The problem is somewhat complicated but boils down to an engineering mis-calculation (the sealing surface is too small). The correct fix is to replace the pistons and cylinders and use the new, wider, head gasket. Probably $6-8k worth of work. This, and many other problems were said to be fixed by '92. . Any competent 911 mechanic should be able to spot this during the pre-inspection. Porsche has issued tech bulletins on the subject.
