endings...
Well, the engine is back together, in it's
place and seems to feel adequately attended to at least for now (June 10,
2001). When I started this project, I was bent on an RS replica, but along
the path, I decided to just do what felt good. That turned out to be mostly
RS; the 2.7, the bumpers, the flared rear, the graphics and suspension attitude.
I chose a different tail and the seats aren't correct for that car, so I
installed the "Carrera RS" decal that came with the graphics set
in a more appropriate place...my toolbox lid. Anyway, 72' 911's have one
tell-tale feature that gives their birthday away. This one has that one
special feature. If you know 911's you will know what that is. So, this
one is a slight hybrid. I really do like long nose 911's though.

The slightly down in the nose "RS attitude"...Had to work on
that. The car gained a little altitude in the front due to weight loss from
steel bumper to f-glass unit from GT-Racing. Front fender lips were rolled
to accommodate 7" Fuchs with 205/55/16 Bridgestone RE-71's. The rear
has SC flares, but the lip was trimmed with a hand grinder for clearance
for the 245/45/16's. The rear rims are 8" Fuchs replicas. I couldn't
find the real ones for a reasonable amount...maybe later.

The 8" rims and 245's fill the rear well nicely...you can see the
rolling of the front fender lip starting at about 10 o'clock.

You'd think the Tennessee DOT could have found me a more appropriate
plate. Wonder if a guy in TN with a 356 has 911 plates?

New carpet in the trunk...Doesn't show, but the trunk, trunk lid and
wing underside are painted with Zolotone splatter paint. New lenses all
around and horn grilles.

New wheel, but old button...one of the old Porsche crest buttons. Was
on the old MOMO wheel which was badly deteriorated.

It was a T originally, so I tossed the old seats. These are MOMO Street
Racers which recline and fold forward. The belts are a bit much for the
street, but what the heck, they go with the rest of the decor. Bad shot
of the detailed engine because of the light, but so far so good.

from a 1981 SC. All fender lips are rolled or trimmed for clearance.
- Sabelt 3 point seat belt/harnesses (a little overkill maybe).
- Brake system stock, but completely rebuilt.
- A lot of other small miscellaneous things...most of which must have
been important at the time.
Left to do...
- Headliner (glass will probably have to come back out ). Yep, it
did, but new headliner installed Sept, 01.
- Decide about a stereo. Don't need the music with the music coming from
the engine bay, but something needs to fill that hole in the dash. Made
a bulkhead and installed Pioneer 6x9's in the rear and 6's in the doors...sound's
ok (Aug., 01). Installed a Pioneer CD player/tuner November, 01...sound's
fantastic.
- Shocks and struts sometime soon. Not sure the ones in it are bad...they
are Koni's.
And thanks to...
- Everyone at the Pelican Parts BBS. What a great resource for restoring
Porsche automobiles or just for P-car trivia.
- Warren Hall. Great mentor, generous tutor and an encyclopedia on 911's
for sure. Never met or spoke to Warren other than by e-mail. I'd never
have tackled this without Warren's encouragement. The web is a great tool
for this hobby too.
- My wife. She actually encouraged the acquisition of this car. She also
thinks she's going to drive it, HAH! Truthfully, hah, she can when she
wants. I think one pump on that Sachs clutch or at least one jaunt around
the traffic lights in Brentwood, TN will take care of that urge. Kidding...she
is a partner in this car.
- Bruce Anderson. Great book...Porsche 911 Performance Handbook.
Followed his advice carefully and he actually answered more than one e-mail
for help. This book leaves nothing to the imagination and is a "gotta
have" for restoring or modifying 911's.
