BMW Convertible Top
Adjustment and Repair

Difficulty Level: 8

The BMW convertible top is one of the most complicated systems on the car. A lot of people have problems with their convertible tops. Some problems are easy to fix, while others are much more complicated. The E36 convertible top contains a plethora of switches and sensors that tell the convertible top controller when and how to lower the top. If any of these sensors stop working, it can render your entire top inoperable.

One of these sensors checks the position and operation of the window. If your window is stuck in the up position, you won’t be able to lower your top (see Project 70). Another annoying problem that often occurs is with the trunk. The lock on the trunk is connected to the top system, and when it fails, you’ll find that you can’t lower the top when the trunk is open, or open the trunk if the top is not fully closed. If you have any problems with your trunk wiring (see Project 82), they can stop the top from lowering. In a similar manner, sometimes the headliner can get caught when you close the roof and keep the convertible top cover from closing all the way. This will prevent one of the convertible top microswitches from closing, which in turn will prevent you from opening the trunk. If you can’t get into your trunk when your roof is down, try pushing down on the convertible top cover, and it should trigger the switch.

BMW makes at least seven different repair kits that can be used to fix parts of the roof that may have worn out or become broken. Photo 1 shows six of these seven kits and what they aim to repair.

FYI, the parts system for BMW cars (known as “ETK”) is very unclear when it comes to what is included in these kits, so I ordered all of them just to see what came with each kit. All are now available from PelicanParts.com. They are displayed in Photo 1, and a brief description follows:

A: Column C Ceiling Insert Repair Kit (part number 54-31-8-211-902). Contains: Column C inserts and crimp rings. This kit contains both a left and right insert to repair the delicate piece that folds out of the way when the top is lowered. The red arrow in Photo 3 shows this plastic piece that folds into the headliner material. The small tabs on the insert piece often get caught and break off, such that the top must be lowered in steps to avoid having the headliner catch on the frame. Replacement of these pieces requires you rethread some of the rope in the top assembly.

B: Internal Headliner Repair Kit (part number 54-31-8-227-354). Contains: Screws and reinforcement clips. My own car needed this kit to repair a tear in the headliner. In Photo 1, you can see the three long, plastic rails that snap the headliner onto the convertible top. The headliner and rails can break, letting the headliner sag. These metal clips grab onto the existing plastic rails and use screws to reattach the headliner so it won’t sag anymore. One kit should cover the entire headliner. (See BMW technical bulletin 54 04 96 (091).)

C: Column C Ceiling Tension Rope Repair Kit (part number 54-31-8-189-989). Contains: Tension rope, Torx bolt, tension spring, brackets, and lead seal. This kit contains the parts necessary to repair the inner rope on one side of the Column C insert. This rope can be viewed in Photo 3, and I recommend replacing the inserts as well (repair kit A).

D: Column C Cover Tension Rope Repair Kit (part number 54-31-9-068-572). Contains 1,000 millimeters tension rope and five aluminum links. This is replacement rope for tension ropes located in the C column of the convertible roof. Follow the instructions included with the kit to repair the ropes, and be sure to melt each end of the rope to avoid fraying.

E: Repair Kit Column C Cover Insert (part number 54-31-8-209-781). Contains: Column C insert, reinforcement angle, two different sizes of rivets, blind rivet adapter. This kit is used to repair separation of the canvas top from the frame, around the outer edges. It requires the use of a rivet gun, but the repair is pretty straightforward and documented in the included instructions. (See BMW technical bulletin 54 01 95 (891).)

F: Repair Kit for Corner Bow Tension Spring (part number 54-34-8-201-077) Contains: Two tension springs, washers, Torx screws. This kit contains the parts needed to replace the tension springs shown by the light blue arrow in Photo 3. If these springs break or weaken, it can affect the ability of the roof to raise and lower itself properly. If renewing your roof, you should replace these springs.

Folding Top Frame Hinges (not shown – part number 54-31-8-220-564) Contains: Hinge set and bolts. The hinge set is expensive ($250) and is only needed if your convertible top frame hinges have been bent or damaged.

Shown here is a sampling of the repair kits described in the main text.
Figure
Figure 2
This photo shows the convertible motor linkage, which is located under the large, hinged convertible top cover. You can access this area by pressing the top-down switch and letting the cover rise up all the way. The blue arrow points to the cam that drives the bottom part of the convertible top. This is the part that lifts up so the convertible top cover can be raised. If the convertible top cover hits the edge of the top when the roof is being lowered, you can adjust the linkage to push the bottom part of the cover back further (green arrow). While you’re in this area, check to make sure your convertible top motor screws are tight (they were loose on my car when I checked them; yellow arrows).
Figure
Figure 3
The left side of this photo shows the right-side latching mechanism for the convertible top cover. The yellow arrow shows one of the springs that often wear out after many years of use—unfortunately, it’s not a part you can order separately, so head to a good hardware store for a replacement. The green arrow points to one of the infamous microswitches, which should be checked first if you have unexplained problems raising or lowering your top, or opening your trunk. On the right are two areas commonly repaired using the kits in Photo 1. The Column C inserts are shown with the red arrow, and one of the bow tension springs is shown with the blue arrow.
Figure
Figure 4
With the convertible top cover raised, you can also see the bow mechanism located toward the front of the car. The yellow arrow shows one of the finicky microswitches that should be tested first when having unexplained problems. If the roof is not lowering or raising the proper amount, you can adjust this by turning the adjustment turnbuckle shown by the green arrow.
Figure
Figure 5
This is the handle of last resort. Many convertible owners don’t know this, but there is an emergency roof release handle located underneath the rear seat. Usually, you can fish around and pull out the red strap, but if you can’t, simply pull up on the rear seat, and it will pop right out. Pull on the handle to disconnect the roof mechanism and cables from the two motors. You should then be able to manually raise the roof with your hands. Don’t lower the roof if the cables are disconnected—the convertible roof top cover can catch the wind and fly open while you’re driving!
Figure
Figure 6
One of my favorite options for convertible owners is the color-matched hardtop. This top fits on your car with the top down and turns it as close to a coupe as you can get. The top is perfect for people who love convertibles but have to drive a significant number of miles in cold and inclement weather where top-down motoring just isn’t practical. The tops are quite heavy and not that easy to install on the car, so plan on using two people and spending several minutes getting it installed. New tops are about $2,300 from BMW (color-matched to your car), but you can usually find a used one if you look around. If your car didn’t come with one originally, you’ll need the factory installation kit (part number 54-21-8-163-061).

There is also no light on the switch when pressed in either direction. everything works fine, except the two coils on either side that connect to the motor located in the middle of the car right above my head on the other side of the plastic panel where the convertible top connects.
thank you for any help!

SamComments: Hey guys -
I have an '88 325ic. The convetible top is operated manually. The locking mechanism on one side is malfunction. AFter checking it, I found it to be loose and out of alignemnt. It looks like the "easy" fix is to just tighten the two bolts that hald the mechanism into place. My question is, how do you access them to tighten? My concern is tooling around town, the failure to lock in place is not much of a problem. When out on open highway, say, ummmm doing the speed limit :, it tends to vibrate. I'm afraifd it might effect drivers dide mechanism and the cover would fly off.
Your expertise greatly appreciated

BobComments: Hello. I have a 1995 328 e36, I thought I had recently got to grips with what everything does on the roof. I have reset the motors and everything seemed good. However, when putting the roof up after a reset the cover raises, the canvas comes forward, but then the cover will not fold down! I know both motors are working. I imagine that it is to do with a microswitch but of the 3 I know about the one in the boot, the one in fig 3 and the one in fig 4 none seem to be required for this bit of the process. Is there another microswitch anywhere that may be preventing this? Have you come across this problem before.

JBlackComments: I just bought a 1999 323i E36 with mechanical convertible top and opened the top while the trunk was up. $%^*!. Isn't there supposed to be a safety to prevent this? Now the lid for the convertible top and the trunk lid are stuck together and neither will budge. The convertible lid won't go back down.
Should I attempt to do this manually? I assume it will NOT because you cannot lock the top into place if you are working it manually.
I am assuming the only way to fix this is to unbolt the trunk lid and take it far enough off for the convertible lid to function. Is this the best way to address the situation and will the mechanical device still function after this experience? Thanks for any advice or help!

I think the lid motor needs to be re-sync?????Also auto trunk release is not working thinking the lid switch is causing this???? I can fix almost anything- please help....I have given up...Need a pro's advice. P.S. I read the article on syncing the 2 motors for power top and where the release cable is, but I can't seem to find cable release under rear seat.

CateQComments: Me again from the UK. I tried to reset the roof and the tonneau cover motor won't click back into place. Clearly something wrong and I believe that the guys who have been resetting the roof for me have been working around it rather than fixing the issue. This would explain why the roof fails too. Sorry - not mechanic - the little black lever with the eye holding the release cable that releases the tonneau motor when you pull the handle under the back seat is the failing part. Has anyone faced this before? Best wishes.

CateQComments: I have a new V-reg 323i convertible. For the third time, when attempting to open the roof, the motor operating the roof has "crunched". This brings the whole opening sequence to a halt. The chap I've bought it off always fixes it for free, but this involves a 200 mile round trip. I've manually closed the roof by releasing the cables using the lever under the bench seat, and by using the allan key. I have pushed back the motor located to the left behind the boot trim into place. Where is the second motor - does anybody know? I need to put this back into place then I can re-set I've found instructions on how to do this, so the motors re-synch. I've looked everywhere in the boot for it. THEN, I need to work out what the problem is......... I'm not going to let this beat me.

I thought it was an allignment fault with the lid but looks like it is a trim piece not folding correctly? Any help appreciated. Thanks. Neil

DizmanComments: I have an E36 99 M3 vert I got about year ago. It's the fully automatic top, it works fine going up but it needs help going down. The previous owner showed me this, when putting the top down I have to reach back and grab where the rear windows creases and pull it forward as it only goes up slowly on it's own and no where near enough to clear the boot lid when it opens. BUT when I go to put it back down, the window part of the roof opens fine and clears the lid. Also when it's down a good inch or two of the roof sticks out in the center area, where the window is, so the lid doesn't close completely though enough, as you wouldn't notice if I didn't point it out.

The previous owner told me that the shop he took it too, that they said it's the tension belts are worn/shot, and it was REALLY expensive for them to fix it. A year later it's finally annoying me and I wanted to know if that sounds true or if maybe it's something cheaper that needs replacing OR if it just needs some adjustments.

Also the clip on the plastic headliner part in the front, on the passenger side snapped, making me think it needs some adjustments, as since only one side snapped/broke seems like the top is going down slightly crooked.

Thanks for any help!

However, I'm not sure if that is what you're looking for exactly. The past week or so I have had an issue with the storage lid cover opening up on its own when the top is down. I can be stopped at a light or happens during driving and kind of annoying to see the storage lid opening on its own. Sometimes it will open just a little, and other times it opens a significant amount, about 7 inches or so from its down/level position.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: It's tough to say, but I had a similar problem with my car. The issue turned out to be that the trunk switch was faulty or dirty. The car thought that the trunk was open, so it wouldn't lower the roof (of course it doesn't tell you that either). Check the trunk switch and that might be an easy fix for your problem. Also, faulty wiring to the trunk can also cause this - it's a big problem on the E36 cars. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don't like convertible issues - they can be very difficult to diagnose. In this case, either the adjustment of the top is off, or one of the microswitches in the mechanism probably needs ajustment. I then took the car to a local shop that did convertable tops not wanting to go to the dealer and as they say give my right leg. when I got it back it looked great but the top wont go down. now I have to take it to the dealer to see what they broke. In addition, they lost a lot of the screws an replaced them with wood screws, they lost the clips which hold the front pannel that covers the head liner above the windshild, so they used very visible wood screws and super glue to hold it on. now I'm going to the dealer an taking them to small claims court in Orange County.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: I found this on the site, eabjr.com regarding re-syncing the convertible top roof for the E36:

Resetting the Convertible Top
This is the procedure to reset the E36 convertible top in case you have used the emergency release handle that's located under the rear seat. This works on my '97 328iC, which has the fully-automatic top. It may also work on other E36 models and years (caveat emptor). The owner's manual says to take the car to a dealer for service, but why do that when the procedure is so easy?

The owner's manual describes the method for closing the top manually, presumably in case you have a dead battery with the top down and it starts to rain. The top mechanism is driven by two electric motors that are located in the trunk -- one for the lid of the storage bin and one for the top itself. Closing the top manually requires (1) releasing the two motors from their transmission drives (using the afore-mentioned lever, which through a cable release mechanism causes the motors to pop away from their drives), pulling the top out of its storage bin, and then using an Allen wrench (from the tool kit in the trunk) to fully close and lock the top to the windshield. The allen wrench gets inserted into a socket that's hidden behind a plastic cover at the leading edge of the top, and then you turn it many many times to simulate the action of the electric motor. Note - there are interlocks between the storage bin lid and the trunk that prevent you from opening both at the same time.

Once the two motors have been disengaged, the top can only be operated manually -- the LED in the control switch blinks, and the owners manual says you have to take the car to the dealer to reset the correct operation of the top. The reason is that the two electric motors have to be re-engaged with their drive mechanisms and also re-synchronized with each other (you wouldn't want the top to crash into the lid of the storage bin).

Never fear, there is a fairly easy way to reset all of this yourself. The following is courtesy of Brett Anderson, who came to my rescue on this topic. I was having a new subwoofer and amplifier installed in the car, and the installer had the rear seat out when he decided to pull on the release handle to see what would happen (it has a red tag on it that just seems to scream "pull me" -- who could resist?).

1. First, manually open the top as described above (the motors must first be disengaged - so if the red hadle hasn't been pulled, now is the time to do so). Place the top back into its storage bin, and then close the lid of the bin as far as it will go.
2. Open the trunk so you can get access to the motors. You may need to push down on the storage bin lid so that it closes far enough to allow you to open the trunk - there's a safety interlock that prevents the trunk from being opened if the lid is open at the same time.
3. Working inside the trunk, remove the carpet liner from the left side (driver's side) of the trunk. There are two plastic clips that hold the liner in place -- you can pry them out with a screwdriver.
4. Behind the liner are the two motors that work the top mechanism -- one drives the top and the other is for the lid. Each motor is mounted on a spring-loaded pivot mechanism. The gears on the motors normally engage the gears for their respective transmission mechanisms, but when the release lever is pulled the motors pop away and disengage. So you have to push the motors back into their original positions so that the gears re-engage. When you do this the spring-loaded catch mechanism will firmly latch in place. Be sure that the motors arefirmly seated into the drive, and not just partially engaged.
5. Once both motors are re-engaged, get into the car, and with the ignition key in the off position press and hold the top control switch in the up (for closing) position. Continuing to hold this switch, turn the key to the "accessory" position (without starting the car) and hold it there. After about twelve seconds the lid will be sucked down into the locked position, and then after a few more seconds the top will start its normal closing procedure.
6. The motors are now re-synched, and should be all set. Work the system a few times to ensure that both motors are properly engaged and all is well.[/quote]

Followup from the Pelican Staff: The cowl switch should be located right below the cowl (or clamshell) in the rear convertible compartment. Obviously, it's not releasing and the roof computer thinks that the clamshell is down and thus won't open the roof. You probably need to remove this switch and replace it, or at the very least, clean the contacts on the switch. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

GregComments: I have a 1998 E36 convertible. Last time I put the top up the closing sequence was almost complete when this god-awful noise came out of the rear LH corner under the clamshell.
The noise sounded like a dog-clutch jumping or a gear jumping in and out of mesh.
I let the switch go but the noise continued and lite kept flashing.
The only way to stop the noise was to turn off the ignition.
Turned on ignition again and there was no noise but lite started flashing again.
Also noticed that the windows didn't raise again either during the top closing operation. But can raise and lower them ok using the window switches.
Now the lite flashes as soon as the ignition is turned on and if I operate the switch the noise starts again, requiring the ignition to be switched off then on again to stop it.
I'm hoping that it's something as simple as a limit switch not tripping ....
I have noticed that the front windows on some occasions seem to have a mind of their own and start lowering again during the raising operation. Could the two problems be connected or related???
Any ideas please on what the cause is and how to fix this
March 2, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Again, I'm not a huge fan of convertible problems. The noise you heard is bad news, and probably means that something jammed or something became broken. You might try releasing the mechanism using the emergency release under the rear seat and then realigning the mechanism using the technique I posted recently in our forums: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/101-projects-discussion-forum-bmw-3-series-e30-e36-1982-2000/596553-e36-convertible-top-reset-after-manual-pull.html - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hmm, I'm not 100% sure. I believe that all of the E36 tops are very similar, however, I've never heard of or seen a manual top - all the ones that I have seen are power tops.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: Right - there is a semi-complicated factory procedure to reconnect the roof to the mechanism after you pull that emergency lever under the seat. In addition, the roof needs to be adjusted and synchronized with itself. I haven't done it myself, but I have heard it's not a five minute job. I would take the car to someone who has done this before and let them snap it back together. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: There are a few things that can go wrong with the convertible roof. Firstly, you must make sure that your switches are all operating properly. The one switch that was an issue with my car was the trunk switch. If the car thinks the trunk is open, then it won't lower the roof. This switch can fail from years of use, and it is also susceptible to problems with the trunk wiring (see Figure 2 in this article: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems.htm) I would start looking there first. Also, if your windows are stuck or non-operational, then the roof will not open either. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: The clamshell that covers the back opens and closes with a pretty simple linkage that can be adjusted. I don't have any handy photos, but if you open the roof 1/2 way you can see the linkage in there, and you can also see the adjustment screws. I would try looking in there. Also, if at one time something clogged or got stuck in the roof, then there is the possibility that the linkage may have been bent. You may still be able to readjust it if the linkage is slightly tweaked though. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: It's been a few years since I've taken a look at this. I think the switch is part of the rear trunk locking/latching mechanism. You should see two wires coming out of the latch that are connected to a small switch there. Check the continuity across these two wires as you close the latch (use a screwdriver to fool the latch into thinking it's closed). I no longer have any E36 cars (only 5-Series right now), so I can't run out into the driveway to check this. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

The existing vinyl top has shrunk so much that the weather strips on the driver's side window and the passenger side window are exposed. sueComments: I have a 1998 3 series. I have had my motor to my toprully replaced, new straps and completely new installed top. When BMW replaced the motor the top partially open and I had to help it along to complete the process. They explained I would have to have my top replaced because the straps were not strong enough to make the complete transaction. As I stated,I had both straps and top replaced "new" and it still does not work properly. My trunk latch has recently been replaced also. I mention this because of other comments on you site. The top lowers to the point where the back meets the boot cover and stops. I have taken it back 3 times and they say it is fixed. As soon as I get it home it is not working. Please help.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hi there. I wish I could help, but these top problems are very difficult to diagnose even when the car is right in front of me. Sounds like too much friction in the mechanism, you'll have to track down the sticking points and then see what the problem is. Also, check to make sure the motor is firmly mounted to the chassis - mine was loose which caused issues. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

August 31, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don't have any instructions on this, but you might want to just swap the whole mechanism - I think that would actually be easier than trying to swap the actual top from one frame to another. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
DApplegateComments: 98 328I the top starts the process by disengaging from the car and begins to fold back. The problen seems tobe that the boot does not open to complete the cycle. The problem comes and goes so I do not believe it is the motor. But were to start?
August 31, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like there is something slipping in the linkage to raise the rear boot. I would take a closer look while it's going up or down, and feel the strength of the boot to see if it's wobbly or loose as it's being raised. Then hunt around for a loose/worn/broken piece of the linkage. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Tenn EdComments: All of a sudden, My M3 convertible top will not retract.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: Convertible top problems are very difficult to diagnose, even if you have the car right in front of you.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: You should be able to adjust the mechanism for the cover so that it doesn't sag. This is pretty common on these old cars - see all the questions in this section. Over the years, the roofs get out of adjustment and need some realignment. I guess I really need to do an article on how to accomplish this (one day). - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Definitely check the microswitches, particularly the one for the trunk. The roof will not open at all if the trunk switch is not working properly.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: Tops are difficult to troubleshoot. It could be that your mechanism is getting old, and has some "stickiness" to it that is slowing down the motor. Or, it could be that the motor is wearing out. The first step I would take is to take a look at the entire mechanism and clean / grease every moving joint that I can reach. Also check where the roof motor mounts to the car - this was loose on my car, and caused some problems like this. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

August 3, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I've seen this before, but I don't still have my convertible, so I don't have one to refresh my memory. In this case, the mechanism is triggering the microswitches to stop the motors too early. There should also be some adjustments in the roof mechanism to assist as well. These roofs are very tricky, and I would try to find someone who knows how to adjust them (dealer). It's not really a good DIY project, as it's easy to mess these up and make them worse. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Howzer Comments: Hi, I have 1995 325i Everything on the top seems to work in the right order but it is a very slow- not enough power bit seems it will go 95% up but fails to go tight on the trunk lid. Leaving about a 2 inch gab. Has this shrunk and so can it be stretched back. Thanks for any info
August 2, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like the mechaism is putting a big load on the motor, or the motor is getting old and wearing out. I would see if you can disconnect the roof from the motor with the emergency pull and then realign / reattach the cables. Check to see if the roof mechanism is sticky or difficult to move by hand. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
WesComments: I am pretty sure that I need to replace a worn out microsensor for my 98 e36 convt. top. Do you know where the sensor is that triggers the top's compartment lid to close and do you guys sell it? thanks
July 29, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I think it's located on the mechanism for the lid itself, and you can adjust it by bending the contacts (if that is the switch that is having problems). We sell that too, have sales help you out at 1-888-280-7799 after you find where it's located. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: The Z3 has a hydraulic system that I'm not very familiar with, but I would suspect that some microswitch somewhere is triggering early, causing the roof to stop. I would take a closer look at the mechanism and see if you can find where this is happening. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
LynnComments: Can you tell me if there is a trick to manually lowering the top on a 1998 328i convertible? The top is not working, but I tried to disengage the lift motors to replace the rear window. I have the old rear window out and need to releive tension so I can zip in the new window.
The rear section seems to be locked in position and I can find no way to unlock it to make it fold up. I have used the key to release the top from the windshield and disengaged the top lift motors by pulling the release lever under the back seat.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: If you're talking about the rear clamshell, I believe that it can be manually disconnected from the mechanism. You can also manually turn the motors in the rear trunk to manually dial it down if need be. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
HunterComments: I have a 328i Convertible that when I put the top down the the bottom rear of the roof the metal bar that goes flush against the car below the rear window hits the convertible compartment lid! So as the lid opens and the cover proceeds in, it smacks the lid right in the middle. I've checked the shock that attaches to the lid arm - it's very much so pressurized and working. When the lid is vertical it has a little bit of play in it. I dont know if you can adjust the motor the one in the port aft side of the trunk to lift the convertible compartment lid more vertical - that would solve the issue! How can I eliminate that play and make the lid lift a little so the top doesn't come crashing on it as it tries to tuck itself away
July 25, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hmm, I unfortunately have sold my convertible, so I don't have one here to look at. But, if I remember correctly, the lid position and orientation is adjustable with some screws in the back. I think they may have come loose. BobSCComments: I have a 2001 E46 330Cic. I am experiencing some wind noise at the top of the rear windows on both sides of the car. It appears to me that if the window went up another 1/2 inch or the top came down a 1/2 inch it would eliminate the problem. Is there any adjustment on the top that I could do that would lower it slightly to match up better with the window?
July 14, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Not that I know of, but the height of the windows are adjustable. See the window project in our main tech articles page for more information. If it's happening on both sides of the car, that seems to indicate to me that there may be another problem with the roof though. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You can pull the emergency pull handle under the rear seat, but that is typically used to get the top up when it's down, not down when it's up.

Sounds like it might be a microswitch or two - there are several that give inputs to the controller. Also, make sure the rear trunk switch is operational, as the roof will not open with the rear trunk open. Hope this helps... - Wayne at Pelican Parts
beemerdudeComments: Ii advised you of a problem with a clicking sound heard in the trunk area upon depressing the top down button on my 1996 328i, e 36. The problem in this case was the boot lid motor, since it was replaced, all is fine.
My comvertible top guru told me the motor failed because the tension straps were worn and the rear bow used to hit the boot lid conv. top cover over time, this damages the gearing in the non serviceable motor.

June 6, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I'm not super familiar with these roof mechanisms, but I believe they are hydraulically controlled, which would make sense as hydraulic systems are affected by heat sometimes. There is a reservoir in the trunk of the car for the roof - I would start by checking the fluid in there. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

May 18, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Convertible tops are notoriously difficult to fix. You really need to find someone who has fixed these before. Something as simple as a broken trunk switch sensor can stop the entire roof from working, and there is no computer (that I'm aware of) that will give you the reasons why the roof is not going down. It's one of my least favorite things to work on. I wish I had better info for you. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
BeemerDudeComments: I have a 1996 328i conv., recently the boot lid would not raise for me to close the top. I had to pull the emergency release to do so. The next day, I put the top back down manually to troubleshoot the problem. I reconnected the drives motors pressed the conv. top button and a loud clicking sound was heard, I was able to access the trunk while this was going on and applied pressure to the boot lid motor and its frame, as I saw it vibrating. The clicking stopped and the boot lid raised, then the top then operated properly. If i do not hold the motor in closer or tightly the problem repeats. What may be the problem? Perhaps a bad motor assembly or the transmission thingy it connects to?

May 1, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Good question. I think so. The central locking system can control the up/down motion of the windows, which is also controlled by the roof button, so the two definitely work together. Maybe one relies on the other to activate the windows. Try rolling down the windows all the way and seeing if the roof then will work? - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Discovered tonneau motor seized up. Wouldn't engage, re-engage. Took motor out, tapped with hammer and got it moving. Re-engaged both motors. When went to re-synch, wait for a few seconds, the toneau cover goes down, then I just hear a click, click, click coming from the trunk near the motors. Don't think gears are stripped. Is there an adjustment that I am missing? Hard to see what is going on since the trunk has to be closed when resynching. Any hints?

theworm550Comments: Here's one for you. Operationally everything works when opening and closing my top. Meaning that yes the top goes up and will go down. The windows will work too. Here's the kicker. When I put the top down the everything but the physical top thinks I'm trying to put the top up. So I unlatch the top release press the "down" button. Windows go down half way, back of top goes up. Cover panel goes up then the top starts to retract. Right about here the cover panel thinks it should go back down. Everything is all mixed up on what it should be doing at this point. I have to manually lift the back of my top, push the cover panel back and somehow press the "down" button using my toe :- It's like I just need to put the top all the way up and tell the car YES the top is up right now. Which will reset it back to normal. Any way of doing this? I was thinking about disconnection the battery and seeing if the computer resets as my first step.

steveComments: Have a 1995 E36 convertible that "goes to sleep" during top reset. I follow procedures and the boot cover motor sucks the cover down fine, but nothing happens after this. In other words, the cover does not open again and the top motor does not raise the top out of the well.

The little plunger to the left of the trunk latch turns off the trunk lights when I press it in. Is this also the microswitch for the trunk latch? I think we are talking about S5 here?

Thanks!

October 22, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I honestly can't remember if the trunk switch is integrated with the lock mechanism, or if it's located more towards the front of the car. I've worked on too many cars with too many problems to remember exactly. :) I do know that the trunk wiring has a bad design (see the article here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems.htm ). I would check out the trunk lock switch located in the actual lock mechanism first, before doing anything else. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
ColinComments: I have a 1995 325i convertible. My roof is closed but will not retract. One of the motors makes a knocking/whirring sound when I press the top-down button, but the roof compartment lid does not open. Does the sound indicate a problem with one of the motors or is this sound normal on such occasions? I have a feeling the problem may be due to a trunk lid issue that arose when I overstuffed the trunk the problem started immediately after, but I'd like to know if I'm on a wild goose chase before I pursue that angle.
October 22, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It's not the motor, it's part of the mechanism. You might have something still stuck in there from when you stuffed the trunk. I wouldn't try to open it any more, but I would take a closer look in the trunk to see if you can see anything in there that might be causing trouble. The lid lift mechanism works very close to the trunk compartment. There may also be something that got stuck and broken. Most likely a linkage problem... - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Probably one of the strings / cables in the car are broken or need adjustment. You need to fish around in there to see which one is causing this (compare to the other side), and then see if you can replace or tighten it).  Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don't like these either. The problem on my car was that the trunk switch was broken, and causing the computer to think that the trunk was open all the time (ironically, it's not the same switch that powers the light in the trunk, etc.). Bottomline, check all of your microswitches in your roof - they might be telling the roof something that it doesn't expect to see. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Depending upon what car you have, you should have a drain right over there so that the water will drain down to the street - not your passenger footwell. I would double check in the engine compartment to see if leaves or something else has clogged your drains. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

I had a problem with a jam and pulled the handle under thee seat. I have put he motor back in place in the trunk and the main roof mechanism now works fine. The problem is the cover won't move automatialy. I assume this too has been disconnected by pulling the lever. How do i reconnect?
Also the back of the hood does not seal properly when in the raised position, there is a gap of about half an inch. How could this be resolved and what parts do i need.
Many thanks

Followup from the Pelican Staff: This is most likely a problem with one or more of the microswitches present in the system. It also might be related to faulty wiring in the trunk (see the other article on this website). I would check and/or replace each of the switches in the system. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I like to use 3M SuperWeather Strip (the yellow stuff, not the black stuff). It works so well that if you glue fabric together, and then try to take it apart, it will rip the fabric, rather than separate where the glue is. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

MikeComments: My problem posted on July 29 is very similar to Gary's posted on August 11. I too eventually discovered that pushing the front of the top gently backwards keeps the top opening.

Lately the top has operated perfectly. Not sure if it relates, but the only thing that has changed is the access cover on the passenger side squarish and moves forward-back to provide clearance during top operation popped out when someone leaned on it. I have not had time to work on it so I removed it completely, including the spring and rod that hold it in position. I can't see yet how this might be helping the top problem, but haven't had an issue dropping the top since removing it.

Hope to re-install the cover plate soon and will report if the problem comes back afterwards.

I have a 1999 328ic. The convertible top works fine most of the time, but lately I have been having a problem with the switch. I press the switch to lower/raise the roof and nothing happens - the indicator light does not go on - nothing. If turn off the car & wait a bit then try again everything works fine. Could I simply need to replace the switch or could it be something else? Any suggestions on how to approach this would be appreciated. thanx

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I hate working on roofs, there is no diagnosis system that I am aware of to determine faults. There are a bunch of microswitches in the roof that can fail, and when they do, it stops working without warning. The most confusing one of all may be the trunk lock switch - if the trunk switch is open, the roof will not go down. Couple that with the wiring faults in the trunk lid (see the other article on electrical problems), you may have a broken wire harness affecting the roof operation. Tough to know these things without experience. Take a look at the trunk wiring - that's what I would do first. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

GaryComments: Hi Wayne,
My name is Gary. I own a automotive repair shop and I am working on a 2002 BMW 325Ci Convertible top that will not go down with out some assistance. When opening top the front bow unlatches from windshield frame and goes up as the rear bow goes down the front bow starts falling down. At that point the top will stop working unless you push up slightly on the front bow by hand. After assisting the top at that point, the top will continue to operate normaly going down. Complete closing cycle is normal. Do you have any idea what is causing this and what would be necessary to repair this problem.
August 11, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I wish I could help, but it's nearly impossible to diagnose something like this over email. Typically when the roofs don't work too well, there's something obvious that has snapped, or worn or broken. Sometimes it's difficult to find it inside the roof though - I would triple check everything in there and look for a broken strap or piece. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
MikeComments: What would cause my 1997 328i convertible top to only partially retract? This is an intermittent problem, as the top will go down just fine for weeks, and then not for at least a few days.

It begins the process, detaching from the windshield, opening the compartment and beginning the decent into the compartment. But, but as the back of the top touches in the holding area, it seems like the frame is locked so it does not continue folding into place.

At first I thought it was due to my loose straps not pulling the lower section fully forward and allowing clearance of the opening lid. I thought this might provide a mechanical release of the joint, since I can feel it sort of pop into the fully open position when I pull it. But manually helping it fully moving forward to clear the lid does not fix the issue of the final fold into the compartment.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Crazy, but it might be the switch for the trunk. That happened to my car. If the roof thinks the trunk is open, then it won't allow you to put the roof down. There is some bad wiring in the trunk that gets crimped (see the electrical problems project), and that may affect the trunk switch too, which then stops the roof from opening! - Wayne at Pelican Parts
