BMW E39 models utilize two HVAC fresh air cabin micro-filters. The micro-filter helps eliminate dirt and dust particles from entering the vehicle interior. It also protects HVAC system components from contamination. A dirty heater core would not provide sufficient heat and a dirty evaporator would not provide sufficient cooling. The micro-filters are located in the wiper cowl area beneath the lid. Always replace both micro-filters at the same time.

BMW recommends replacing the fresh air cabin micro-filter every 10,000 miles or every other oil change.

In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with changing the cabin micro-filter. It is quite easy and can be done in a few minutes.

Open engine hood.

There are two micro-filters, located under covers on each side of the engine compartment.
