The BMW convertible top is one of the most complicated systems on the car. A lot of people have problems with their convertible tops. Some problems are easy to fix, while others are much more complicated. The E36 convertible top contains a plethora of switches and sensors that tell the convertible top controller when and how to lower the top. If any of these sensors stop working, it can render your entire top inoperable.

One of these sensors checks the position and operation of the window. If your window is stuck in the up position, you won’t be able to lower your top (see Project 70). Another annoying problem that often occurs is with the trunk. The lock on the trunk is connected to the top system, and when it fails, you’ll find that you can’t lower the top when the trunk is open, or open the trunk if the top is not fully closed. If you have any problems with your trunk wiring (see Project 82), they can stop the top from lowering. In a similar manner, sometimes the headliner can get caught when you close the roof and keep the convertible top cover from closing all the way. This will prevent one of the convertible top microswitches from closing, which in turn will prevent you from opening the trunk. If you can’t get into your trunk when your roof is down, try pushing down on the convertible top cover, and it should trigger the switch.

BMW makes at least seven different repair kits that can be used to fix parts of the roof that may have worn out or become broken. Photo 1 shows six of these seven kits and what they aim to repair.

FYI, the parts system for BMW cars (known as “ETK”) is very unclear when it comes to what is included in these kits, so I ordered all of them just to see what came with each kit. All are now available from PelicanParts.com. They are displayed in Photo 1, and a brief description follows:

A: Column C Ceiling Insert Repair Kit (part number 54-31-8-211-902). Contains: Column C inserts and crimp rings. This kit contains both a left and right insert to repair the delicate piece that folds out of the way when the top is lowered. The red arrow in Photo 3 shows this plastic piece that folds into the headliner material. The small tabs on the insert piece often get caught and break off, such that the top must be lowered in steps to avoid having the headliner catch on the frame. Replacement of these pieces requires you rethread some of the rope in the top assembly.

B: Internal Headliner Repair Kit (part number 54-31-8-227-354). Contains: Screws and reinforcement clips. My own car needed this kit to repair a tear in the headliner. In Photo 1, you can see the three long, plastic rails that snap the headliner onto the convertible top. The headliner and rails can break, letting the headliner sag. These metal clips grab onto the existing plastic rails and use screws to reattach the headliner so it won’t sag anymore. One kit should cover the entire headliner. (See BMW technical bulletin 54 04 96 (091).)

C: Column C Ceiling Tension Rope Repair Kit (part number 54-31-8-189-989). Contains: Tension rope, Torx bolt, tension spring, brackets, and lead seal. This kit contains the parts necessary to repair the inner rope on one side of the Column C insert. This rope can be viewed in Photo 3, and I recommend replacing the inserts as well (repair kit A).

D: Column C Cover Tension Rope Repair Kit (part number 54-31-9-068-572). Contains 1,000 millimeters tension rope and five aluminum links. This is replacement rope for tension ropes located in the C column of the convertible roof. Follow the instructions included with the kit to repair the ropes, and be sure to melt each end of the rope to avoid fraying.

E: Repair Kit Column C Cover Insert (part number 54-31-8-209-781). Contains: Column C insert, reinforcement angle, two different sizes of rivets, blind rivet adapter. This kit is used to repair separation of the canvas top from the frame, around the outer edges. It requires the use of a rivet gun, but the repair is pretty straightforward and documented in the included instructions. (See BMW technical bulletin 54 01 95 (891).)

F: Repair Kit for Corner Bow Tension Spring (part number 54-34-8-201-077) Contains: Two tension springs, washers, Torx screws. This kit contains the parts needed to replace the tension springs shown by the light blue arrow in Photo 3. If these springs break or weaken, it can affect the ability of the roof to raise and lower itself properly. If renewing your roof, you should replace these springs.

Folding Top Frame Hinges (not shown – part number 54-31-8-220-564) Contains: Hinge set and bolts. The hinge set is expensive ($250) and is only needed if your convertible top frame hinges have been bent or damaged.

Shown here is a sampling of the repair kits described in the main text.
Figure
Figure 2
This photo shows the convertible motor linkage, which is located under the large, hinged convertible top cover. You can access this area by pressing the top-down switch and letting the cover rise up all the way. The blue arrow points to the cam that drives the bottom part of the convertible top. This is the part that lifts up so the convertible top cover can be raised. If the convertible top cover hits the edge of the top when the roof is being lowered, you can adjust the linkage to push the bottom part of the cover back further (green arrow). While you’re in this area, check to make sure your convertible top motor screws are tight (they were loose on my car when I checked them; yellow arrows).
Figure
Figure 3
The left side of this photo shows the right-side latching mechanism for the convertible top cover. The yellow arrow shows one of the springs that often wear out after many years of use—unfortunately, it’s not a part you can order separately, so head to a good hardware store for a replacement. The green arrow points to one of the infamous microswitches, which should be checked first if you have unexplained problems raising or lowering your top, or opening your trunk. On the right are two areas commonly repaired using the kits in Photo 1. The Column C inserts are shown with the red arrow, and one of the bow tension springs is shown with the blue arrow.
Figure
Figure 4
With the convertible top cover raised, you can also see the bow mechanism located toward the front of the car. The yellow arrow shows one of the finicky microswitches that should be tested first when having unexplained problems. If the roof is not lowering or raising the proper amount, you can adjust this by turning the adjustment turnbuckle shown by the green arrow.
Figure
Figure 5
This is the handle of last resort. Many convertible owners don’t know this, but there is an emergency roof release handle located underneath the rear seat. Usually, you can fish around and pull out the red strap, but if you can’t, simply pull up on the rear seat, and it will pop right out. Pull on the handle to disconnect the roof mechanism and cables from the two motors. You should then be able to manually raise the roof with your hands. Don’t lower the roof if the cables are disconnected—the convertible roof top cover can catch the wind and fly open while you’re driving!
Figure
Figure 6
One of my favorite options for convertible owners is the color-matched hardtop. This top fits on your car with the top down and turns it as close to a coupe as you can get. The top is perfect for people who love convertibles but have to drive a significant number of miles in cold and inclement weather where top-down motoring just isn’t practical. The tops are quite heavy and not that easy to install on the car, so plan on using two people and spending several minutes getting it installed. New tops are about $2,300 from BMW (color-matched to your car), but you can usually find a used one if you look around. If your car didn’t come with one originally, you’ll need the factory installation kit (part number 54-21-8-163-061).

MC Comments: I have a'97 BMW 3 series convertible When putting the top down the top gets caught on the plastic boot on the driver side it works fine when putting top up My wife is now afraid to put the top down even though I can just get out of car and pull the top over the section where it is caught on the boot. I was quoted almost $1k for the repairjust that seem reasonable? approx $360 for the tension belt kit and 6 hours of labor I just can't see putting that kind of money into an 18 yr old cat although it is in good shape just to fix the top. My wife only drives it in the short summers in CLE and probably only puts the top down 6 times a year Any suggestions for a more cost effective repair?

Rollerized Comments: My 1998 323 full auto convertible roof will not go down. When the button is pushed it makes a low clicking noise that is not coming from either of the two motors located in the trunk. The roof does not move only clicks. Was working fine prior to this. Ant ideas? Thx

rhonda Comments: For the life of me I cannot find the release to manually lower the fully automatic top on my 2000 BMW 323ci. I pulled the back seat up but I do not see a release. And how do I find the motor in the trunk. Thank you.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I found this info in the forums:

Manual closing in the event of an
electrical malfunction
1 Emergency operation
2 Allen wrench
3 Recess
Only operate the convertible top
manually when closing it. Never
open it manually since the convertible
top compartment lid cannot be locked,
and would open while you are driving.<
Manual closing is best carried out
by two persons from outside with
the driver's door open and the driver's
seat folded forward. No one is to be in
the rear seat while you are doing this.<

1. Remove the insert between the rear
seats. Take the trim off of the guide
rod and flip it forward
2. Press down hard on the emergency
lock 1 – see previous illustration.
After a brief pause, the mechanism
for the convertible top compartment
lid will be released
If the mechanism for the convertible
top compartment lid does not
unlock, then insert the Allen wrench 2
into the recess 3 and turn clockwise to
release it.<
3. If the luggage compartment lid is
closed, open the convertible top
compartment lid up as far as the stop
will allow
4. Grasp the convertible top by the lateral
guide section – see arrow 1 –
and the front convertible top frame –
see arrow 2. Lift out the top and
swing it forward until you encounter
a perceptible resistance – until it
stops. Position the rear convertible
top frame vertically and close the
convertible top compartment lid.
Fold down the rear convertible top
frame
To avoid damaging the side trim,
always fold the convertible top
forward before folding the rear frame
brace up into its vertical position.<
5. Use a screwdriver to lift out the cover
panel that is in the center of the front
convertible top frame
6. Insert the Allen wrench 2 – refer to
page 48 – into the recess – see arrow
7. Pull down on the front convertible
top frame as far as possible. Complete
the closing process by continuing
to turn the wrench in a clockwise
direction. Turn until the front convertible
top frame has locked onto the
windshield frame. The system automatically
presses the top's rear
frame against the convertible top
compartment lid, pretensioning it to
ensure that it seals tightly.

Bmw=Buy_more_wire Comments: I used to have aperfect working top now after a friend pushed the back manual down . it now hits the back of the convertable door and then the top is not going tight enough up to make the bottom able to clear to fold down inside How do i adjust those two things ? i cant find much help but this site so i trust the answers here
July 21, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The bow for the top may be bent. I would start there. If you need to adjust the top, I would grab a repair manual, it will have the procedure. - Nick at Pelican Parts
LAFEV86 Comments: I have an 03' bmw 330ci. Unlatches from windshield frame, but won't go any further. Use to go up more without opening all the way still but progessively got to its current state. Manually opened it, then tried to close automatically, lid opens but top won't move. Lots of whining going on during this. Fluid was low but topped off during lowered position. Believe I saw some smoke in trunk when I opened to inspect further. Any thoughts?
July 20, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If it is trying, but not moving, this could be a pump issue. If it was low on fluid or leaking, it may not be able to lower the top. I would inspect the pump for corrosion and leaks. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Joe Comments: Addendum:Figured out how to get top down turn allen screw a thousand more times!. Now just need to diagnose clicking. It's coming from tonneau cover motor. It's either mis-aligned, broke, or a sensor not telling it to stop turning. Any advice?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would remove the motor and inspect the drive and gear. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Joe Comments: convertible top switch blinking and I get loud clicking noise from motor when I press it. also I can't lower the top manually. I release the motors and dis-engage at the windshield with an allen wrench but the top won't fold and seems like it will bend if I force it. Is there another release point I'm missing?
July 19, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Once the motor and the latches have been released, it should fold. It may be jammed or bent, which would explain the blinking light and noise from motor. - Nick at Pelican Parts

July 8, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If you pull the emergency release under the rear seat, the cover should open as well as disengage the motor for the top. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Doug Comments: Comments: 2000 Z3 manual top - part 2
Yes this is a new issue - I used to be able to latch the top while sitting in the car. Now I have to get out and push up on the side and down in the front to get the pins in. And I have to push hard! I am hoping there are some diagrams somewhere that show details to check. Its like top "flattened out"..

July 2, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If you need top repair information, you will need a repair manual. Likely fro BMW, as it would be the most complete. If you have to push down on the outside, something may be bent. Inspect the top hinges and pivots for rubbing or binding. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Dan Comments: Just bought a 1998 323i. My problem is the lid opening/closing motor gearing is stripped. The motor works fine but the gear reduction must have missing teeth. Can I buy the gear reduction separately, or do I need the whole motor?
July 2, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I think you can buy the gear. Give our parts specialists a call at 1-888-280-7799 and they can help figure out which part or repair kit you need.
- Nick at Pelican Parts

doug Comments: 2000 Z3 manual top - When I try to latch it, the pins are too far towards the front of the car. I have to "bow" it in the middle push up and push down on the front to get them to go into their slots. Then it latches if I push hard. It seems to be more on the drivers side. Logic tells me that there is something keeping one of the hinges from moving all the way it needs to. Any ideas? Any good guides/videos on what to look for? Thanks in advance!
June 30, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Is this a new issue? I find the manual top needs to be coaxed into the windshield while latching. It should be n inch or sow away, then push so the hook grabs the windshield, then latch. - Nick at Pelican Parts
alexS Comments: I have 2005 E46 body 325cic. I started having issues last year when it looked like the top needed a little push when opening, but closed good. Late last year I tried to open it and it would only go as far as lifting the front and rear section and the tunneau cover. I did not push and left as is. this year it will not even loft the rear section of the top. No clicking noises, closes ok after it is stuck trying to open. Any further troubleshooting steps? Thanks.
June 30, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You may have two issues. I would start with checking the fluid level in the top. If the top needed to be coaxed, it may be low. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Chris Comments: My E30 convertible top won't lower completely into the tray and the back cover comes down and hits the top. My top was stuck one night so I forced it up. Think the frames bent or could a latch be broken?
June 27, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If you forced the top, then the problem appeared, it may be bent or damaged from being forced. Does the top close even, does it look like the top is going up evenly? - Nick at Pelican Parts
Ngalloway Comments: hello I have a 1997 bmw 328i. I had my top down and I got home pressed the up button to close it and it got almost closed and then to my rear right I hear and horrible banging sound. The hooks did not shut all the way at the top either. Now when I try to put the top down it wont move and I hear that horrible banging noise. How can I fix it so my top works properly?
June 25, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The banging could be the motor drive. I would inspect the motor and drive. - Nick at Pelican Parts
John Comments: I have a '99 E36. The cover motor kept running making a ratcheting sound after I lowered the top. Noise continued even after I released the switch. Replaced the cover motor used replacementand all was OK for 2 months. Recently raised the top and after sequence completed top up, windows closed the cover motor started again, not stopping until I shut off the ignition. Since it started after the top was completely closed, I'm not sure it is the motor. Maybe the CVM telling it to start again? Re-sync doesn't help. Any suggestions on what to check?
June 22, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would inspect the motor drive and see if it is worn or misaligned. If it worked for a short while, there may have been another worn part you missed that caused the new motor to fail. - Nick at Pelican Parts
jay Comments: Hi
I have a 2001 330 and the roof starts the opening sequence, the rear folding section comes up, the roof gets halfway but stops, the motor makes a sound like there is force stopping it, I topped up the hydraulic fluid but still is stops halfway, I can close it back down, any ideas?
thanks

fiddler523 Comments: BMW Z3 convertible - had the top down for the drive home, and when I got home, tried to to put it up, and the buttons are dead, no response, no motor running. Seems like an electrical problem maybe?? Do you have parts for this?
June 13, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Yes we do. I would start by checking your fuses and operation of the switch. Once you determine the issue, give our parts specialists a call at 1-888-280-7799 and they can help figure out which part or repair kit you need.

June 10, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: This could be a latch or microswitch. I would start by checking the vehicle for fault codes. If the system is not working properly, a fault code will be set. This will be your best bet when diagnosing.

Bill Comments: I just purchased a 2004 Z4 at a repo auction. The manual top goes down fine but won't latch in the open position. It is as if a part is missing. I found a plastic piece under the driver seat that fits in the front bow latch area. The release lever moves and at the latch end there is a lever rod shape that appears to move in and out with the latch but it won't catch anything on the front bow. Is there a pic or diagram of what the front bow and latch catch look like so I can see if a part is missing?
June 9, 2014

Hopeful Comments: I have owned my 2003 Z4 electric soft top for over a year now and have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. I have one problem though. A couple of months back for a short period of time I had trouble with the top not going up or coming down. The light would flash. I'm thinking it may have been something I was doing wrong as it hasn't done it again since. Around about that time it started jolting in one spot just before it finishes going down. It appears to be catching the fabric? on the 'stowage compartment catch' when coming down, jolting as it comes down over the catch. Am I able to fix this myself? I'm hoping a simple adjustment maybe?
June 5, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would inspect the motor. It is tough to get to as the top as to be removed. There is a common issue with water intrusion and corrosion on the motor and pump. - Nick at Pelican Parts

elie Comments: I have a Bmw z3 m and the convertible doesn't work properly. An electro mechanic said I should change the botton that signals the top to open to the motor...Both fuses on the engine are working as test. Motor oil is sufficient and not leaking. Electricity is flowing through as well. When I open my roof manually while pressing the open botton, the roof starts opening electronically for a few seconds. The mechanic said its a reserve of electicity that passes through.. Can anyone help me with this..?
thanks
May 12, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don't understand what the mechanic is describing. You may have a misadjusted top or faulty pin switch. I would start by checking for fault codes and pin switch position using a BMW scan tool. - Nick at Pelican Parts
CB1359 Comments: Pelican Parts,
My 2004 Z4 top went down fine. However, it wont go up yet motor is trying to work. The red handle in the trunk does not seem to do anything and the emergency pull cord in the trunk just tugs on and moves the top which is still attached to the plastic center console. How can I get to the latch to relase so i can manually put the top up? Go in through the back seat ?
May 2, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The procedure for emergency operation is in your owners manual. It should be similar to this info:

Emergency closing / emergency opening
In the event of failure of electrical and/or hydraulic functions, the top can be opened and closed using emergency unlocking/locking systems.
Emergency closing:
In the luggage compartment on the left-hand side below the convertible top compartment floor, pull out the plastic ring attached to a Bowden cable as far as it will go.
With a 90-degree turn, lock the plastic handle in this position.
In the hydraulic unit, a short circuit is enabled, making it possible to open and close the folding top by hand.
Pull the handle of the Bowden cable in the rear panel of the luggage compartment.
The interlock in the convertible top compartment is released.
Move the top forwards by hand until it reaches the cowl panel.
Take the Allen key from the on-board toolkit.
Remove the plastic panel from the front roof brace.
Insert the Allen key in the uncovered internal hexagon.
Lock and unlock the cowl panel lock by turning the Allen key.
Take out and replace the Allen key.
Emergency opening:
Perform steps 1 and 2 as well as 5 to 7 from 'Emergency closing'.
Unlock and open the cowl panel lock by turning the Allen key.
Take out and replace the Allen key.
Move the top backwards until it reaches the convertible top compartment - Nick at Pelican Parts

glen Comments: I have a 99 e36 M3 convertible. The top is in closed/locked up position. Believe the top latch motor that locks the top to the windshield is stripped where the allen screw goes through. I can hear motor running, but does not unlatch. Screw just dropped out without unlocking the top from window when I tried to manually open. Want to pull the motor out to inspect and most likely replace, but unsure how to get the plastic cover off that covers that motor and hold the headliner up. I unscrewed the little screw from the handle. Seems like it should just pull out from the roof, but don't want to force to hard and break this or any part of the frame. Will it just pull out at this point with enough force or are their other screws/latches I need to undo before pulling?

Hummelgb Comments: Hi Nick, The problem has been present intermittently ever since I owned the car 3 plus years ago. I'm afraid it is straining the mechanism when it catches and is potentially causing further damage and making the random times it catches more frequent. If I had to guess I think it's a stowage lid adjustment issue as I am ALMOST sure it lowers a fraction after fully opening at times. If so where would the adjustment mechanism be? Thanks
February 11, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would check two things. Hydraulic fluid level is correct. If it is not, the cylinders may drop after raising.

If you need to adjust the opening height of the stowage lid, this is done by adjusting the Bowden cables (length) at the stowage latches. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Hummelgb Comments: Thanks, Nick. The seal is properly attached. For clarification: I use the word "seal" to describe the lower, aft-most section of the soft top that eventually seals on top of the hard clamshell cover when the car top is closed. This curved area below the window hits one of the rubber "stoppers" inside the clamshell top that stick out at the end of the two 4"? poles when the clamshell is raised. It seems to me that the hard cover drops from the fully opened position a small but enough distance after opening to obstruct the soft top rear edge during stowage. It makes a popping sound as it snaps past the rubber and the problem seems to be worse in hot weather. Thanks again!
February 8, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If the top is hitting the stowage lid, one of the two are either misadjusted or damaged. HAs this problem always been present or is it a new issue? - Nick at Pelican Parts
Hummelgb Comments: I have a E46 M3 and the outer edge of the rear car top seal below the rear window SOMETIMES? catches the inner clamshell rubber stopper when stowing in the opening operation. April Comments: I have a 2004 BMW M3 Convertible and the top unlocks and acts like it is going to raise but it stops. The dealer read the codes for COWL SWITCH shorted, but today he calls back and says that it's the Hydro unit -- a 1300 dollar difference. Wouldn't it have originally read Hydro unit the first time?? I'm confused. We had almost 2 grand in work done Aug. 2012, then we used it 5 or 6 times this summer 6 months later now it's not working come November. The previous work is under warranty: This is what they did then...separated the wiring on the COWL, drive cables were twisted, removed the wiring harness from the Cowl motor and hall sensors. They replaced Broken Cowl Locks, Cowl side locks and replaced the Cam Followers. That work is under warranty.

1. Is it possible for the Hydro Unit and COWL Switch Short codes to come up as the same thing or is it possible they messed up the Hydro unit while in the shop. I just don't want to get ripped off, because it seems super fishy. Like a nice big fish for a Pelican to eat :

2. Since they removed the wiring harnesses a year ago, could improper work cause the Hydro unit to short thus allowing me to claim it under their warranty?

3. If in fact we have to replace a Hydro Unit in the 04 BMW M3 is it difficult?
January 6, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The fault code may or may not be associated with the malfunction. The unit could have a bad connection, maybe they fixed that then found a faulty hydraulic unit. I would ask them if they can confirm the hydraulic unit will fix the issue, if so, I would go with their diagnosis. - Nick at Pelican Parts

November 23, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: This means there is a fault in the system. You will need a scan tool capable of scanning the convertible top module or check the position switches. You can try to release the top manually and see if the and reset the power top motor in the trunk. See if you can electrically move the top up. You can always return it manually. - Kerry at Pelican Parts

The rear seal for the top is around 320.00 and don' really want to replace it if it isn't bad. However. I lean more toward the top storage compartment lid. I can't seem to find that part through all the diagrams on Realoem.com and others. The question, do you know where I can find this part? Are the adjustments that can be made to the lid/top to tighten it down?
October 14, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If you are talking about the seal around the back of the top where it contacts the storage lid, try using a long piece of 1/4 in rubber tubing and sliding it inside the seal, this will help stiffen it up and make it seal better.

PLIJR Comments: Well, figure I will try to see if I can get an answer or see if anyone else had/has the problem. I have a 2002 BMW 330ci, excellent condition. However, just recently the convertible topblack has started rubbing against the back window when I drop the top. This is causing some wear on the drop top and sticky black marks on the window. Now I live in Texas and I thought that maybe the heat could cause this alone, but I still need to try and solve it.

Hurtingbimmermama Comments: I own a 2007 335i convertible. I am devastated due to the fact that this car was my baby up until the paint in the corner by the winshield on the driver side started peeling. At first I thought it was from some pebbles that had chipped my windshield but as it turns out, it's caused by according to BMW something that "tweaked" the top. I have never done anything to hurt the top, in fact, I am so particular with my car, my kids think it's absurd. I brought her for a diagnostic to the dealership and I got the very unexpected news that she needs a whole new top $22,000+ which it is prohibitive to me right now and I could buy a car for that much. They tell me they could adjust it but the adjustment itself could run into the thousands of dollars and eventually it would still need to be replaced. Please, any advice would be appreciated. I was in denial and now I guess I'm accepting I have a convertible I cannot use as a convertible. More like a sedan. Thank you

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I have seen the tops get damaged buy opening the roof with stuff in the trunk, it bends the frame of the roof and the whole thing needs to be repaired or replaced, there is not much room for adjustment on the roof panels and to adjust the top frame it has to be removed. Hoping you may be able to advise on my 1997 328 convertible?
When opening the roof, the rear screen lifts but insufficiently to allow the clear the cover when to rising, a helping hand and from then on all works well, when closing the roof the whole thing works really well, perhaps a little slow but hey it's 16 years old.
It would be great as it is a fully automatic roof that almost does what it should.
Many thanks for any advice.

The roof now appears to be in a somewhat locked situation with the rear shelf up in a vertical position. Can you help me rectify this situation.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You can manually close the top, then see if it begins to work again.

Remove ski bag or center arm rest from vehicle. Then press the button on the motor assembly to release the gears from motor. There is a hand crank, use it to turn the linkage assembly. Once hydraulic pressure bleeds out, you can manually move top to closed position. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Mick JK Comments: Hi, I have a 2012 120 Convert. I am able to use the key fob to remotely open the windows and lower the roof but why oh why do BMW not allow me to close the roof? Is there any way around this? Also, it would then be logical for the system to use the rain sensor on the wipers to automatically close the roof if rain was detected... No?
Can anyone shed some light on this? thanks
May 1, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: With the vehicle being new and under warranty I feel like these questions can be addressed by your local BMW dealer. I wouldn't be able to tell you why they didn't add that function to the CAS. The rain sensor isn't used likely because the vehicle would be in motion when the rain was detected. You would have to pull over anyway to clsoe top. That negates the need for an automatic function. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Bruce Comments: I have a 1997 328IC convertible. The convertible top will not operate go up or down when I press the switch top open/close the top on the shifter console. There is also no light on the switch when pressed in either direction. I tried to manually dis-engage the top from the windscreen using an allen wrench in the slot abot the rearview mirror but when I turn it it does not open any. Which direction should it be turned to release the top? I turned it about 10 or 15 times and nothing happens. How many turns does it take to release it? The fuses appear to be good checked with a meter.

diane Comments: the convertable top would not go up or down this morning, so i took it apart to look at the motor and parts that may have not been working. the long wire coil that twists on both sides to raise and lower the top broke. the wires just got old and broke. i was able to twist the piece by hand and get the top down enough to latch, but what do i need to buy to fix this?
everything works fine, except the two coils on either side that connect to the motor located in the middle of the car right above my head on the other side of the plastic panel where the convertible top connects.

JD Comments: Hello, I own a 88' BMW E30 I'm having a problem with the manual convertible top, the flap release cable is not disengaging, not allowing the top flap molding to be release, is there a way i can pop it open?
November 4, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I suggest you check the connection between the flap release lever and the cable. If you can grab the end of the cable and pull on it and nothing happens, then the cable is broken or fallen off at the release end. Fashion some sort of home made hook (such as a wire coat hanger) to reach up into the release lock and pull it open. - Nick at Pelican Parts

September 30, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You need to find the missing parts and replace them. Perhaps a scrap yard (junyard) could help you, or you may have to buy the parts new. An alternative (pure experimental, I'm afraid) is to look for manual convertible top parts that you could substitute for the missing power top parts. This is not something I have never done, so you need to be really good at experimenting and improvising. - Nick at Pelican Parts

JT Comments: 1992 E30 325i convertible, I release I turned the allen wrench release in the trunk, the owner's manual says "to uncouple the mechanism of the soft compartment cover insert the allen key 4mm from trunk and turn to the right, how do I recover from this. I believe everything is working and just need to recover from this one incident of stupidy. owner's manual says re-engagement must be carried out by BMW dealer. thanks

September 23, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You did not say whether the convertible top is manual or electrical. My general response in this case is that you need to manually force the top in the opposite direction to reengage it with the gear that is operated by the 4 mm Allen. Once the reengagement occurs you have to work the mechanism to coordinate opening / closing. In the case of the electrically operated top, you need to set the motor end points according to the repair manual instructions. Convertible top repairs are finicky and complicated because you need to make sure the top locks securely and does not leak--that is why BMW recommends you get the work done by qualified personnel such as a dealer tech. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You explain your problem in a confused manner: "When the top is fully opened and I start the car, the top partially opens". Is the top fully open? Fully closed? Opens partially? Not clear. I suggest that the central locking system may be responsible. As the top begins to close the backwindshield opens vertically, then the back cover opens and gets caught at this point. I have to manually assist to allow clearance for a complete operation. al Comments: I recently puchased a 323iconv 1998with a manuel top. after unhooking from roof i cannot lower top.How is this done. thanx
August 8, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The manual top should fold back relatively easily once it is unhooked. If it does not, the likely cause is that one or more of the rods are bent or misaligned. You need to peel back the headliner carefully and inspect the rods and how they are hinged to each other. Straighten or repair as necessary. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Sam Comments: Hey guys -
I have an '88 325ic. The convetible top is operated manually. The locking mechanism on one side is malfunction. AFter checking it, I found it to be loose and out of alignemnt. It looks like the "easy" fix is to just tighten the two bolts that hald the mechanism into place. My question is, how do you access them to tighten? My concern is tooling around town, the failure to lock in place is not much of a problem. When out on open highway, say, ummmm doing the speed limit :, it tends to vibrate. I'm afraifd it might effect drivers dide mechanism and the cover would fly off.
Your expertise greatly appreciated
August 7, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: According to BMW parts, the hooks that hold the convertible front bow in place are riveted in place. You should be able to peel back some of the headliner and see the heads of the rivets. - Nick at Pelican Parts
John L Comments: My trunk latch is not closing the latch will not engage. How can I fix it? I have manually engaged it with a screw driver and then reset it with by unlocking the lock. Any suggestions it seems jsut to be sticking...

T's new 328i baby Comments: I have a 1996 328i convertible and the latch that locks the lid down once the top is down is not locking. The cable that is supposed to pull the latch down is not pulling for tension. The mechanical part for the top does not work. But the previous owner told me I could manually put down the top but did not say that the latch would not work. What should I do?

Bob Comments: Hello. I have a 1995 328 e36, I thought I had recently got to grips with what everything does on the roof. I have reset the motors and everything seemed good. However, when putting the roof up after a reset the cover raises, the canvas comes forward, but then the cover will not fold down! I know both motors are working. I imagine that it is to do with a microswitch but of the 3 I know about the one in the boot, the one in fig 3 and the one in fig 4 none seem to be required for this bit of the process. Is there another microswitch anywhere that may be preventing this? Have you come across this problem before.
July 14, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: There are several switches, the switch that tells the CVM that the top is raised out of the storage compartment is going to be faulty causing the lid to not close.
- Nick at Pelican Parts

JBlack Comments: I just bought a 1999 323i E36 with mechanical convertible top and opened the top while the trunk was up. $%^*!. Isn't there supposed to be a safety to prevent this? Now the lid for the convertible top and the trunk lid are stuck together and neither will budge. The convertible lid won't go back down.
Should I attempt to do this manually? I assume it will NOT because you cannot lock the top into place if you are working it manually.
I am assuming the only way to fix this is to unbolt the trunk lid and take it far enough off for the convertible lid to function. Is this the best way to address the situation and will the mechanical device still function after this experience? Thanks for any advice or help!
July 3, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The trunk lid is only held by 4 bolts, so removing it is simple. You might be able to avoid further damage to the lid, the convertible top cover and their interlock mechanisms by taking off the lid. Go for it. - Nick at Pelican Parts
porschehead Comments: hello-

Just purchased a hardtop for my 96 convertible.
Looks great, but there is a very noticeable rattle on the right rearpassenger side. Over any type of bumps , it rattles badly.
anyway to adjust or correct this?
Thank you
June 18, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: First of all, make sure the rattle is not caused by a worn or loose suspension component (such as a worn out rear shock-absorber top). If that is not a problem, check out the right side hard top lock (#2 in the BMW parts diagram). - Nick at Pelican Parts
ringo Comments: dear wayne i refitted my soft top after unblocking a blockage at first it shut no problem but now it wont open or close and is there someway to open it manualy its a e46 conv 2001
help would be very much appreciated
June 16, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Assuming that your soft top is electrical (you didn't say), check out your owner's manual for instructions on how to manually open and shut it using the 4 mm Allen wrench in the tool kit. Once you know that it really opens and shuts, check out the electrical fuses and relays that control it. It sounds like you lost electrical power to the mechanism. - Nick at Pelican Parts

CateQ Comments: Me again from the UK. I tried to reset the roof and the tonneau cover motor won't click back into place. Clearly something wrong and I believe that the guys who have been resetting the roof for me have been working around it rather than fixing the issue. This would explain why the roof fails too. Sorry - not mechanic - the little black lever with the eye holding the release cable that releases the tonneau motor when you pull the handle under the back seat is the failing part. Has anyone faced this before? Best wishes.

CateQ Comments: I have a new V-reg 323i convertible. For the third time, when attempting to open the roof, the motor operating the roof has "crunched". This brings the whole opening sequence to a halt. The chap I've bought it off always fixes it for free, but this involves a 200 mile round trip. I've manually closed the roof by releasing the cables using the lever under the bench seat, and by using the allan key. I have pushed back the motor located to the left behind the boot trim into place. Where is the second motor - does anybody know? I need to put this back into place then I can re-set I've found instructions on how to do this, so the motors re-synch. I've looked everywhere in the boot for it. THEN, I need to work out what the problem is......... I'm not going to let this beat me.

Dizman Comments: I have an E36 99 M3 vert I got about year ago. It's the fully automatic top, it works fine going up but it needs help going down. The previous owner showed me this, when putting the top down I have to reach back and grab where the rear windows creases and pull it forward as it only goes up slowly on it's own and no where near enough to clear the boot lid when it opens. BUT when I go to put it back down, the window part of the roof opens fine and clears the lid. Also when it's down a good inch or two of the roof sticks out in the center area, where the window is, so the lid doesn't close completely though enough, as you wouldn't notice if I didn't point it out.

The previous owner told me that the shop he took it too, that they said it's the tension belts are worn/shot, and it was REALLY expensive for them to fix it. A year later it's finally annoying me and I wanted to know if that sounds true or if maybe it's something cheaper that needs replacing OR if it just needs some adjustments.

Also the clip on the plastic headliner part in the front, on the passenger side snapped, making me think it needs some adjustments, as since only one side snapped/broke seems like the top is going down slightly crooked.

Thanks for any help!
May 9, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: These convertible top components on your car are now nearly 15 years old, and they wear out. The tension belt is a particularly pricey component. Replacing it is likely more than 1/2 the cost of a completely new roof. You could work local scrap yards to see if anyone has a relatively fresh used top to sell you. Installing a complete top may save you quite a bit of labor cost. - Nick at Pelican Parts
bprice2 Comments: I just purchased an 05 Z4 with a manual top I purchased this out of state and on the test drive the top was down and locked in place but when I drove it on the next nice day and put the top down it will not lock down in place went to the dealership and they told me it was missing a piece and it would be 850.00 to repair it. The top functions fine but it will blow up about 2" when driven. Wondering if those top covers would hold it down?
May 6, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: From your description (and what the dealership told you) I cannot tell what piece is missing. What part was missing--did they tell you? Convertible top repairs are specialized because these tops are complicated, but dealerships are not the only ones with convertible top specialists. Keep checking local BMW repair shops and consulting with techs until you find one who seems to know what they are talking about. While spending $850 on a convertible top repair may be the correct way to go, still you need to make sure at least one other person agrees with the diagnosis. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: There are a number of moving parts other than the motor and after nearly 15 years a number of them may be worn causing friction and drag on operation. If you wish you could pull back the headlner and carefully spray silicone lubricant into the moving joints. If this frees up top operation, consider the fix temporary. You most likely will need to replace the top mechanism, perhaps in sections. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: It's tough to say, but I had a similar problem with my car. The issue turned out to be that the trunk switch was faulty or dirty. The car thought that the trunk was open, so it wouldn't lower the roof (of course it doesn't tell you that either). Check the trunk switch and that might be an easy fix for your problem.   Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don't like convertible issues - they can be very difficult to diagnose. In this case, either the adjustment of the top is off, or one of the microswitches in the mechanism probably needs ajustment. I have a 1997 e36 that I had purchased a new top for from directtops had no issue with them. I then took the car to a local shop that did convertable tops not wanting to go to the dealer and as they say give my right leg. when I got it back it looked great but the top wont go down. now I have to take it to the dealer to see what they broke. In addition, they lost a lot of the screws an replaced them with wood screws, they lost the clips which hold the front pannel that covers the head liner above the windshild, so they used very visible wood screws and super glue to hold it on. now I'm going to the dealer an taking them to small claims court in Orange County. Just advice to all go to the dealer, it will save you time an money in the long run rather than taking a risk. I paid $1,400 for that job now I need to pay alot more.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I dislike convertible problems a lot. It's impossible to diagnose them over the Internet. Sounds like the motor is weak or stuck. On my car, the motor mounts came loose and that caused problems - I would check that first, but it's probably not the issue. You'll just have to stick your nose in there and see if you can see any linkage parts broken or loose. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I found this on the site, eabjr.com regarding re-syncing the convertible top roof for the E36:
Resetting the Convertible Top
This is the procedure to reset the E36 convertible top in case you have used the emergency release handle that's located under the rear seat. This works on my '97 328iC, which has the fully-automatic top. It may also work on other E36 models and years (caveat emptor). The owner's manual says to take the car to a dealer for service, but why do that when the procedure is so easy?

The owner's manual describes the method for closing the top manually, presumably in case you have a dead battery with the top down and it starts to rain. The top mechanism is driven by two electric motors that are located in the trunk -- one for the lid of the storage bin and one for the top itself. Closing the top manually requires (1) releasing the two motors from their transmission drives (using the afore-mentioned lever, which through a cable release mechanism causes the motors to pop away from their drives), pulling the top out of its storage bin, and then using an Allen wrench (from the tool kit in the trunk) to fully close and lock the top to the windshield. The allen wrench gets inserted into a socket that's hidden behind a plastic cover at the leading edge of the top, and then you turn it many many times to simulate the action of the electric motor. Note - there are interlocks between the storage bin lid and the trunk that prevent you from opening both at the same time.

Once the two motors have been disengaged, the top can only be operated manually -- the LED in the control switch blinks, and the owners manual says you have to take the car to the dealer to reset the correct operation of the top. The reason is that the two electric motors have to be re-engaged with their drive mechanisms and also re-synchronized with each other (you wouldn't want the top to crash into the lid of the storage bin).

Never fear, there is a fairly easy way to reset all of this yourself. The following is courtesy of Brett Anderson, who came to my rescue on this topic. I was having a new subwoofer and amplifier installed in the car, and the installer had the rear seat out when he decided to pull on the release handle to see what would happen (it has a red tag on it that just seems to scream "pull me" -- who could resist?).

1. First, manually open the top as described above (the motors must first be disengaged - so if the red hadle hasn't been pulled, now is the time to do so). Place the top back into its storage bin, and then close the lid of the bin as far as it will go.
2. Open the trunk so you can get access to the motors. You may need to push down on the storage bin lid so that it closes far enough to allow you to open the trunk - there's a safety interlock that prevents the trunk from being opened if the lid is open at the same time.
3. Working inside the trunk, remove the carpet liner from the left side (driver's side) of the trunk. There are two plastic clips that hold the liner in place -- you can pry them out with a screwdriver.
4. Behind the liner are the two motors that work the top mechanism -- one drives the top and the other is for the lid. Each motor is mounted on a spring-loaded pivot mechanism. The gears on the motors normally engage the gears for their respective transmission mechanisms, but when the release lever is pulled the motors pop away and disengage. So you have to push the motors back into their original positions so that the gears re-engage. When you do this the spring-loaded catch mechanism will firmly latch in place. Be sure that the motors arefirmly seated into the drive, and not just partially engaged.
5. Once both motors are re-engaged, get into the car, and with the ignition key in the off position press and hold the top control switch in the up (for closing) position. Continuing to hold this switch, turn the key to the "accessory" position (without starting the car) and hold it there. After about twelve seconds the lid will be sucked down into the locked position, and then after a few more seconds the top will start its normal closing procedure.
6. The motors are now re-synched, and should be all set. Work the system a few times to ensure that both motors are properly engaged and all is well.
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The cowl switch should be located right below the cowl (or clamshell) in the rear convertible compartment. Obviously, it's not releasing and the roof computer thinks that the clamshell is down and thus won't open the roof. You probably need to remove this switch and replace it, or at the very least, clean the contacts on the switch. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Greg Comments: I have a 1998 E36 convertible. Last time I put the top up the closing sequence was almost complete when this god-awful noise came out of the rear LH corner under the clamshell.
The noise sounded like a dog-clutch jumping or a gear jumping in and out of mesh.
I let the switch go but the noise continued and lite kept flashing.
The only way to stop the noise was to turn off the ignition.
Turned on ignition again and there was no noise but lite started flashing again.
Also noticed that the windows didn't raise again either during the top closing operation. But can raise and lower them ok using the window switches.
Now the lite flashes as soon as the ignition is turned on and if I operate the switch the noise starts again, requiring the ignition to be switched off then on again to stop it.
I'm hoping that it's something as simple as a limit switch not tripping ....
I have noticed that the front windows on some occasions seem to have a mind of their own and start lowering again during the raising operation. Could the two problems be connected or related???
Any ideas please on what the cause is and how to fix this
March 2, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Again, I'm not a huge fan of convertible problems. The noise you heard is bad news, and probably means that something jammed or something became broken. You might try releasing the mechanism using the emergency release under the rear seat and then realigning the mechanism using the technique I posted recently in our forums: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/101-projects-discussion-forum-bmw-3-series-e30-e36-1982-2000/596553-e36-convertible-top-reset-after-manual-pull.html - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Hippy Chick Comments: I have a 1995 318i convertible - manual top. Current top needs some TLC or replacement - funds tight.   Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hmm, I'm not 100% sure. I believe that all of the E36 tops are very similar, however, I've never heard of or seen a manual top - all the ones that I have seen are power tops. I would think that you would be able to easily swap parts if you could find one, but I'm not sure if you could swap power top parts with manual top parts (again, I've never heard of a manual top). - Wayne at Pelican Parts

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP URGENTLY PLEASE.
February 15, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Right - there is a semi-complicated factory procedure to reconnect the roof to the mechanism after you pull that emergency lever under the seat. In addition, the roof needs to be adjusted and synchronized with itself. I haven't done it myself, but I have heard it's not a five minute job. I would take the car to someone who has done this before and let them snap it back together. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Rachid Comments: Hi, I have a BMW 1998 323i convertible the top wont open can you please tell me what steps to do to check why it doesn't open thanks for your time and help.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: There are a few things that can go wrong with the convertible roof. Firstly, you must make sure that your switches are all operating properly. The one switch that was an issue with my car was the trunk switch. If the car thinks the trunk is open, then it won't lower the roof. This switch can fail from years of use, and it is also susceptible to problems with the trunk wiring (see Figure 2 in this article: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems.htmI would start looking there first. Also, if your windows are stuck or non-operational,then the roof will not open either. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Mr m Comments: My 2004 325ci roof is not going down, when I press the down button it makes the normal sound as of going down but the softop won't react quick, it's really really slow? I just brought the car and when I first bought it was running fine? Can it be power problem? Pleassse help

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Solving roof problems can be a real difficult job. It's nearly impossible to diagnose things like this over the Internet too. I would recommend taking the car to a really good independent mechanic who has direct experience with working on these roofs. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Ozzie81 Comments: On my 1998 328i everything opens and closes perfectly except when the roof folds into the storage hatch, the top cover closes and then doesnt pull the last few millimetres to seal up flush. Have attached photo, any suggestions or help greatly appreciated.
January 28, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The clamshell that covers the back opens and closes with a pretty simple linkage that can be adjusted. I don't have any handy photos, but if you open the roof 1/2 way you can see the linkage in there, and you can also see the adjustment screws. I would try looking in there. Also, if at one time something clogged or got stuck in the roof, then there is the possibility that the linkage may have been bent. You may still be able to readjust it if the linkage is slightly tweaked though. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Sue Comments: My top on my 1999 BMW 323i lowers OK but just before completely lowering it jams. It means getting out of the car to give it a hard push. It then folds away. It does not always happen but quite a lot of the time. Any ideas on how to cure this, please?
January 26, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: There are some adjustments that you can do to the clamshell mechanism - you can loosen the bolts and move the final resting position of the clamshell, perhaps that may help. I'm not a huge fan of troubleshooting convertible issues - they tend to be very finicky and difficult to get "just right". - Wayne at Pelican Parts

mp66226 Comments: Wayne, you mention on October 24th and 26th entries, repairing your micro-switch in the trunk latch at least that is how I'm interpreting your comments. I can't figure out 1 how to get at it, 2 how to test it, 3 how to replace if needed? Can you provide some guidance?
December 7, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It's been a few years since I've taken a look at this. I think the switch is part of the rear trunk locking/latching mechanism. You should see two wires coming out of the latch that are connected to a small switch there. Check the continuity across these two wires as you close the latch (use a screwdriver to fool the latch into thinking it's closed). I no longer have any E36 cars (only 5-Series right now), so I can't run out into the driveway to check this. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
MSWMBA Comments: I have a 98 bmw z3 that I bought earlier this year. The automatic top has never worked and so I've been putting the top up and down manually. Now when I try to put the top down it gets stuck/stops halfway to the down position. Any ideas how to fix this?
November 13, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I believe the Z3 has a hydraulic lifting system. The first place I would look would be the fluid reservoir to make sure that there's fluid in there. Most people don't even know it exists - it's located in the rear of the car near the top mechanism. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
mike Comments: I bout a 97 328ci and the top has not worked since i bought it. When i press the switch to open the top, all the windows slowly go down and that's it. I was told by the person that sold me the car that it just needed a switch. Seems like the switch is working. It blinks. I already did the re sync. Thanks.
October 26, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: There are three or four switches in the actual mechanism, one being the trunk switch. I would start there - it was broken on my car and caused the roof to not open sometimes. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Lyn Comments: 1999 323 Convertible top won't go down, now the trunk won't open.
October 24, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The trunk and roof are tied in together. The trunk won't open if the roof is in "transition", and the roof won't go down if the trunk is open. There are probably some sensor switches that have failed, I would check the ones in the trunk first. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Fred Comments: Is it relatively easy to replae the manual operated soft top on my 1988 E30 325i convertible? The existing vinyl top has shrunk so much that the weather strips on the driver's side window and the passenger side window are exposed. Wind noise is quite noticeable as the turbulent gets thought the gaps. Is there any repair kits to fit this problem?
October 24, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I'm not aware of any fixit kits for this type of problem. Unfortunately, it sounds like the solution is a new soft top (expensive of course). - Wayne at Pelican Parts
PHIL Comments: HI I HAVE AN 2000 BMW Z3, THE PROBLEM THAT I HAVE JUST FOUND IS THAT THE DRIVERS SEAT IS VERY WET AFTER A HARD DOWN POUR OF RAIN,IS THERE A TREATMENT TO RESEAL THE ROOF OR COULD IT BE SOMETHING ELSE, THANKS PHIL

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would suggest that you sit inside the car while you have a friend hose it down with water from a garden hose. That way you can test to see exactly where the water may be coming from. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
D1 Comments: Hi Wayne, this is a useful site. My top works almost perfectly with the exception of the final part when the lid does note close. The soft roof when opening is already in compartment but lid refuse to close. I tried on occasion to press the soft roof more into compartment n sometimes lid will close if i press again. Any cure to this?
September 19, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: There are some adjustments that you can make, but you need to figure out first if the problem is that the soft top is not folding properly, or if the lid is simply out of adjustment. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
sue Comments: I have a 1998 3 series. I have had my motor to my toprully replaced, new straps and completely new installed top. When BMW replaced the motor the top partially open and I had to help it along to complete the process. They explained I would have to have my top replaced because the straps were not strong enough to make the complete transaction. As I stated,I had both straps and top replaced "new" and it still does not work properly. My trunk latch has recently been replaced also. I mention this because of other comments on you site. The top lowers to the point where the back meets the boot cover and stops. I have taken it back 3 times and they say it is fixed. As soon as I get it home it is not working. Please help.
September 15, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hi there. I wish I could help, but these top problems are very difficult to diagnose even when the car is right in front of me. Sounds like too much friction in the mechanism, you'll have to track down the sticking points and then see what the problem is. Also, check to make sure the motor is firmly mounted to the chassis - mine was loose which caused issues. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Sam Comments: The frame or skelton of my convertible top is bent. 1998 328i I don't know how, I just got the car. I have located a used top and want to install it myself. Is there a manual I can get that will show me the steps.
September 12, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I'm not aware of a manual for the installation of a top for your car. Maybe a convertible top dealer that has installation instructions? - Wayne at Pelican Parts
TEFLON434 Comments: Are there any instructions for removing the cloth part of the top only... I have a parts car that has a better top than my daily driver and I'm interested in doing a swap.
August 31, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don't have any instructions on this, but you might want to just swap the whole mechanism - I think that would actually be easier than trying to swap the actual top from one frame to another. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
DApplegate Comments: 98 328I the top starts the process by disengaging from the car and begins to fold back. The problen seems tobe that the boot does not open to complete the cycle. The problem comes and goes so I do not believe it is the motor. But were to start?
August 31, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like there is something slipping in the linkage to raise the rear boot. I would take a closer look while it's going up or down, and feel the strength of the boot to see if it's wobbly or loose as it's being raised. Then hunt around for a loose/worn/broken piece of the linkage. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Tenn Ed Comments: All of a sudden, My M3 convertible top will not retract. It is a fully auto version, and starts the retract procedure, but stops when the back windows pulls up to allow the boot to clear when it opens, but the boot never opens and everything just quits. All I can do is close. I did not actually see it first happen - my wife was operating it, with the driver door open - drivers glass position unknown - no idea how many times she cycled it or maybe her finger came off the switch? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
August 30, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Convertible top problems are very difficult to diagnose, even if you have the car right in front of you. On my car, the motor had come loose from its mounting points, which caused a similar problem to this. I would start by looking at the motor and it's mount. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Les Comments: I have a 1996 328ic. When lowing the top, it will hit the edge of the convbertable cover because the cover does not fully open all the way back. I can overcome that by pushing the convertable cover slightly backward. I know it is very difficult to access the mechanism in the trunk that controls the cover. Any idea?
Thank you so much

Lester
August 29, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You should be able to adjust the mechanism for the cover so that it doesn't sag. This is pretty common on these old cars - see all the questions in this section. Over the years, the roofs get out of adjustment and need some realignment. I guess I really need to do an article on how to accomplish this (one day). - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Mike B. Comments: I have a 1993 325i convertiblee30 with a manual top that needs to be replaced.I've heard differing views concerning replacing the tension straps& side tension cables. Some say absolutly others say no.Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks,Mike
August 23, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I've done the tension straps. If you have the patience, it will save you a few bucks doing it this way. Keep in mind, it is also not the easiest job, but if you are a technical person, go for it. - Nick at Pelican Parts
sye Comments: hi all i have a 96 semi auto roof which just stopped working there are no noises when i press the button the fuses are all ok when i diengage the motor still nothing .Howdo you release the roof storage area lid manually .
August 18, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Definitely check the microswitches, particularly the one for the trunk. The roof will not open at all if the trunk switch is not working properly. If I recall correctly too, it's a different switch than the one that indicates that the trunk is open. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
glekarkyn Comments: I have a 98 Z3 and to power top is not working, but I can here the motor turning when I push the power button. Any suggestions?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I'm not well versed with these tops, but I believe they are hydraulic - first thing I would do is to check the fluid level. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Ken Comments: Wayne,
1998 323i BMW convertible, how many microswitches?
August 6, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sorry, I'm not 100% sure. I think there are at least four in the mechanism. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
kora0008 Comments: I have a 2002 BMW 325Ci. The top doesn't go up unless you help it by pushing it up with your hand slightly. The motor works fine, but it seems like there isn't enough power for the top to go up on its own without giving it a little push up. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be?

Also, when I scan the car for codes, I get code #64 for the convertible topMain pillar does not force clamping bracket into convertible top compartment. Any ideas????
August 5, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Tops are difficult to troubleshoot. It could be that your mechanism is getting old, and has some "stickiness" to it that is slowing down the motor. Or, it could be that the motor is wearing out. The first step I would take is to take a look at the entire mechanism and clean / grease every moving joint that I can reach. Also check where the roof motor mounts to the car - this was loose on my car, and caused some problems like this. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Kenny G. Comments: i bougth 1998 323i convertible, the top worked one time and has not worked since. When I bought it the guy said he had replaced top motor. I've found 3 motors, which motor opens& closes the top?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hmm, I haven't heard of this problem before. The only thing I can think of is that someone put too small of a fuse in that spot in your fuse panel? - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Howzer Comments: Wayne here is a pic's of my problem
August 3, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I've seen this before, but I don't still have my convertible, so I don't have one to refresh my memory. In this case, the mechanism is triggering the microswitches to stop the motors too early. There should also be some adjustments in the roof mechanism to assist as well. These roofs are very tricky, and I would try to find someone who knows how to adjust them (dealer). It's not really a good DIY project, as it's easy to mess these up and make them worse. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Howzer Comments: Hi, I have 1995 325i Everything on the top seems to work in the right order but it is a very slow- not enough power bit seems it will go 95% up but fails to go tight on the trunk lid. Leaving about a 2 inch gab. Has this shrunk and so can it be stretched back. Thanks for any info
August 2, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like the mechaism is putting a big load on the motor, or the motor is getting old and wearing out. I would see if you can disconnect the roof from the motor with the emergency pull and then realign / reattach the cables. Check to see if the roof mechanism is sticky or difficult to move by hand. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Wes Comments: I am pretty sure that I need to replace a worn out microsensor for my 98 e36 convt. top. It will try to close and get to the point where the lid needs to close in order to complete the process and just stick there. I used to be able to pull on the top a bit in order for it to complete the cycle but now that no longer works. Do you know where the sensor is that triggers the top's compartment lid to close and do you guys sell it? thanks
July 29, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I think it's located on the mechanism for the lid itself, and you can adjust it by bending the contacts (if that is the switch that is having problems). We sell that too, have sales help you out at 1-888-280-7799 after you find where it's located. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
jon Comments: Hello, just purchsed a 1998 Z3 in mint condition exept for 1 thing. When opening the convertible top it gets about 2 inches from the windshield and stops too far away to latch. Any suggestions? jon
July 29, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The Z3 has a hydraulic system that I'm not very familiar with, but I would suspect that some microswitch somewhere is triggering early, causing the roof to stop. I would take a closer look at the mechanism and see if you can find where this is happening. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Lynn Comments: Can you tell me if there is a trick to manually lowering the top on a 1998 328i convertible? The top is not working, but I tried to disengage the lift motors to replace the rear window. I have the old rear window out and need to releive tension so I can zip in the new window.
The rear section seems to be locked in position and I can find no way to unlock it to make it fold up. I have used the key to release the top from the windshield and disengaged the top lift motors by pulling the release lever under the back seat.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
July 26, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If you're talking about the rear clamshell, I believe that it can be manually disconnected from the mechanism. You can also manually turn the motors in the rear trunk to manually dial it down if need be. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Hunter Comments: I have a 328i Convertible that when I put the top down the the bottom rear of the roof the metal bar that goes flush against the car below the rear window hits the convertible compartment lid! So as the lid opens and the cover proceeds in, it smacks the lid right in the middle. I've checked the shock that attaches to the lid arm - it's very much so pressurized and working. When the lid is vertical it has a little bit of play in it. I dont know if you can adjust the motor the one in the port aft side of the trunk to lift the convertible compartment lid more vertical - that would solve the issue! How can I eliminate that play and make the lid lift a little so the top doesn't come crashing on it as it tries to tuck itself away
July 25, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hmm, I unfortunately have sold my convertible, so I don't have one here to look at. But, if I remember correctly, the lid position and orientation is adjustable with some screws in the back. I think they may have come loose. Also check the motor to make sure it's tightened down to the chassis - it came loose on my car and messed things up a bit. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Also check the trunk wiring - see the article on electrical troubleshooting here for a photo of bad trunk wiring: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems.htm - Wayne at Pelican Parts
BobSC Comments: I have a 2001 E46 330Cic. I am experiencing some wind noise at the top of the rear windows on both sides of the car. It appears to me that if the window went up another 1/2 inch or the top came down a 1/2 inch it would eliminate the problem. Is there any adjustment on the top that I could do that would lower it slightly to match up better with the window?
July 14, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Not that I know of, but the height of the windows are adjustable. See the window project in our main tech articles page for more information. If it's happening on both sides of the car, that seems to indicate to me that there may be another problem with the roof though. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
John D. Comments: The 2002 325 soft top operates great blessings considering all the preseeding commentsexcept at the final close. The latches enter the top of the windshield but will not engage. You can hear the motor working but nothing happens. Fuse #6 5amp replaced but not successful.

Chris Comments: How do I reset the convertible roof of my bmw z3. When I turned the engine of one day I didn't realise that my friend was putting the roof back up with the controls. When I turned the engine back on none of the controls would work. The roof was half way up at the time when I turned of the ignition. So in the end I had to pull the roof back in to place. Since then I've tryed and tryed again to get the roof to work and there doesn't seam to be any noise or anything happening.

I have a busted rear shock, I pretty sure the shock tower is serviced through the opening where the convertible top is stored? Any quick fixes to try on the hood, it was working fineuntil the last time I closed it and the light did not go out, its stuck in the up position thank god. How would you lower the convertible top manually if I cannot get the top to work. Id appreciate any help thanks Gil

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You can pull the emergency pull handle under the rear seat, but that is typically used to get the top up when it's down, not down when it's up.

Sounds like it might be a microswitch or two - there are several that give inputs to the controller. Also, make sure the rear trunk switch is operational, as the roof will not open with the rear trunk open. Hope this helps... - Wayne at Pelican Parts

beemerdude Comments: Ii advised you of a problem with a clicking sound heard in the trunk area upon depressing the top down button on my 1996 328i, e 36. The problem in this case was the boot lid motor, since it was replaced, all is fine.
My comvertible top guru told me the motor failed because the tension straps were worn and the rear bow used to hit the boot lid conv. top cover over time, this damages the gearing in the non serviceable motor.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: There are a few more switches that may be broken. The least obvious one is the trunk switch, if it says the trunk is open, the roof will not go down at all. Also check out my article on the potential wiring faults - see Figure 2 for an example: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems.htm - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Inky Comments: I have a 1989 320i e30 convertible. Do you know if any of the other hard top roofs fit on it as well as the e30 roof? I have heard rumours about the e46. Thanks
June 16, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sorry, I have not heard about any other hard tops fitting the E30. You might want to find a used car lot with an E46 with this top on it and buy them a case of beer to see if they will let you check? - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Grahamhill56 Comments: 1997 Z3 Roof problem in hot weather! This is a strange one! The roof works fine under most circumstances but when the weather gets hot the roof won't go up! When I press the the button I can see that the roof is trying to raise, but it just does not have the energy, so I just have to pull it up by hand
June 6, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I'm not super familiar with these roof mechanisms, but I believe they are hydraulically controlled, which would make sense as hydraulic systems are affected by heat sometimes. There is a reservoir in the trunk of the car for the roof - I would start by checking the fluid in there. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Napaster Comments: New one for the experts. With the top down, my son's girlfriend slid across the back edge to get into back seat yeah, without opening the door, popping the right rod assemblty cover out of place. This is the cover that slides down and forward when the roof is raised, providing clearance for the metal arm. I had this problem once years ago and the BMW tech took 15 seconds to reinstall...I can't figure it out!

May 18, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Convertible tops are notoriously difficult to fix. You really need to find someone who has fixed these before. Something as simple as a broken trunk switch sensor can stop the entire roof from working, and there is no computer (that I'm aware of) that will give you the reasons why the roof is not going down. It's one of my least favorite things to work on. I wish I had better info for you. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
BeemerDude Comments: I have a 1996 328i conv., recently the boot lid would not raise for me to close the top. I had to pull the emergency release to do so. The next day, I put the top back down manually to troubleshoot the problem. I reconnected the drives motors pressed the conv. top button and a loud clicking sound was heard, I was able to access the trunk while this was going on and applied pressure to the boot lid motor and its frame, as I saw it vibrating. The clicking stopped and the boot lid raised, then the top then operated properly. If i do not hold the motor in closer or tightly the problem repeats. What may be the problem? Perhaps a bad motor assembly or the transmission thingy it connects to?
May 12, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: On my car, I had a similar problem. Turns out the bolts that hold the motor assembly had come loose. Two minutes later, all was well. I hope that maybe your fix is as easy? - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Major Comments: Do any older model BMW's have manual tops. I believe I would rather just put it down myself. I had a Saab with the complicated automated top and they are a real pain in the rear.

bobbyb Comments: hi i have a 1998 328i my up down switch is good although it does not light up and the central locking system does not work and can or does that effect the top working? mine does nothing at all tried resetting. my question is wether or not the locking system is tied into the roof fuctions?
May 1, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Good question. I think so. The central locking system can control the up/down motion of the windows, which is also controlled by the roof button, so the two definitely work together. Maybe one relies on the other to activate the windows. Try rolling down the windows all the way and seeing if the roof then will work? - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: These roofs are very complicated, and I wouldn't suggest adjusting anything if you don't know what you're doing. At this point, I would try to find someone with experience working on them who can adjust and/or replace the cables and strings that may be worn out or broken inside. It's just something that would be pretty difficult to fix if you didn't work on them all day long. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would start by looking into the window drop issue. If the door switches are not working, the windows will not drop. Check the door switches to start. Need help with this adjustment.
March 28, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Could the replacement top fame be bent? If you installed it in the same position as the old one, the fit should be fairly close. An inch is quite a bit, not sure an adjustment could bring it down that much. - Nick at Pelican Parts

theworm550 Comments: Here's one for you. Operationally everything works when opening and closing my top. Meaning that yes the top goes up and will go down. The windows will work too. Here's the kicker. When I put the top down the everything but the physical top thinks I'm trying to put the top up. So I unlatch the top release press the "down" button. Windows go down half way, back of top goes up. Cover panel goes up then the top starts to retract. Right about here the cover panel thinks it should go back down. Everything is all mixed up on what it should be doing at this point. I have to manually lift the back of my top, push the cover panel back and somehow press the "down" button using my toe :- It's like I just need to put the top all the way up and tell the car YES the top is up right now. Which will reset it back to normal. Any way of doing this? I was thinking about disconnection the battery and seeing if the computer resets as my first step.
February 23, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Here is the top reset procedure.

Trunk lid closed. Windows open.

Release motors with handle under rear seat, put handle back in place.

Store top in box and close top lid, trunk lid should now be locked, press on right of top lid to unlock and open trunk lid.

Engage motors, may need to wiggle the top or boot lid.

Close trunk, press top switch to open and hold down, turn ignition to 'R' [radio on].

After about 10 seconds boot lid should close shut.

Release top switch. Top should work now. - Nick at Pelican Parts

October 22, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I honestly can't remember if the trunk switch is integrated with the lock mechanism, or if it's located more towards the front of the car. I've worked on too many cars with too many problems to remember exactly. :) I do know that the trunk wiring has a bad design (see the article here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems/101-Projects-82-Electrical-Problems.htm ). I would check out the trunk lock switch located in the actual lock mechanism first, before doing anything else. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Colin Comments: I have a 1995 325i convertible. My roof is closed but will not retract. One of the motors makes a knocking/whirring sound when I press the top-down button, but the roof compartment lid does not open. Does the sound indicate a problem with one of the motors or is this sound normal on such occasions? I have a feeling the problem may be due to a trunk lid issue that arose when I overstuffed the trunk the problem started immediately after, but I'd like to know if I'm on a wild goose chase before I pursue that angle.
October 22, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It's not the motor, it's part of the mechanism. You might have something still stuck in there from when you stuffed the trunk. I wouldn't try to open it any more, but I would take a closer look in the trunk to see if you can see anything in there that might be causing trouble. The lid lift mechanism works very close to the trunk compartment. There may also be something that got stuck and broken. Most likely a linkage problem... - Wayne at Pelican Parts

October 2, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Probably one of the strings / cables in the car are broken or need adjustment. You need to fish around in there to see which one is causing this (compare to the other side), and then see if you can replace or tighten it). September 26, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don't like these either. The problem on my car was that the trunk switch was broken, and causing the computer to think that the trunk was open all the time (ironically, it's not the same switch that powers the light in the trunk, etc.). Bottomline, check all of your microswitches in your roof - they might be telling the roof something that it doesn't expect to see. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Selaasdal Comments: can you somehow adjust the hood, when it has a leak in the right corner where hood and the window frame close together It drips down on my passenger seat when it rains, but the sealing strips looks fine
September 26, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Depending upon what car you have, you should have a drain right over there so that the water will drain down to the street - not your passenger footwell. I would double check in the engine compartment to see if leaves or something else has clogged your drains. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
steveo Comments: Hi
I had a problem with a jam and pulled the handle under thee seat. I have put he motor back in place in the trunk and the main roof mechanism now works fine. The problem is the cover won't move automatialy. I assume this too has been disconnected by pulling the lever. How do i reconnect?
Also the back of the hood does not seal properly when in the raised position, there is a gap of about half an inch. How could this be resolved and what parts do i need.
Many thanks

Followup from the Pelican Staff: This is most likely a problem with one or more of the microswitches present in the system. It also might be related to faulty wiring in the trunk (see the other article on this website). I would check and/or replace each of the switches in the system. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Lee Comments: When installing the "A: Column C Ceiling Insert Repair Kit", what type of fabric adhesive would you use?
August 27, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I like to use 3M SuperWeather Strip (the yellow stuff, not the black stuff). It works so well that if you glue fabric together, and then try to take it apart, it will rip the fabric, rather than separate where the glue is. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Mike Comments: My problem posted on July 29 is very similar to Gary's posted on August 11. I too eventually discovered that pushing the front of the top gently backwards keeps the top opening.

Lately the top has operated perfectly. Not sure if it relates, but the only thing that has changed is the access cover on the passenger side squarish and moves forward-back to provide clearance during top operation popped out when someone leaned on it. I have not had time to work on it so I removed it completely, including the spring and rod that hold it in position. I can't see yet how this might be helping the top problem, but haven't had an issue dropping the top since removing it.

Hope to re-install the cover plate soon and will report if the problem comes back afterwards.
August 21, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The missing cover will not effect the top operation, but make sure you check the black plastic push rod and the cover for cracks, if they are cracked, replace them.

Stephen Comments: Wayne,
I have a 1999 328ic. The convertible top works fine most of the time, but lately I have been having a problem with the switch. I press the switch to lower/raise the roof and nothing happens - the indicator light does not go on - nothing. If turn off the car & wait a bit then try again everything works fine. Could I simply need to replace the switch or could it be something else? Any suggestions on how to approach this would be appreciated. thanx

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I hate working on roofs, there is no diagnosis system that I am aware of to determine faults. There are a bunch of microswitches in the roof that can fail, and when they do, it stops working without warning. The most confusing one of all may be the trunk lock switch - if the trunk switch is open, the roof will not go down. Couple that with the wiring faults in the trunk lid (see the other article on electrical problems), you may have a broken wire harness affecting the roof operation. Tough to know these things without experience. Take a look at the trunk wiring - that's what I would do first. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Gary Comments: Hi Wayne,
My name is Gary. I own a automotive repair shop and I am working on a 2002 BMW 325Ci Convertible top that will not go down with out some assistance. When opening top the front bow unlatches from windshield frame and goes up as the rear bow goes down the front bow starts falling down. At that point the top will stop working unless you push up slightly on the front bow by hand. After assisting the top at that point, the top will continue to operate normaly going down. Complete closing cycle is normal. Do you have any idea what is causing this and what would be necessary to repair this problem.
August 11, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I wish I could help, but it's nearly impossible to diagnose something like this over email. Typically when the roofs don't work too well, there's something obvious that has snapped, or worn or broken. Sometimes it's difficult to find it inside the roof though - I would triple check everything in there and look for a broken strap or piece. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Mike Comments: What would cause my 1997 328i convertible top to only partially retract? This is an intermittent problem, as the top will go down just fine for weeks, and then not for at least a few days.

It begins the process, detaching from the windshield, opening the compartment and beginning the decent into the compartment. But, but as the back of the top touches in the holding area, it seems like the frame is locked so it does not continue folding into place.

At first I thought it was due to my loose straps not pulling the lower section fully forward and allowing clearance of the opening lid. I thought this might provide a mechanical release of the joint, since I can feel it sort of pop into the fully open position when I pull it. But manually helping it fully moving forward to clear the lid does not fix the issue of the final fold into the compartment.

July 19, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Crazy, but it might be the switch for the trunk. That happened to my car. If the roof thinks the trunk is open, then it won't allow you to put the roof down. There is some bad wiring in the trunk that gets crimped (see the electrical problems project), and that may affect the trunk switch too, which then stops the roof from opening! - Wayne at Pelican Parts
George Comments: I am trying to buy a used BMW E36 convertible motor since mine is broken. Any suggestions where to locate one??
July 11, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I usually look on eBay first for those types of things. It's pretty complicated to change out the motor on these, I wouldn't risk buying a used one that might just crap out on you in a few months after you install it. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
DPhillips Comments: When lowering the top, there is a noticeable stain on the driver side boot that looks like an oil spot. What would cause this?
