The first year I spent a lot of time learning about the car. Going through the pile of receipts from Stoddard to find out what modifications a had already been completed.

Winter/Spring 2001

I started by replacing all the ignition components: Plugs, wires, coil, points, cap, rotor, and I disassembled the distributor for fresh grease and oil. I Changed the oil and adjusted the valves for the first time.

I replaced the fuel filter, drained the tank, rebuilt the Webers, put in fresh gas, and cranked it up for the first time in ten years. It smoked for the first few minutes and it was running pretty rough. I adjusted the timing, and synchronized the carbs, now she was running how I expected. I replaced the rotted P6's and I was ready for spring.

Winter/Spring 2002

It was still popping and spitting after driving hard, or filling with gas. I pulled the gas tank, and it was rusted on the inside from sitting for ten years. I re-sealed the tank, flushed all the fuel lines, replaced all the filters, and rebuilt the carbs for probably the third time, and the popping and spitting was gone. I was getting pretty good at synchronizing the Webers.

I also completed a brake overhaul, new pads, rotors, fresh fluid and a pedal cluster rebuild with bronze bushings.

I removed the bolt in roll cage Stoddard had installed because I didn't need it for the type of driving I was doing. I also removed the 1973 center console and gauges in order to re-install the original hand throttle. I finished out the winter of 2001 by stripping and painting the headers, muffler, rockers, front and rear valances, and Fuchs.

I finished in time to go my first PCA car show/concourse. I entered the Peoples Choice event and took third behind two 911's. Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3

Summer/Fall 2002

I did a little Weber fine tuning, by switching to 30mm Venturi's, 60 idle jets and 120 mains sourced from PMO. I also met up with a great group of Pelican Parts members, and helped out with a G50 clutch replacement and shift fork bushing upgrade, followed by a 2.7 to 3.2 conversion. Doug has also coordinated 3 great fun runs for those of us in the NoVA area.

Winter/Spring 2003

Replaced the original rear shocks with Bilstien HD and 140 pound springs. The rest of the suspension is getting upgraded as soon as I finish collecting the parts.

Spring/Summer 2003

Spring/Summer has been pretty busy. We got a puppy just before Memorial Day, and I haven't had the time to do any work on the 914. I did manage to purchase and install a RennShift shifter, which I'm enjoying so much I decided not to convert to a side shifter transaxle. I also killed the permatune ignition unit, so I converted to a Crane XR300 ignition with optical points replacement. No more adjusting points for me, the install took less than two hours, and has worked great so far.
