There have been a number of "new" refrigerants coming into the market with the sharp increase in the price of R12, but most if not all have proved disappointing. So far, nothing cools as well as R12, and some of these new ones are somewhat corrosive (tough on expensive parts). I'd make sure that my current system was in good shape, find and fix any leaks, and get an annual check/charge with R12.
