One of the most common annoyances associated with the late-model E36 BMWs is the somewhat troublesome air bag warning lamp. This warning lamp had dogged do-it-yourselfers for years. The lamp is like a little gremlin – there apparently is no specific reason why or how it is activated – any number of seemingly harmless actions can set it off. The airbag lamps on all three of my E36 BMWs have been on at one time or another. Sometimes the light will stay lit, and then go out after about 3 minutes of driving. Sometimes it will blink and then stay lit. Sometimes it will stay on continuously from when you start the car. Either way, each of these occurrences indicates that the airbag computer (also known as the SRS, or Supplemental Restraint System) has had a problem in the past.

The SRS warning lamp is often triggered for relatively minor reasons that do not require any maintenance on the system. Any number of harmless acts can trigger the SRS lamp:

  • Driving the car through a large puddle, or being exposed to lots of rain
  • Swapping steering wheels
  • Removing the gauge cluster to replace light bulbs
  • Aggressive and/or track driving
  • Accidentally disconnecting an SRS component while hooking up electrical accessories, like an alarm or stereo
  • Pulling a fuse for the SRS system while performing electrical troubleshooting.
  • Bad seatbelt sensor in the belt receptacle (common failure)

You can’t clear the lamp by disconnecting the battery – it will stay on. You can take the car to your local BMW dealer, but they will charge you anywhere from $80 to $300 just to diagnose the system and reset the lamp. However, there is a new tool available for the home mechanic that allows you to troubleshoot and diagnose air bag problems. The R5/SRS scan and reset tool from Peake Research (Figure 1) is very similar to the fuel injection code reader featured in our Pelican Technical Article on Reading Fuel Injection Fault Codes. The tool plugs into the same socket and allows you to diagnose the problem with your airbag, and also to reset a that annoying lamp. The instructions are very simple – just plug it in, read the codes, and then reset the lamp.

Most of the time, the airbag error code will be relatively minor, particularly if you know what caused the error. For example, the airbag light went on after I removed the gauges from my E36, and then accidentally turned the ignition on in order to move the steering wheel out of the way so they could be reinstalled.

Many people have told me that the airbags will not deploy when the airbag lamp is illuminated.  This is an area of much controversy, as I have also been told by more than a few people that their airbags did deploy when the light was on.  From this non-specific evidence, I would hazard to guess that the airbag system does indeed continue working when the light is on.  However, the light is obviously there to warn of a potential fault in the system, so you should check it out immediately if it does happen to light up.

In addition, BMW factory documentation seems to indicated that the airbag system will still work if the airbag light is on, and there are only minor faults observed. I will quote from BMW factory documents:

72 01 93 (2137) - "The [airbag] Watchdog subsystem has the ability to disable the Output Stage in the event of certain faults."

72 01 85 (2042) - "If the SRS indicator light [lights up] the system is faulty; there is a risk of the system not operating in the event of an accident.

So it would seem, depending upon the type of fault recorded by the Watchdog system, the airbags may or may not deploy - it depends on how serious the fault it.

There are quite a few BMW Technical Bulletins available on the design and maintenance of the SRS system. Bulletin 72.01.85 details the SRS system, 71.01.93 discusses the later-model Central Activation Module, and 61.02.00 describes the procedures for installing various SRS sensor wire harness repair kits.

Comments and Suggestions:
Rob Comments: Gday Sirs. I had the steering wheel replaced same part no because the slip ring was damaged and the airbag light was on all the time. the slip ring came with the steering wheel and it was in good condition, no damage. After the replacement, the SRS airbag light now does this:

- Upon starting the car, airbag light comes on...and goes off after more than 10 seconds.
- When using the turn indicator stalk to go left or right, the airbag light comes on and turns off after a few seconds. The duration of the light varies.

Please help with any suggestions?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would assume it is related to the new parts. I would start by checking the vehicle for fault codes. If the system is not working properly, a fault code will be set. This will be your best bet when diagnosing. - Nick at Pelican Parts
scott Comments: Will a deployed airbag stop the car from startting?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You may not be able to access the advanced codes. The faults likely just need to be cleared, as long as there isn't a connector issue under the seat. Have someone clear the faults, try a local shop. - Nick at Pelican Parts
fastlikeM3 Comments: Hi Nick - great column good stuff !

I have a 98 e36 M3. I took the seat out just to clean and put it back. The light is on and NO codes - what do you suspect is going on ?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: No codes, weird. What reader are you using? It may not have the capability to read airbag faults. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Kurt Comments: Hi , i own a 1999 BMW 323i E46 and i had a after market stero put in, but i kept the original head deck, the system worked fine for a while. But after 6 months lots of small electrical problems were occuring in the car. Iv had the after market system ripped out so its back to factory wiring, just with better speakers and new wires. My local auto electrician has solved many of them of the problems., but the one left is as follows. Sometimes when the car is turned on the radio experiences poor reception and the air bag light is faint and will flicker with the music. But if you turn the visor light on, the airbag light will brighten and then the system works as normal. The airbag light goes out and the radio is better, but the cruise control sometimes goes dead from this. Until you turn the car on an doff again the cruise control won't work. This only happens about 10% of the time. But its quite annoying, the sun roof also only goes forward. i will be taking it back to be looked at again soon. But i was wondering if you might have any advice or ideas on what might be the problem?

Thanks

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Could be a faulty ground for the radio or amp. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Jeff G Comments: I have a 2000 bmw z3 roadster 2.8. I have an airbag warning light on. My SRS diagnostic tool indicates Table 03, code 11, supply voltage. Any thoughts on the cause?
August 17, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Was the battery recently discharged? if the fault points to power supply at the control module, I would check power and ground to it. Do not backprobe when testing, remove module and test only when the connector is detached from the control module. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Jan Comments: Hi, I have a 2001 325ci e46 and the airbag light came on right after I had the seat covers on the driver's side replaced the driver's seat had to be removed and put back, and probably the guy didn't disconnect the battery while doing this. I bought the B800 SRS tool for BMW from online and when I first plugged it in, it gave error codes 2 firing circuit, belt tensioner, driver side, 11 firing circuit, belt tensioner, rear left and 14 Firing circuit from Table 10. I reset the airbag light and it came back after a few seconds, this time only showing 14. Here is the link to the manual for the tool: http://www.slideshare.net/QuliarLucy/b800-bmwairbagsrsscanresettoolusermanual. Do you think the culprit is the driver's side belt? I just want to be sure before I go to the dealer, so I don't get ripped off there.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would think there may be an issue with the left side side-airbag. Or the bag has failed from being handled. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Erik Comments: HEllo I Have a 2006 BMW 325i, I have the break and airbag light on? can you tell me what it is?

Dark Abyss Comments: Bought a 2000 BMW 528i. Replaced ignition switch that caused random electrical problems. Attempted a reset with a Peake tool, but the airbag light persists.

Error codes are: F0,11,03,15,1A.
F0=Control Unit Fault, Internal Error

mcc3 Comments: Hi I posted below and just wanted to follow up a bit with something to help those with Internal ECU erroris this different that internal control unit fault? anyway from my post below i have a 323i with error codes
01 - Internal ECU error
03 - Supply voltage
08 - Firing circuit, side airbag left
01 - Internal ECU error

I have heard the internal ecu error requires a new ecu, while waiting for it in the mail i looked into the left circuit and upon finding it to be okay realized you may not be able to clear codes with an internal fault. could not clear any of the codes I tested this by removing my right side airbag and tripping an 09 - Firing circuit, side airbag right code, upon reconnecting it i could NOT clear this code either. It appears an internal error will at least in some if not all cases prevent other codes from being cleared and once tripped will stay until replaced.
Hopes this helps others in this process in the futurewas attempting to clear with the peak research srs tool

Dave Comments: I have a 2000 528i, the air bag light stays on. I tried testing it with a C110 reader. The reader works fine but when checking SRS, it displays No Data Link..any ideas
May 19, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The tool may not work with airbag on your vehicle. You may need a more advanced BMW scan tool to read the codes. There could also be a communication problem with the module, checking with another scan tool can help determine if that is the case.- Nick at Pelican Parts
vilhard Comments: Hi I have a 98 520 e39 and airbag light stays on, codes are:

05/C0 - Belt tensioner, driver's side
08/8A - Side airbag, front left
01/80 - Internal control-unit fault
08/20 - Side airbag, front left

what i have to do that light turns off?
May 19, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: This fault suggests you need a new control module: 01/80 - Internal control-unit fault

Until the module is replaced, it is hard to test and or determine if the other components are faulty or if the codes are erroneous. - Nick at Pelican Parts

kpcerny Comments: I have a 94 325I convertible. Fault codes are 13 fault lamp, 17 Control unit fault temperature and 38 control unit fault swinging voltage test?
May 8, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like a faulty module. I would check power and grounds to the module. If good, the module may be faulty. - Nick at Pelican Parts
E36 325i Comments: My car has NO dampers whatsoever and I hit the only goodforsaken pothole on the newly paved fwy outside of Vegas going about 70mph, it bottomed out HARD. Needless to say the crash detection went off, SRS flashing, hazards turned on. The SRS has been flashing or staying on solid ever since. Can it be reset? I understand I have the misfortune to own the old pre-94 SRS system which can't be reset using the typical readily available scan tools. Can I reset the SRS light and make my airbag system work properly again, or is it going to keep coming back on and if repairable, how and which tool will work on a 1993 325i SRS system? Any help will be much appreciated.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: If the light is ON, there is a fault. You will need to scan the vehicle and identify the fault, then repair the item. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: First, be sure everything you unplugged is plugged in correctly. Then try to clear the fault code. If it does not go way, you may have a wiring issue of faulty component in the airbag system. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Rick Comments: hi , I used the tool and got error codes 01 41 11. the error codes say table 01 , control unit fault, ignition capacitor, airbag driver, and supply voltage??? could you please advice

canoyk Comments: I have a 99 323i wit the SRS light on 4 spoke wheel, I have a Peake R5 tools that I did a scan with no errors, I have a Peake SRS and did a scan and came up with a 02 04 code Firing circuit, driver airbag. Do i just replace the driver airbag and issue solve i hate swapping part? Is there a way to confirm it's the airbag thus a way to test it and make sure I don't have a wiring issue or test the wiring to the bag?
April 2, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Could be the airbag or the clockspring. There are airbag simulators you can connect to the wheel for testing, however they are not easy to find. - Nick at Pelican Parts
jmissile1 Comments: i have a 2008 bmw 328xi . . . the passenger restraint system malfunction light has been on since i bought the car used months ago. Dealer wants 900 for new airbag.
April 1, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: No. it has to be repaired to remedy the light. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Daniel Comments: Hi!
I purchased the Peake R5/SRS from Pelican Parts for my 1994 325i Convertible. The forums/google don't have anything on my issue. Any ideas on what this issue could be? what is signal track M1/M2?

My trouble codes are:
11 - Supply Voltage
13 - Fault Lamp
47 - Control Unit Fault, signal track M1
48 - Control Unit Fault, signal track M2

Followup from the Pelican Staff: This sounds like a faulty control unit. I would confirm powers and ground are good to the module. - Nick at Pelican Parts
MCC3 Comments: Hi I have a 99 323i with codes: 02 03 01 08 01 - in that order
02- table 2
03 - Supply voltage
01 - Internal ECU error
08 - Firing circuit, side airbag, front left side
01 - Internal ECU errorwhy does this come up twice?
- end of codes
codes persist through reset, any suggestions?
March 23, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: With the internal ECU code, the only fix for that is replacing the control module. Be sure powers and grounds to it are ok. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Dan Comments: I have a 2000 323i, I reset my airbag light with a snap-on tool, the light came back five hours later. The code was 01, do you have any idea what part needs replacing? Thank you in advance.

starshajay Comments: I have a 1999 BMW 323i. All the dashboard lights won't go out and stays on while the car is on. I had it looked at by 2 mechanics and they both said the vehicle computer needs to be replaced. They also said the diagnostic port under the driver side dashboard is broken so they couldn't do the scan. The car is 15 years old with 160,000 miles. Was wondering if it's worth fixing or should I sell.
February 15, 2014

Peter Comments: I removed my seats to fix the dreaded twisting seats in the E-39. After doing so my airbag light came on and my car will not crank. What can I do to fix the problem? The car ran fine before I did this cosmetic fix. I need your help!!
February 8, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You'll need to see what fault code is stored for the airbag. It might be as simple as clear the code. As far as the no start, I can't help without knowing what is missing from the system when you are trying to start it. When your engine doesn’t start you’ll want to check the basics. Check spark, fuel injector pulse and pressure fuel, volume and quality. Are there any fault codes? Once you figure out what is missing, it will be easier to diagnose.

They have the same part number of 65.77-8372521 and MRSZ2/12 9441. If I was to replace the airbag sensor would it need to be recoded? Can you use the VAR 1NF inplace of a 2xJCX. Thanks for your help.

kennedy3ncsb Comments: Nick, the reader gave me code 2 for table 2 code 1 internal ecu error, code 3 supply voltage, code 9 firing circuit side airbag front right side, and code 8 firing circuit side front left side. I only had the right side code and I unplugged the left side airbag to check to see if the voltage was the same. I immediately plug the left side in again and I got the same codes adding the left side. I do not see how the plastic part broke that unshorts the shorting bar by simply unplugging the connector and replugging it. I can not figure this out. Please help!!! My original post was on 10-17 then on 10-25. Thanks for any help you could supply.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: An internal ECU code is cut and dry. Usually the ECU is faulty. Let's focus on that. I would check the powers and grounds to the ECU, if they are good, replace it.

The fault codes for the bags, I would address those once the internal ECU fault is dealt with. They may be erroneous.- Nick at Pelican Parts

kennedy3ncsb Comments: Thanks Nick, I did some testing and discover the same voltage reading on both driver's and passenger's airbag. I tried replacing the passenger airbag and wiring to correct code. Upon testing I unplugged the driver's side airbag and I have the b800 and peak tool. I read the codes and they were the same as before with the exception of a code adding the driver's side airbag. Neither tool will reset the light does my ecu need programming? These codes came from unplugging the airbag there is no faults to correct. I have heard that on some 323i these tools do not work. Have you heard of this? Can you offer any suggestions? I have a 99 323i. Thanks.

Snakey Comments: Don't let your dog jump into the front seat. Mine destroyed my seat sensor mat and it will cost me £600 to repair as they have to take the entire seat apart. I am trying to find a fix by buying a sensor plug and play emulator. BMW do not agree to this low cost £60 solution but I am just not going to pay such a huge amount to fix the official way.

kennedyncsb Comments: I have a 99 323i 4 door. I changed the passenger front regulator and never unplugged the airbag. When finished airbag light came on. I read codes from a b800 srs reader and got code 2 for table 2 code 1 internal ecu error, code 3 supply voltage, code 9 firing circuit side airbag front right side. Code will not reset. Any suggestions?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Did you let the air bag hang while you changed the regulator? I would check the wires and the connector and make sure they are ok. There is a plastic part in the connector that unshorts the shorting bar in the air bag connector, it could be broken.

Bud Comments: I have a 1999 Z3 2.3 and have a problem with a noise in the rear passenger side. When I accelerate in second and third gear at a higher than normal speed it sounds as if I am running over a rumble strip. Took it to a local garage that services German made cars and he thought it was the center support barren. Charged me 350 to replace it and has not helped. I order and replace the sway bar links and rear shocks myself. The shocks were dead and needed replaced. Still have the problem but not quite as bad. Everything else seems to be tight and no signs of wear. Anyone have any suggestions?

havoc34dan Comments: Hi I really need help in this. first discover after changing out my 98 328i seats to M3 seats. Connected and transferred the seat belt buckle to the M3 seats. Less the passanger's side seat sensor. So expected the SRS light to come on. But it didn't read further and come to know it must do it a self test on turn the car on. But also realised it didn't. Took out the cluster and found bulb blown. Changed it and expected the light to come on. But nothing happen. No light nothing. Checked fuse in engine bay and found it still intact but change it on the safe side. Still nothing. Help what's wrong??

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Indeed this is an unusual problem to have. Most people have the problem where the light is on and they can't seem to get it to go off. It's clear here that there is a problem with your airbag system, possibly with the control unit. Pelican cells and airbag diagnostic tool that reads all the codes that are associated with the airbag system. The first thing I would do is plug this into the car and see if it registers any fault. However if your control unit is faulty it may not even work or show you any fault codes. Other than that I'm not sure what to recommend? - Wayne at Pelican Parts

CKC Comments: I have a 1999 323i with close to 192,000 miles that has been running well, but both the traction control and anti-lock brake indicator lights illuminate from time to time. I do not recall the codes the car produced, but was told that the repair would be expensive and not worth it due to the age of the caras long as the lights were not illuminated all the time. Thoughts? In addition, my check engine light has been illuminated since January. All the repairs have been made for the codes the car produced, but the light remains on. My mechanic said that the fuel lines that run the length of the car may be leaking ever so slightly and causing the emissions error. Jack Comments: I have a '97 318i and the body shop had to remove my drivers side seat in order to straighten the frame from a minor right front end collision my son hit a curb, and when the seat was replaced, even though the air bag had been reconnected the airbag dashboard light wouldn't go off. My independent mechanic a certified master mechanic, told me that a "special tool" was needed to reset it and that only a BMW dealer could do it. Of course when I called the nearest dealer I immediately got a $150 quote for what amounts to less than a 5 minute job, so I didn't get the sensor reset. After driving it for about a year and a half later, our of no where the light finally wnnt out. I had my mechanic check the light and the light is still fine and everything is working. Just one of those weird BMW things I guess.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: The seat belts have pyrotechnic tensioners tied in with the multiple restraint system. In case of an accident, the belt tensioner goes off and tightens the belt. That sounds like what happened in your car. I would remove the belt tensioner and compare its length to a new one. It will probably be 2 inches shorter, indicating that it went off and needs to be replaced. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Doug Comments: Hi. I have the Peake r5/srs tool. I just bought a 1994 530it and the airbag light is on. I use the peake tool and it flashes E and 10. when I clear the code the tool flashes E and 11. In either case once it does that the tool is hung, wont respond to any buttons until removed and reinserted. where upon it gives E and 10 flashing again. What can the problem be??
April 14, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I'm not sure, I haven't encountered that error - it may indicate a problem with your SRS computer. I would email Peake Research and ask them, if that is not contained in the manual that comes with the tool. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Welcome123 Comments: Anyone know where I can find the airbag contol module on my 2000 BMW Z3 the SRS light? I just purchased the car and the SRS light won't go off. The BMW folks are blaming the module.
April 10, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I'm not exactly sure on your Z3 - I think it might be located under the dash, sort of near / under the glove box area. I would get the SRS tool and see what the problem is yourself - I don't tend to trust the dealer on issues like these. This is now an 11-year old car too - they don't tend to see too many of them in the dealership these days! - Wayne at Pelican Parts
jedimaster Comments: Hi, I recently changed front seats on my E38, caused an error code to appear - 'Airbag Internal control unit fault.'

I changed the airbag ECU, but now the airbags in front is all okay, but the error code appears for all the airbags in the rear.

Using diagnostic tool, I can clear the airbag light on the dash. But everytime I switch off ignition, and switch it back on, the fault appears again.

Are there any tools to fix this problem?
March 31, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It's clear that the airbag computer is expecting to see something that is not there. I'm not sure if the seats you put in are cooperating with the computer - the seat belt receptacles in particular need to be properly matched. I would try putting the old seats back in and resetting the lamp to see if the message comes back. If it does not, then there's something off with the wiring of the new seats. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Sajid Comments: The R5 SRS toll delivered today. I tried to check the code as per Instruction Manual and got these codes correct me if I am reading it wrong:
04-Table 04
50-Supply voltage
FO-Internal Error What does this mean
03- Is this a table # or I should read it fault#3 in Table#4
61-Seat belt buckle switch, passenger
70-Seat occupancy sensor

Can you please advise that how much it should cost me to get the above faults fixed.
March 30, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The airbag computer can be annoying to diagnose. The first time you read the codes, you will find just about every code triggered since the car was new. I would write them down (as you did here), and then clear them all out. Then turn the car on and off, and see what codes reappear. Those will be the ones that you need to worry about. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Cat Comments: HELP! I've taken on a project for a friend selling his 2000 Z3 with the 2.5L. Air Bag light has been on for 2 yrs and randomly a day after he picked the car up from the BMW Dealer after routine maint; no previous accidents to this car either. I had my German mechanic look at it, they apparently can not pinpoint the exact location; Seat Belt, sensors under the seats or Air Bag Sensor Control Unit. I've removed the base of the steering column, the Air Bag Sensor Control Unit is rubbing on the steering wheel, appears to have a screw missing, I replaced it and of course it doesn't make a difference...I am truly not sure where to start 1st? What do you recommend?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You need to get the airbag tool, and it will tell you what is wrong with the system. Otherwise, you're just randomly guessing. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
g partida Comments: I replaced the brakes on may 528i. 2000. And the dach light won't go off how do i reset it.
February 28, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The brake pad sensors control this lamp. If the sensors triggered the lamp to begin with, then you must replace them (they are one-time use only). If they are brand new sensors, then the connector is probably not well seated in the plug. I would unplug and then replug in all of the sensors to make sure the connection is good. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Sajid Comments: I have BMW 325ci 2003 model. Last week, went to a local workshop and got the radiator and water pump changed and since then the airbag light is on. I think the mechanic has messed with the airbag sensor front bumper during installing the new radiator and water pump. I went back to mechanic and he said he don’t know where is airbag sensor. Can you please guide me, how can I resolve this issue without spending money as I already spent a lot on radiator and water pump. Sajid +12023446414

January 26, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Take a look at the codes that the system is outputting using the tool described in this article. If there are any sensors that need to be replaced, the tool will tell you. The seat belt pyro release indeed probably needs to be replaced on the driver's side. Maybe some other sensors - the tool will tell you which ones. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
FZ1DBA Comments: I have a 2000 Z3 with the SRS light that will not reset. I have the Peak tool and the code I get is 'Low Voltage'. The battery is a couple of years old and seems fine. I did charge it overnight to be sure but no luck. Any ideas?
December 24, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hmm, "low voltage" certainly isn't very descriptive. I would suggest putting the battery charger on the battery and running the codes with it attached. Also try perhaps cleaning the terminals of the battery and measure the actual voltage (although it should be fine if you have the charger attached). You also might want to try reseating the connectors that attach to the SRS computer / controller. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

gmykytyn Comments: I have a 2006 325i. I ran out of gas. I had my hazzards on while waiting for gas. While waiting, all the warning display lights started flickering and then power went dead. I got gas and a jump and the car seemed to work fine except the seatbelt, brake light and airbag warning light were on. Sunday the battery died again but I was able to jump it. How do I correcdt this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
December 15, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The airbag system will sometimes trigger a warning lamp if the battery has died. I would replace the battery right away, and then reset the codes. That should hopefully fix the problem. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
cadao Comments: Thank for your response. You mean sensor mat which costs around $124, right.
December 13, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Yup, that sounds about right. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
cadao15@yahoo.com Comments: Thank you for your response, the seat sensor is under the seat passenger side, not inside the seat. I did change sensor unit, but error code still 1A table 03.
December 12, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: There is a thin sensor that looks like a 2-foot square piece of plastic with a lot of black dots on it. That is the seat occupancy sensor, and that is what often fails. I would characterize that as being inside the seat (under the cushion) - you have to take the whole seat apart to get to it. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
cadao Comments: I'm experiencing the "airnag warning light" constantly on. I bought airbag reset tool and found error code in table 03, code 1A "seat occupied recognition 1". I change control unit for SRS System passenger seat sensor, and use reset tool to clear error code, but airbag light still on?? Help please.

My car is BMW 325i 2001.
December 11, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You said you changed the control unit, do you mean you changed the actual seat sensor inside the seat? Changing this out *should* fix the problem - perhaps the connector is loose or corroded from being under the seat? - Wayne at Pelican Parts
dimon Comments: I have diagnosed and found a code to why my srs light is on. It shows code 20, now that i have the code, where do i look to see what it means
November 17, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The SRS tool has a booklet that comes with it that describes all of the codes. You should refer to the code in the book to find out which error that corresponds to (different code readers sometimes have different codes). - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Ryan P. Comments: I have a '93 E36 with an SRS light. I read on the SRS reset tool description that it does not work for pre-1994 models. The previous owner said that the light came on due removing the front seats. What is the method of resetting the light if the tool only works for 1994 and later vehicles?
October 26, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: There are some more expensive and rarer factory tools that can reset the lamp. I would take the car to the dealership and ask them to do it, or find a good independent mechanic who has the proper tools. Hopefully, it's as easy as simply resetting the lamp, and there's nothing actually wrong with the system. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

October 21, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I'm not sure on this one, I think you'll have to have someone with the BMW factory tool plug it in and take a closer look. It may be that the air bag computer needs replacing. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

I recently was sent for duty in Germany and had to have it inspected to get it registered to drive here. I failed my inspection because my airbag indicator never illuminated. Is it suppose to come on initially when the ignition switch is turned on? If so, could it be anything serious other than a bulb?
September 30, 2010

Rushed Comments: My side airbag deployed on my e46 m3 after losing control and hitting a curb. I have replaced the side airbag, and tried resetting the airbag light at a garage, however it would not disapear? any ideas?
September 6, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The airbag system will give you trouble codes, corresponding to what faults it finds. There's probably another component that needs to be replaced (belt buckle firing mechanism perhaps?). The codes will tell you - the shopt that reset them for you should have written them down. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
joas Comments: what about a bad BST i dont wana change the cable... the pelican will be able to turn off the light? will come back again?
September 1, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The airbag tool will turn off trouble codes in the SRS system, but they might just come right back on again if the problem still exists. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Brian Comments: Took my 1994 325i to the dealership to diagnose the airbag lamp, and they told me the control unit needs to be replaced. Noticed you sell one for around $500.00 much cheaper than the $1450 the dealership charges. Is there a place to get these things encoded and programmed? Do they need the car top do it? Any idea how much that would cost?
August 15, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Typically, the dealer or a good independent shop needs to program the unit. The convertible top is not attached to the car? I have no idea as to whether that would affect the programming of the unit. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Gino Comments: Hi there, i am writing from South Africa. I bumped my E46 agaist a pole. Damage to my two left doors and left control arm caused the two front aibags to pop out. For some reason the car wont start. Is it because the airbags deployed and what would costs am i looking at.
August 6, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don't think that it's related to the airbags, but it might be caused by the airbag deployment system. While I'm not completely sure with the BMW E46, modern cars have all sorts of safety mechanisms that shut of fuel and other systems if it senses that the car has been in an accident. You'll probably have to take it to someone who has access to the BMW factory tool or equivalent so that they can check out the SRS (airbag) system and the car in general. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Joe Comments: My 2001 330CI ABS and Brake lights are 'on' the dashboard. My mechanic did a recent brake job, so I know I don't have a brake problem. Can the Peake tool re-set it to 'off'?
August 5, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: With the sensor replaced properly, the lamp should not be on. Was the lamp on when your mechanic returned the car to you? Should not have been that way. I would take it back to him and show him the lamp - sounds a bit shoddy to me. I don't think the Peake tool will reset this lamp. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
bigjon9000 Comments: my 2001 325I has a airbag warning light constantly. I had it in the shop last year because of an accident and they replaced the passenger seatbelt latch assy I know this because they put in the wrong 1 and the rease is backwards now. could this cause the problem?
August 3, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Probably not the problem, but if they can't put in a seat belt properly, they obviously can't turn off your airbag lamp or diagnose the problem either. Check in our tech articles section - we have an article on troubleshooting airbag lamp codes. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Pav Comments: BMW 525 TDS SE Auto 1998 UK SPEC
I solved my ABS & Traction control light problem on the dash by initially changing the 'Ignition switch' with no success, then finally the 'front left nearside in the UK ! speed sensor ... this solved my problem !!!
However, I do still have the dreaded 'Radio illuminated , but no sound' problem ! I was told this would rectify after the switch was changed, but nothing, then again I was told the speed sensor might affect the radio too, as it has the 'Speed volume' option, again this did not solve the problem ! Any Ideas ?

Also .... the gear change problem as I explained earlier in the 'thread' is still causing me upset !

Bess Comments: Ten days after leaving the shop, the airbag light on my '97 Z3 is again illuminated. I am at my wit's end. My car only has 80K miles and has been meticulously maintained. The entire SRS system has been replaced. My husband and I both drive this vehicle, so the seat is readjusted a few times a week. I travelled 80 miles in a driving rain storm last week. I am in the Chicago area. Thoughts?
June 28, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would suggest getting one of the air bag code readers that we sell and trying to figure out what exactly the problem is. Sounds like the shop you're taking it to doesn't have one of those readers? - Wayne at Pelican Parts
SRS Code 41 Comments: I have a 1994 325ci with airbag warning light on. I used the Peake tool to check and am getting a code 41 Control UnitFault, Autarky Capacitor . First, what is a Autarky Capacitor? Second, where is it located? Finally, where do I buy one?
June 18, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I'm not completely sure, but I think that capacitor is internal to the unit and is like a battery that keeps the unit powered up for a while even after power has been removed (as might be in the case of an accident). I'm guessing that the Autarky Capacitor is internal to the controller unit, and that this fault indicates a faulty controller? - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Bee Comments: My 1997 Z3 has had the entire SRS system replaced - piece by piece. In 2005 the seat belt receptacle was replaced. Last summer the garage replaced the seat belt tensioner. It was then that I discovered this forum and the persistence of the SRS problem. Three weeks ago, my air bag light flashed again and the garage recommended replacing the module because everything else had been replaced. I pushed back on this, but they insisted. Thirteen days after leaving the garage paying almost $800 the light flashed again. They insisted the wiring was shorting out and they replaced the harness - to the tune of another $600. Again, I pushed back on this for a variety of reasons. My garage told me that BMW doesn't even sell the harness and they made one. My ?: Was I a fool to allow these repairs? How much would it have cost to replace the entire SRS system in a single repair?
June 16, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: That's a tough call - it sounds like the shop that was doing the work was merely replacing parts instead of actually diagnosing the problem. That is the difference between a good shop and a poor one - their ability to actually diagnose instead of just replace parts. It is indeed a dying art. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
John from Buffalo Comments: Read more of the comments here, so I get the BMW $$ stick. Guess I'll have to talk to my "own" mechanic and work out some other work, and just have him look at it - sure he has a diagnose kit. Meh ... BMW dealership is such a rip-off either way.
May 31, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Thanks for the feedback. Glad we could help.
- Nick at Pelican Parts

John from Buffalo Comments: I have a BMW Z3, 1998 with this exact problem. So, since I now KNOW the problem I just have to instruct the mechanic to just "do it" vs. "diagnose it". So, it's like a $90 service fee - vs. buying the $135 device, then monkey-wrenching it myself, possibly doing more harm. Not saying I'm stupid, but even if it costs me $135 for them to do it ... works for me, and I'm not stuck with a tool I'll never use again.

My 2c.

I experienced a problem a while back with the Auto gearbox - under full throttle the car struggled to change from 3rd to 4th gear ... hanging onto the gear until REDLINE or I had to feather the throttle to get it to change up !
If I am steady on the throttle it goes through the box no problem !

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would see if someone can pull codes from the Transmission. The electrical gremlins you have with your cluster may be causing problems with your transmission getting confused - I would bet that they may be related. The speed sensor might indeed be confusing the transmission. Your Euro Diesel car is not sold here in the states so I don't have any direct experience with them, unfortunately. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Pav Comments: Hello there - I have a 1997 UK SPEC 525 TDS SE AUTO - Over the last 2 years or so I have had a few electrical gremlins.
Airbag light on, Radio Illuminated but not functioning, sun visor light when turned on , the interior light coming on , and also coinsiding with the car horn not working at times. I got told it would be the ignition switch which I changed last week but I still have the fault.... will I need to reset the codes ?
Also the ABS light and traction control light and Brake pad warning light are constantly on , again someone mentioned the rear left speed sensor on the wheel .... any ideas ?

BMWDRVR Comments: My 2006 BMW 325i Sport E90 was in an accident and I purchased it salvaged. Everything has been fixed except for the airbag and seatbelt light. I tried many things and ultimately surrendered and took my car to the BMW dealer to diagnose the problem. This is what happened:

He ran the car through the "initial" diagnostic check for a cost of $150, and went on to say that it would require $500 to run more tests and identify EXACTLY what the problem is. This was excluding whatever costs I might incur in order to have the repairs made, and at this point I declined further testing and took what info I had.

2 codes were identified from the initial testing. They are in the order of Code - Description:

93C8 - MRS: Airbag front sensor, left

93B6 - MRS: Seat belt tensioner, rear right

Now I think I can understand what these codes mean, but I'm not sure. After the accident I had a company clear/reset the airbag computer module the brain, and I replaced the airbag for the steering wheel. The company said the module tested properly for functionality, but I'm not sure whether the error is pointing to the airbag computer module, or the driver airbag itself. Do you happen to be able to understand what the code says to help me identify the problem??

For the seat belt tensioner, it seems self-explanatory, but I don't want to forgo $150 for a new tensioner only to find that the problem is something else.

Any help you can provide, or any location you can refer me to for help is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Hi there. There are multiple sensors in the airbag system that trigger the system to fire. I believe that many of these are one-time-use-only, like the front trigger sensors located in the front trunk. Sounds like your front sensor was never replaced after the accident, or the wire harness was damaged / clipped. The seat belt tensioner is typically used to figure out if someone is sitting in the seat with a seat belt on. Typically, the airbag system will still function normally with this fault. I would replace the front sensor (probably located in the engine compartment), and the seat belt receptacle. You can also trick the system to test by jumpering the wires in the seat belt and rechecking the codes. We sell an SRS code reader for less than the $150 you paid the dealer. Hope this helps. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

April 28, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I've seen that site before. It's a bandaid for the problem, and there's some incorrect information on the site too. When your airbag light is on, it does not mean that the entire system is disabled, it just means that there is a fault. I believe that when the sensor fails, the airbag automatically defaults to "passenger in seat." I have had people tell me first hand that they have had the airbag lamp on the dash, and then have gotten into an accident, and the airbags have deployed normally. So, don't necessarily believe the scare tactics.

The passenger seat sensor is really designed for one purpose - to prevent the airbag going off when it's not needed. From what I gather, this is primarily a cost savings feature, as in the early days, there were thousands of airbags being deployed that didn't need to be. I think the auto industry pushed back on this, and then finally implemented this after pressure from the insurance industry, who was paying for all of the used passenger airbags. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Slave2 Comments: What can we do if we have a older 1992 325is? Those Peake code re-setters don't list any for the older cars like mine.
What should we do?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Your vehicle is listed here: http://www.peakeresearch.com/manuals/FCX3-manual%201.0%20NA.pdf

I would confirm it matches your specs, then locate that tool from Peak. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Daz Comments: Hi can I use this tool on my 1993 BMW 740iL? The light is on aswell.
December 18, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sorry, the Peake website says this works with most 1994 and later BMWs. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Harry Comments: Hi, is there any SRS diagnostic/reset tool that works on a 1997 BMW 318i SE E36? Cheers

Followup from the Pelican Staff: This tool should work: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/101P/POR_101P_PRJ083_pg1.htm - Nick at Pelican Parts
ghalk Comments: hi..i have a 2001 325xi someone recently broke into my car from the driver side window...im guessing when they put the new window it came on...what do you think it is?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Could be side airbag? I would check the fault codes before replacing parts. - Nick at Pelican Parts
reden Comments: Hi, my airbag light is on, on my 328i 2000,it happened when I replaced the regulator on the driver side door, I think it happened when I turn on the ignition to bring up the window
October 27, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Yup, you need to go to a shop to have that reset, or you can reset it yourself with the Peake Research SRS tool. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Sajah Comments: Hi, i have a 2002 320i with the passenger side airbag light on. I'm not sure when it came on but back in June i took the car in for an emission test. Could this have caused the light to stay on and how can i get it cleared.
Many thanks.
October 22, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Not likely - you probably have a problem with the system. Although the inspection guy might have bumped or damaged a sensor under the hood (they are typically located on each side of the inside fender and often get bumped by inexperienced mechanics). You need to have the code read out to figure out what the problem is, like in this article: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/Mult-Air_Bag_Lamp/Mult-Air_Bag_Lamp.htm - Wayne at Pelican Parts
B. Comments: Is there an SRS diagnostic/reset tool that works on a 2005 BMW X3, 3.0i? E83
October 7, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Yes, the Peake Research tool (which we sell in the catalog) should work for your car. The model number is R5/FCX-3. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Mike B Comments: How do I clear error code CC ID 132 from my 2007 328i BMW? This code is for a LF turn signal bulb, which I have replaced, but the error indication will not go away.
October 5, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Odd, I think that should clear itself. Are all elements on and working in the bulb? Sometimes there are two, and it's difficult to tell if they are out? Try comparing to the right side carefully. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Stone Comments: I've got a 2003 BMW 325xi, had a coilover kit installed at a local performance shop. When I got the car back the airbag light was on. The shop said I could bring it in and they would look the system over and reset the light, but in the interested of getting a new toy . . . will a ELM327 w/ bluetooth reset the airbag code? **Understand that ther emay be some underlying mechanical problem that won't be fixed**
September 8, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: No, I don;t think the Elm will do it. - Nick at Pelican Parts
trafficman Comments: I have a 2003 x5 3.0, the driver door handle needed to be replaced now the driver air bag code keeps coming on after being reset by a repair shop several times the same day. The only reason I can think of why the light came on in the first place is that the ignition was turned on to put the window up after the ddoor airbag was unplugged. Any help appreciated. Thanks
August 27, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Yes, turning on the ignition would do that. However, if the light keeps coming on, then they might have not plugged everything in correctly, or damaged a wire replacing the door handle. You can read the specific code using the code reader featured in this article: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/Mult-Air_Bag_Lamp/Mult-Air_Bag_Lamp.htm. That should give you some more clues.- Wayne at Pelican Parts
Neece Comments: the make and model of my vehicle is a 2001 BMW 525i E39. There is a Open National Recall on the "airbag control unit". I am the 2nd owner of this vehicle. Apparently, the first owner did not acknowledge the recall letter. I'm so thankful of my success in digging into this issue further due to the ongoing problem of after having the lamp recoded and constant repeat every 6 wks.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Thanks for the additional info. We appreciate it.

Neece Comments: after having headaches for months about my airbag lamp on. I decided to conduct a search and I located a Open National recall on the "airbag control unit". I was so relieved that finally this issue w/b off my plate. The airbag control unit was replaced via a BMW Svc Ctr. For months, I paid to have it recoded, if I would have done this sooner, I would have saved myself $$$ and the popping of Aleve

Followup from the Pelican Staff: That's good info, can you share exactly what year and specific model of your car this was? - Wayne at Pelican Parts
alex Comments: i need two airbags for my bmw 530xi 2006, one for passenger sida, and steering airbag.

Neece Comments: Thank u for the immediate response. Each time it was reset by a "code reader". The code reading, "front crash impact" but there was/has not been any impact nor no airbag deployment. I will not have it disconnected, do not plan on selling the vehicle. Wish it was something simple, reading does not say anymore. If it is the "seatbelt sensor", would the code reader state that? The front bumper is loose from damaged caused by the previous owner I'm the 2nd owner Do you sell this "seatbeat sensor"? Is this the same as "seatbelt receptable"? This is a nuisance not pinpointing the issue to get it repaired.
August 2, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It's not the seat belt sensor, it's probably one of the crash sensors at the front of the car. Check to make sure the plugs are well seated in the sensors and that they have not been damaged by someone working on the car? - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Neece Comments: Another part to my comment, can this "airbag warning light" be disconnected? If so, will it cause a chain reaction to anything else within the E39 series? Like, will it cause the airbag to deploy without warning because it's disconnected or over a period time staying on, with the airbag deploy while driving?
August 2, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: You should have the airbag warning lamp diagnosed by someone with a code reader, or buy the code reader shown here (I believe there are separate versions that work with various E39 models). In most cases, it may be something simple like your seatbeat sensor. However, you should get it fixed. Disconnecting the light is really not a good way to go, and if you sell the car in that condition, it may make you liable for injuries received by the buyer. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
Neece Comments: I am experiencing the "airbag warning light". I think mines could be the seat belt or having a loose front bumper how do I determine which one is causing it? It is definitely a nuisance. The code states "front crash impact". I have had the vehicle for two years, this just recently started 2 months ago and keeps happening every 5 wks after resetting. It is a financially hardship keep paying to have it reset. Does this work on E39 2001?
August 2, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I think it works up until 2003, so you should be OK. - Nick at Pelican Parts
Drock Comments: Can this be used on and e30
May 4, 2009
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sorry, 1994 and later cars according to Peake Research. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
