Thanks

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Your car should be able to tell you if there is a bad sensor or a problem with the fuel injection system. Take a look at my article on reading fuel injection codes, and that should give you a clue as to what the issue may be. KirkComments: Ok, I have a 1999 328i with the Dinon Performance upgrade. Recently the check engine light came on while I was driving in town. It still runs but it seems like it has lost a lot of its power. It doesn't really seem to be cutting out or mising, just don't have the "pep" it use to. So, I ask, if the fuel filter is clogged, can that cause the check engine light to come on? Thanks for your advice and time!

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You've got to check the codes and let the car tell you what is wrong with it, see this article here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/Mult-Code_Reading/Mult-Code_Reading.htm - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Michael hondrixComments: Running these engines low on fuel can damage the catalyst.
August 18, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The Subarus used to have a warning in their manual about running the cars low on gas and how it could damage the converter due to misfires happening. But this was traced back to a sump in the bottom of the tank and a one-way valve that didn't exactly function as it should. The tank would sporadically suck fuel out the bottom and then allow air in, which would cause misfires. Repeated misfires can indeed cause damage to your CATs as raw fuel is dumped in there and then ignites in the CAT instead of the combustion chamber. However, I don't think this condition exists on the E36 BMWs. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

DaveComments: 1992 e36 here, just finished with this, thanks for the writeup. I'd like to add that in some of the early e36's there's a large metal clip not a hose clamp that holds in the filter. You can undo it from the bottom - reach around and find it, I managed to get it loosened with a small socket wrench and a long 10mm.

Definitely not one of my favorite jobs, but it's doable with a little work.

jfredrickComments: I have a 2000 BMW 323ci. When I first start the car in the morning it runs fine, but when I turn off the ignition, and go to start it again a short time later it will start fine, but when I come to the first stop it dies. Then when I turn the key it cranks a couple of times and starts, and then it runs fine. It stopped doing this after I had the fuel system cleaned, but it started doing it again a couple of weeks later. No one seems to have any idea what is causing this...could it be the fuel filter needs to be replaced? Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thank you!

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like it may be a clog somewhere in the fuel system. These things are very difficult to track down. I would indeed start first with the fuel filter and then go from there down the line, checking each component in the fuel system. There may be a clog in one or more injectors too. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

mikeComments: Steve & Calvin: Exactly my symptoms. On the highway in California bumper-to-bumper traffic @80mph, the "Check Engine" light came on. Within 30 seconds, all warning lights lit up, and the engine died. Managed to coast to side of road, thru 3 lanes of traffic. Called AAA, but then got car to restart and ran great, at least to get me a mile down the road near the closest exit, where it died again.

By waiting 3-5-10 minutes each time, I was able to start & run for progressively shorter distances, to at least get off the highway to a gas station before the tow showed up.

Thinking it was bad gas or vapor lock on unusually warm spring day, I filled the tank. That's going to be a problem with this proposed fix.

Thanks for the help, Wayne. PelicanParts, the "101 Projects" book, and this site are invaluable.

SteveComments: Calvin, I dropped the car off at the mechanic and he said the same thing and what your's said. That the relay is not getting power, they bypassed it entirely and the fuel pump is not getting power. Any luck on your end?

On a positive note, the new fuel filter went in perfectly. Relatively easy to install. You do have to unscrew the top hose from the engine compartment by accessing it from between the front tire and the steering wheel.

CalvinComments: Hey steve i had the same problem, just yesterday! my car shut off while on the highway doing about 50, same exact problem, i eventually started it again, then a couple hours later it stopped again. it hasnt started since, i got it towed to my mechanic and had the fuel filter changed. he said my filter was clogged but not the propblem. he said there is no current going to my fuel pump, or some other things. The current isnt even going to the relay. so something has gone wrong at the ecu. i'm very worried. I'll keep you posted on repairs.

SteveComments: My engine turned off while driving on the freeway the other day. 1/3-1/4 of a tank of fuel. I was doing about 70, noticed my rpms drop to 0, then I had no power, then the batter and oil lights came on, power steering died. I coasted off the freeway and parked the car. Initially it wouldn't start, just kept cranking. Let it sit 5-10 min while calling a tow, tried it again and it started back up and idled for about 30 seconds before it rough idled. This sounds like the fuel filter, right? If it were the fuel pump it wouldn't have started again, would it?

VADERComments: Hello,

I have a 1995 E36 M50 325is, A week ago my baby shut off on me while I was driving. I immediately checked the codes with my code reader that I keep handy at all times. It gave me codes for the Crank Shaft Position Sensor and the O2 Sensor. I bought both Sensor's. I have installed the Crank Shaft Sensor first since the O2 Sensor would not stop the car from starting or running. I also, checked the fuel pump fuse and I replaced the fuel filter and Fuel Pump Relay while I was at it.

When I was done I Tried to start it and the car still would not start!!! I can hear the Fuel Pump noise "Hum-mm" when I turn the key, but it just Cranks without starting!!! What could be the issue?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Reset the codes, and then check again. If there is still a reading for the crank sensor, then chances are that the wire harness may be bad. Unplug the DME and check the harness with a voltmeter to see if you have continuity. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: If you have pinch clamps or non-screw clamps, then you should replace them with the ones in the photos anyways. The factory used clamps that were cheap and easy to use on the assembly line - the clamps in the photos are upgrades. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
TomMComments: Hi, I have a 1998 E36 TDI touring wagon in Ukraine. My friend says that there is crack in the plastic fuel filter close to where the fuel line come in. I have not found a picture of a diesel fuel filter in your site and I'm wondering what they are talking about since the gas fuel filters are made from metal. I have a manual in English here but it doesn't show the fuel filter on a diesel. It seems that in this country we don't know their diesel engines very well because there is little information and less pictures about them.
