Rebuilding your engine is a process that should be done right. For the most reliable of rebuilds, replace your pistons and rings with new ones. If you are reusing your old pistons, make sure that you have them checked at a good machine shop to make sure that the ring grooves are not worn. Also, the inside of the cylinders should be honed. Failure to do so may result in a new set of rings not seating properly. |
| Camshafts | | Original camshafts can be reground to work in rebuilt motors, however, they will never perform as well as a new one. This is because there is no way to replace the worn material on the cam lobes. While performing a full rebuild, you should replace both the camshaft and the lifters. If you regrind your old camshaft, make sure that you regrind the lifters as well. |

The timing chains and belts keep the pistons and valves aligned and running in sync. If the chain slips or the belt breaks, then the pistons will most likely hit the valves, and you will have some very expensive engine rework on your hands. Don't chance it - use new parts here. If you don't change the belt and it snaps, the valves can hit the pistons and cause something similar to this.. WARNING, not for the faint of heart.Valve Disaster Article. |
