Problem - '74 911 Hi Larry, I don't understand what the Haynes manual is referring to. I don't know how a "cable could pop from its housing". I think Wayne's suggestion is on the right track. If the cable had completely broken, you would have no clutch disengagement. The pedal cluster is a bit of work to remove, but inexpensive to repair. If the roll pin has sheared, it will be obvious--you will be able to move the clutch pedal without corresponding movement of the clutch arm at the inboard end of the pedal cluster.
