Replacing Your BMW Brake Ducts

Parts Required:

Brake duct, splash shield

Hot Tip:

Have screws on hand

Performance Gain:

Proper brake cooling.

Complementary Modification:

Install screen to keep out large debris

The brake cooling duct is located in the right and left corner of front bumper. Impact with a parking block, curb, or large speed bump can damage the brake duct and lower splash shield. This repair can be done by removing the front wheel and working in the wheel well.

Raise vehicle off ground and support safely using a jack stand. (See our article on jacking up your vehicle for more info).

Remove wheel from side you are replacing brake duct on.

Working at bottom front corner of bumper, remove four 8mm fasteners.

Working at front of wheel well liner, remove four 8mm fasteners.

Working at front of wheel well liner, remove one 8mm fastener (green arrow) and one 10mm plastic nut (yellow arrow).

Pull front section of wheel well liner down and away from fender.

Pull front section of wheel well liner down and away from fender. Then remove from vehicle. Remove front bumper. See our tech on front bumper replacing.

Working at front of vehicle, remove 8mm brake duct fastener.

Then, remove brake duct from vehicle.

Then, remove brake duct from vehicle.

When installing brake duct, align plastic pins with holes in body.

To replace the front mud flap, remove two 8mm fasteners (green arrows) and one plastic rivet (yellow arrow).

To replace the front mud flap, remove two 8mm fasteners (green arrows) and one plastic rivet (yellow arrow). Install front bumper and front section of wheel well liner.

  Followup from the Pelican Staff: I can't help without knowing what is missing from the system when you are trying to start it. When your engine doesn’t start you’ll want to check the basics. Check spark, fuel injector pulse and fuel pressure, volume, quality and engine compression. Are there any fault codes? Once you figure out what is missing, it will be easier to diagnose.
