Complementary Modification:

Replace shift knob and parking brake boot

The shift boot can dry rot and wear out over time, leaving a less than desirable interior appearance. Replacing the shift boot on your vehicle is quite easy and can be done in a short amount of time. It's also a great way to freshen up the look of your E90. Make it even better by replacing the parking brake boot and shift knob with an upgraded version while you are at it.

In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with removing the shift boot on manual and automatic transmission models.

Automatic transmission shift boot:
Remove shift knob by pulling straight up and off shift lever.
Figure 1

Remove shift knob by pulling straight up and off shift lever. The knob can be on quite tight and may need a lot of force to remove it. I found if you slightly twist the knob back and forth while pulling up, it will come off easier. With that said, be careful because the plastic rod can break when knob is removed. Pull it up using a well controlled force.

Grab shift boot at rear and pull up and out of shift indicator bezel.

Grab shift boot at rear and pull up and out of shift indicator bezel. If there has been a drink spill (ex. coffee spilled) the shift boot may stick in bezel. You can clean the shift boot surrounding area before removing using a tooth pick. This will remove most of the debris and allow boot to be pulled out easily. If you need to remove the shift indicator bezel use the next steps, if not you can skip them.

I like to grab the rear edge of the shift indicator bezel and pull up.

I like to grab the rear edge of the shift indicator bezel and pull up. If there is debris between the bezel and center console, it may give you a hard time. For example, spilled coffee makes it stick in place quite well. You can use the tooth pick cleaning tip here too.

Next, lift shift indicator up and disconnect electrical connectors by pulling apart.

Next, lift shift indicator up and disconnect electrical connectors by pulling apart. (green arrows) When you pull connectors off, be sure to pull straight away as to not damage opposite side of connector. Install new shift boot to bezel and reverse removal instructions for remainder of installation. Firmly press shift knob back onto shift lever.

Manual transmission shift boot:
Grab shift boot at rear and pull up and out of center console trim.
