Plastic prying tool, socket set (8mm, 18mm, T25 Torx)

Parts Required:

Bumper mounting brackets

Hot Tip:

Have a friend nearby to help lifting bumper on and off.

Performance Gain:

Store bumper in safe place once removed

Complementary Modification:

Install aftermarket bumper cover

The rear bumper is quick and easy to remove. A few fasteners and two clips and you can slide it off. The mounting brackets that bolt to the body can break from impact or improper installation. In this article, I will go over removing the rear bumper as well as replacing the mounting brackets. Have a friend over to help slide the bumper on and off easier.

Remove rear fender mounted tail lights. See our tech article on tail light replacing.

Working in rear of fender well, remove three 8mm fasteners from wheel well liner.

Peel back wheel well liner and wedge it behind tire to hold it out of your way.

Working inside rear wheel well at fender and bumper connection, remove 8mm fastener.

Working at bottom of rear bumper, remove eleven 8mm fasteners.

Using a small flat blade screwdriver, lever off bumper trim pieces.

Grab corner of bumper cover and unclip from mounting bracket.

Grab corner of bumper cover and unclip from mounting bracket. There are five clips (green arrows) on the bumper support holding the bumper on. Lift up and pull away from body to disconnect. The bumper cover is fragile and the hooks for the clips can tear if not properly disengaged. If you have one that won't release, unclip it by pressing down using a plastic prying tool. Be careful not to scratch vehicle paint. You can use masking tape to protect paint in area in which you have to lever clip. Left side shown, repeat step for right side.

Once the corner of the bumper is release, use a plastic prying tool and release rear of bumper from mounting bracket.

Then with help from a friend, slide bumper off vehicle.

If rear bumper impact absorber needs to be replaced, remove three 18mm bumper impact absorber fasteners (green arrows).

When installing bumper, slide bumper slots onto bumper mounting bracket on body. Once bumper corners are installed correctly, install bumper fasteners and check alignment with body. Install fasteners and tighten.

  Followup from the Pelican Staff: We don't currently have that tech article. If we get a chance to perform the procedure, we will be sure to document it.

I would grab a repair manual. It will have the procedure, special tools and torque specs.
