Parts Required:

Windshield wiper linkage and motor assembly, wiper blades, wiper cowl trim

Hot Tip:

Use paint or crayon to mark location of wiper arms before removing

Performance Gain:

Repair faulty wiper blades / wiper motor or wiper motor linkage

Complementary Modification:

Replace wiper blades when servicing motor

This article will cover replacing the windshield wiper components on BMW E90 models. The wiper blades are serviced easily and the wiper motor can be replaced in a few hours. The wiper motor itself can fail, creating a situation where the wipers do not work or do not properly park. If the wipers do not work at all, check that the wiper pivots move free and are not bound with corrosion. To do this, follow the steps noted below. Replace your wiper blades if they are chattering or streaking, and always use a good quality blade.

In this tech article, I will go over replacing the components of the windshield wiper system.

Wiper blade replacing:
Press locking tab (green arrow) to release wiper arm cover from wiper arm.
Figure 1

Press locking tab (green arrow) to release wiper arm cover from wiper arm.

Lift wiper arm cover off arm, front of cover first.
Figure 2

Lift wiper arm cover off arm, front of cover first.

Next, rotate wiper blade 90ÃÆ'‚°, then slide wiper blade off wiper arm (green arrow).
Figure 3

Next, rotate wiper blade 90°, then slide wiper blade off wiper arm (green arrow). Slide new wiper blade on wiper arm, rotate 90° and install cover. Be sure you hear a click when you snap cover into place. This confirms it is properly attached.

Wiper motor replacing: Disconnect negative battery cable. See our tech article on battery replacing and reconnecting notes. Remove cabin microfilter housingSee our tech article on engine covers, removing.
Working at center of windshield wiper cowl, remove plastic cap using a flatblade screwdriver.

Next you have to remove the strut brace from the engine compartment.
Figure 5

Next you have to remove the strut brace from the engine compartment. This improves access to the strut fasteners. Remove two inverted Torx fasteners, yellow arrow points to E14, green arrow points to E18. Once fasteners are removed, remove strut brace from engine compartment. Driver side brace shown in photo, remove passenger side also.

Open hood, then remove the wiper arm nut trim cap.
Figure 6

Open hood, then remove the wiper arm nut trim cap. (green arrow). Do this for each wiper arm.

Next, remove the two16mm wiper arm nuts.
Figure 7

Next, remove the two16mm wiper arm nuts. (green arrow) Photo shows right side wiper arm, left side wiper arm is the same.

I like to mark the position of the wiper arms using a crayon.
Figure 8

I like to mark the position of the wiper arms using a crayon. This helps to get the wiper arm in same position when reinstalling.

Next, you have to remove the wiper arms.
Figure 9

Next, you have to remove the wiper arms. What I do is open the hood, then wiggle the wiper arm to remove from it from the shaft. If you press on the wiper arm near the pivot (green arrow) it will loosen up, then continue to wiggle it off. Be careful not to scratch paint when wiper arm comes loose.

Working at the right side of the wiper cowl, pull the washer hose off the cowl and lay it aside out of your way.

Next, you have to disconnect the heated washer nozzle electrical connectors.
Figure 11

Next, you have to disconnect the heated washer nozzle electrical connectors. (green arrows) the connectors are located inside the right side wiper cowl, visible through the intake for the heater blower motor. Press the release tab and pull the electrical connector apart.

Next, pull the weather strip (green arrow) off the front of the wiper cowl.
Figure 12

Next, pull the weather strip (green arrow) off the front of the wiper cowl.

Now you have to remove the wiper cowl trim.
Figure 13

Now you have to remove the wiper cowl trim. Start by grabbing at right corner and pulling up, gently removing the trim piece from the mounting bracket located at the base of the windshield. Once detached, remove from vehicle and store in a safe place.

Next you have to remove the trim cover from the cowl area (yellow arrow).
Figure 14

Next you have to remove the trim cover from the cowl area (yellow arrow). Start by removing two 10mm fasteners (green arrows) on the right side of cover.

Then remove the two 10mm fasteners (green arrows) located inside the cover.
Figure 15

Then remove the two 10mm fasteners (green arrows) located inside the cover.

Once you remove the fasteners, remove the trim cover.
Figure 16

Once you remove the fasteners, remove the trim cover. Lift the left side out first, then slide it out of the wiper cowl area.

Now it's time to remove the wiper assembly.
Figure 17

Now it's time to remove the wiper assembly. Start by detaching the wiring harness from the wiper assembly. (yellow arrows) Then remove two 10mm wiper assembly fasteners. (green arrows)

Lift wiper assembly up and slide out of cowl far enough to access electrical connector.

Then disconnect wiper motor electrical connector by release tabs and sliding off.
Figure 19

Then disconnect wiper motor electrical connector by release tabs and sliding off. (green arrow).

BMW does not sell the wiper motor or assembly as separate parts. This does not mean there will not be an aftermarket replacement part. Or, you could be replacing the motor or linkage assembly with used parts from a donor car. Use the following steps to separate the motor from the linkage.
Place the wiper linkage on a solid surface.
Figure 20

Place the wiper linkage on a solid surface. Then remove the linkage from the wiper motor pivot. (green arrow) I like to use a trim panel tool to lever it off the ball joint.

Next remove four 10mm wiper motor fasteners.
Figure 21

Next remove four 10mm wiper motor fasteners. (green arrows) Then separate wiper motor from wiper assembly.

If you are reusing the wiper arm pivot assembly it is a good idea to inspect the wiper arm pivots.
Figure 22

If you are reusing the wiper arm pivot assembly it is a good idea to inspect the wiper arm pivots. Once the linkage assembly has been removed, check that both wiper pivots move freely and without resistance. You can do this by grabbing linkage and moving back and forth.

Install new wiper motor and on linkage assembly.
Figure 23

Install new wiper motor and on linkage assembly. Then use a pair of channel locks to snap ball socket onto ball joint. Be sure this engages properly. You don't want to find out later it wasn't securely installed when you reassemble everything. Then install assembly into vehicle. Install all fasteners finger tight, then tighten, this ensures proper assembly alignment. Connect battery and turn wipers ON then OFF. This will PARK the wipers. Install wiper arms with blades in position they were removed and tighten fasteners. Install trim caps. Then reassemble remaining items in reverse order of removal. Once complete, check wiper operation.

Abdul Comments: Another set of great instructions! I just want to say thank you. Driving with windshield wipers stuck in the up position was quite embarrassing, especially at the car wash, lol.
