The window regulator is the mechanical track and guide for lifting the door window glass. The front door of your vehicle has a window regulator with two rails, while the rear door only has one rail. They each have an electric motor and function similarly. The electric window motor can be serviced separately; however they do not fail that often. You will need to swap the electric motor over to the new window regulator you are replacing. The electric motor can be installed in any position as it does not have a mechanical stop. Do not worry about the installation orientation when reinstalling. When replacing a window regulator, it is important to inspect the window guide and seal. The seal can wear and this increases friction on the window when going up and down, which stresses the window regulator. This can lead to premature wear of your window regulator and repeat failures. If needed, replace this component also.

Disconnect window motor electrical connector by squeezing release tabs and pulling off.

Then, using a flathead screwdriver, push window glass retaining tab toward door to release glass.

Then, using a flathead screwdriver, push window glass retaining tab toward door to release glass. (green arrow) When you push the tab to release, pull up on the glass at the same time to disengage. Once both retaining tabs are released, you can remove the window glass from door.

Pull door glass out of door rear corner first, moving it up and sliding it out of door.

Pull door glass out of door rear corner first, moving it up and sliding it out of door. Store door glass in a safe place. On older 3 Series models you could leave the glass in the door. With E90s that is not the case. The top of the window regulator hits the glass when you try to remove it.

Unclip window regulator cable from clip inside door.

Remove three T30 Torx window motor fasteners (green arrows) then pull straight up to remove from window regulator.

Install window regulator into door front side of regulator first, then install regulator fasteners.
Figure 10

Install window regulator into door front side of regulator first, then install regulator fasteners. When you tighten regulator fasteners, try to align it in the same position it was before. The mounting holes are slotted to allow for adjustment. Returning it to the original position will make adjusting (if needed) much easier. (green arrow) Reattach regulator cable into mount as it was before. Slide window glass, front edge first, into door cavity. Then push down on window glass to engage clips. Remaining installation steps are reverse of removing. Properly route wiring harness as they were before and be sure vapor barrier is properly sealed. You may have to align and adjust the window glass when replacing a regulator, if so, I suggest picking up a repair manual as there are many specific steps involved in doing so. Initializing Power Windows When the vehicle battery is disconnected or power window components have been replaced, you have to initialize the power windows. A sign that you may need to initialize the window is your one touch window feature is not working as expected. Use the following steps to initialize your power windows. Close window: Hold window switch until window glass reaches top of travel. Open window: Hold window switch until window glass reaches bottom of travel. Activate one touch operation to close window. Once window closes, confirm that one touch operation works in both directions of window glass travel. If so initialization is complete. If not, repeat steps.

Danno Comments: Recently bought & installed new regulator & motor assymbly. Initially window only ewnt up 1/2 way, then by accident I guess I was able to initialize & all worked okay for a day, then dropped down 1/4 inch - removed door panel & tried operation but only ent full down & clicks to go up.   Followup from the Pelican Staff: The regulator may be defective. I don;t see a reason for it to drop down and not return especially after a successful initialization. - Nick at Pelican Parts

You have left the step out of unbolting the nuts holding the securing tabs of the window this instructional, this caused me to break the window. I am not impressed by this.

TonyS Comments: I have had my rear window motors replaced. When rolling the window all the way up, it will automatically roll back down, so I have to very carefully roll up window until just before fully up to keep it up. I understand that there is a programming step to fix this as it is a part of the safety of the window but I'm unable to locate how to fix this. Do you know steps to fix this issue after rear window motor replacement?
