The History of #1960

My father purchased #1960 from David Wechsler in the summer of 1983 in Plattsburgh, NY. Here is the add from Panorama, April 1983 (provided by Larry Lee):

70 914-6 Roadster 9140431960. Green, good original cond, reblt eng, carefully maintained, new P6's, factory alloys. $XXXX.

The only other information I have on its history before David is a legal document showing the termination of the loan for the car. It is dated 12-26-1978, and it belonged to Vernon Christopherson who was stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force base.

My father did some work on the car, but he wanted to have it restored. So #1960 spent the next two years at Stoddard in Ohio. The pictures below were taken by a Stoddard employee and mailed to my father before he arrived to pick up the car. I have most of the receipts from the restoration including a set of pictures taken before the final assembly .

My father drove the car until for about a year, and it returned to Stoddard for an engine and transmission rebuild which were not part of the previous restoration. Here is the copy of the build sheet from Stoddard.

While at Stoddard, some small but interesting modifications were made. The wipers were reversed so that they park on the passenger side of the car. The battery was relocated to the passenger side of the front trunk , a bolt in roll cage was installed, along with an appearance group center console. A power antenna was moved to the previous location of the battery, and a permatune ignition system was added to the fire wall . The engine was upgraded to an E spec 2.0L with T cams and a 7100 RPM redline , and Stoddard fabricated solid transaxle mounts.

#1960 was driven in the summers from 1987 until 1991, when we put it away for winter storage. It remained in storage until January of 2001 when I purchased the car from my father, and my wife arranged to have it transported from CT to VA as a Christmas gift.

As a Christmas present my wife arranged to have the car transported from Connecticut to Virginia. This is the day after it arrived, after washing off the ten years of dust from being in the trailer.

Another picture from the same day, a shot of the old US tail lights.
