Why A 918
The Name
Well the name made sense to me. For one I have heard it said before. But I do
have justification and my own reasoning. well anyway, second I have never heard
any other Porsche called a 918. Third 914's were 4 cylinders, 916's were 6
cylinders, 924's were 4 cylinders, 944's were 4 cylinders, 928's were 8
cylinders, but those are the only models it works for, so naturally a 914 with 8
cylinders would become a 918. The factory made two 914's with flat eights,
where one was given to Ferry Porsche and the other to his son. These two cars
were 914/8's, The 916 were 914/6's that had an special body option.
Update:
I decided to change my criteria. A 918 should be a 914-8 hard top. This is
similar to the 916. 916's were 914-6 and were hard tops. This is partly because
I would like to build a hard top 914-8 and I feel the 918 is a better name that
is truer to the naming sequence. So I'm going to call my car a 914-8 from now
on. And once I build a hard top version then I will call that a 918.
