Troubleshooting Electrical
Problems on Your BMW

Difficulty Level: 4
Difficulty scale: Adding air to your tires is level one
Rebuilding a BMW Motor is level ten

This article is one in a series that have been released in conjunction with Wayne's new book, 101 Performance Projects for Your BMW 3 Series. The book contains 272 pages of full color projects detailing everything from performance mods to timing the camshafts. With more than 650+ full-color glossy photos accompanying extensive step-by-step procedures, this book is required reading in any 3 Series owner's collection. The book was released in August 2006, and is available for ordering now. See The Official Book Website for more details.

One of the most annoying problems with older cars can be an intermittent electrical problem. Example: A dashboard light goes on when you hit the brake, but only when the rear defogger is on; or the radio only works when you are in reverse. As bizarre as it sounds, electrical problems like these have become more and more common as cars have become increasingly complex. Unfortunately, they can be quite difficult to fix.

What typically goes wrong with the wiring on these cars? Several things can happen. First and foremost, every time the car is sold, there is a big chance the new owner will do some modification to the wiring that only he or she will know about. Installing a new stereo, European headlamps, a radar detector, or—worst of all, an aftermarket alarm system—can seriously mess up your wiring configuration if it’s not performed correctly. You’re left holding the mess, armed with only a few sporadic clues as to what is causing the problem. Troubleshooting electrical problems is a tough chore and one most automotive repair shops will not perform without telling you they charge an $80-an-hour diagnostic fee.

This project will give you some tips for troubleshooting your electrical system, but it’s not meant to be a step-by-step guide for fixing all of your problems. That would take almost as many pages as are contained in this book!

The first step in troubleshooting is to make sure you are armed with all the latest and greatest information available for your car. Obviously, the most important item you need is a copy of the electrical diagrams for your model year. At the time of this writing, these diagrams are only available from a few sources. BMW has published books with extensive electrical diagrams in the past, but these can be difficult to find. Bentley Publishers prints manuals for most BMW 3 Series cars with summarized electrical diagrams in the back; these are available at PelicanParts.com. They are definitely a good starting point for troubleshooting.

One of the most persistent of these nagging problems is a continuous drain on the battery. Say you leave the car sitting for a week or two, and when you come back, you find the battery completely drained. This means that something is on inside the car, bleeding the battery of power. Start your troubleshooting process by disconnecting your battery ground (see Project 84) and connecting an ammeter between the battery negative and the chassis. The ammeter will show the amount of current that your electrical system is draining from the battery. When you hook the meter up, it will most likely show that there is some small current flowing through the system. Warning: Don’t start the car or turn on any electrical accessories, because this might blow up your meter.

First, disconnect the trunk (E36) and engine compartment (E30) light before beginning any testing. Now, move to the fuse box in the front engine compartment, and start removing fuses. Carefully watch the ammeter to see if the current drops to zero when a particular fuse is pulled. If it does, you have successfully isolated the problematic electrical circuit. You are more than halfway to solving your problem. Look at the electrical diagrams, and see if you can tell what components are located on that circuit. Try disconnecting each one while watching the ammeter, and you should find the culprit. If pulling fuses doesn’t reveal anything, however, try pulling out the various relays. Sometimes a relay will be powered on, but the device it controls will be disconnected. This may also lead to a gradual battery drain.

Another common electrical problem is the device that just won’t work. If you look carefully at the electrical diagrams, you will notice that there are actually six points of failure for most electrical devices. For lack of a better example, we’ll use a horn to explain and demonstrate the electrical troubleshooting process.

Starting from the rear of the electrical chain, the first point to be concerned about is the actual device itself. You can start the troubleshooting process by testing the horn. Unplug it, and apply 12 volts DC to the horn to see if it will make a sound. It if doesn’t, then you have a problem with your horn.

While the horn is unplugged, another excellent test to perform is to check the electricity in the wires leading to the horn. If you press the horn button on the steering wheel and there is no power going to the wires that power the horn, then the problem lies somewhere else.

The next spot to check would be the relay for the horn. Consult the electrical diagrams to determine which one is the correct relay. When the horn button is pressed, the relay should make a slight clicking noise, on and off. Swapping out relays with one that is known to work is a good method of checking the proper operation of the relay as well.

If the relay checks out, you want to make sure that the fuse is still good. Identify the proper fuse that powers the horn circuit, and make sure it has not blown. Also, keep in mind that the spade-type fuses that BMW uses are sometimes affected by corrosion building up on the terminals. Make sure the fuses are clean and securely seated. If necessary, check the continuity across the two points that hold and mount the fuse.

Many electrical components on the car are also switched through the ignition, enabling them to be turned on and off when you start your car. If a device such as a window motor doesn’t work, along with a host of other equipment, you might have a faulty ignition switch. One clear symptom of this can be seen when the dashboard lights and other equipment turn on and off as you jiggle the key back and forth. Then the switch for the device itself may be faulty. In the case of the horn, the switch is mounted in the center of the steering wheel. Remove the wheel, and check the switch with a continuity tester to make sure it is working properly.

Finally, if all the other tests fail to locate the problem, the wiring itself may be at fault. Especially on older cars, the connecting wires tend to become brittle and sometimes break, even if the outer insulation is intact (see Photo 2). Using a continuity tester, check each of the wires in the harness that powers the blower motor to see if any have lost continuity.

If none of these steps succeed in helping you pinpoint the problem, then you may have made a mistake somewhere along the line—or there might be a short circuit hiding somewhere in the switch or the wiring of the car. In that case, you’ll need to continue with more painstaking tests using a continuity tester in order to locate the source of the problem once and for all.

Figure 1
The fusebox is at the heart of your BMW’s electrical system. Located on the rear, left side of the engine compartment, the relays and fuses inside are sometimes vulnerable to corrosion and failure. Typically, when I encounter an odd electrical problem, I check the fuses and the relays first, since they are the easiest and cheapest solution to annoying electrical gremlins.
Figure
Figure 2
Some cars have wiring issues that show up as strange electrical problems. One prime example of this is the faulty trunk wiring on the E36 3 Series. If your BMW’s alarm system repeatedly refuses to arm the car—instead, giving you the signal that a door is open or ajar—there may be a problem with your trunk wiring. Open the truck, and peel back the black insulation that connects the car to the trunk lid. As shown in the main image, repeatedly opening and closing the trunk makes the wires and insulation brittle and causes them to break. Solder the two broken wires together, and cover any missing insulation with tape, as shown in the photo inset.

kcComments: I have a 94 bmw 318is, i bought this car from someone who has an aftermarket radio. it's been working fine til today when i was listening to my iPod, and i turned on the AC while the key is turned to 1? or whenever you can use the radio while the engine isn't running. I was in the passenger seat and took out the glovebox light bc i thought it was a bit dim, so I took the bulb out and put in a new one from when i had to change the dome light. it lit up but i noticed it was the same brightness so i took it out. so I'm exchanging bulbs back and forth with extra ones i had and some didn't work, etc. then i decided to just put the old bulb back on and then it happened. my iPod stopped playing but technically the radio turned off but my iPod is still playing and the glovebox light won't turn on. I check everything and everything works. the car engine turns on etc. but just those 2 things stopped working. idk what to do.

PismireComments: I have a 2002 330i 5sp w/ sport/premium pkgs. When I arm the car, all lights dim and turn off except the left license plate bulb. It won't shut off. If I open the trunk, it remains on. If I turn on my headlights, both the left and right license plate bulbs turn on brighter. If I shut my headlights off, the left plate bulg remains on. No matter what I do, this happens. This was not happening the evening before. Any ideas?

Jordan 05 BMWComments: Nick - Thanks for the quick response. I moved the AC on and off with no change to the AUX fan . Unconnected and reconnected the 2 connections on the side of the fan assembly, still no change. Battery light is on as this was a new battery that I drove on to get home- 5 miles. When I got home the fan was off and not running continuous with the ignition off and the battery still connected. Hearing something about a radio code that talks to the ECU that might need to be entered?

Jordan 05 BMWComments: Have a 2005 325i e46 with a bad alternator. Put a new battery in the car to get me home and it has been sitting with the neg lead to that battery disconnected for a week. Changed the alternator today and when I reconnected the neg lead the AUX fan came on high speed and does not turn off unless you remove the neg lead. Car has not run in a week so the motor was cold. Any suggestions? Did I lose programming to the ECU?

LuComments: Hi, I bought a 2000 BMW 328i a couple of years ago. The dashboard always has shown that a tail light and the two low beam headlamps are not working but they are fine; few months later, the airbag indicator started to be on all the time. Later, the central locking and the hazard warning buttons stop working at the same time. Now, the service interval can’t be reset after oil change; and the clock can’t be reset… Besides all this is that the low beam headlights flash at random all the time and I need to fix asap. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
April 20, 2014
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would assume these are all different problems. Over time, more faults or items can fail, creating what can seem like related items, especially when ignored. I would think the light out issue is due to a problem with a light socket or the LCM. Central locking can be an issue with the GEM. The maintenance issue and clock, could be problems with the cluster. I would start by checking the vehicle for fault codes. If multiple systems are not working properly, fault codes will be set. This will be your best bet when diagnosing.

T_devil22Comments: I have 2002 735li. 6 weeks ago, radio started having trouble holding reception, the interior dash lights would dim if you turned parkers or headlights on, door locks would need remote pressed 2 or 3 times before unlocking, handbrake stopped working and A/c fan speed slowed. After a few days, driving along, the car stalled and wouldn't restart. Had it towed to a mechanic, he found no power to the fuel pump and the computer inside the right hand centre pillar was hot. However he fixed the problem by unplugging and replugging electrical plugs and resetting codes and the car started and he said all should be fine. 6 weeks later 2 days ago driving along the car stalled on the highway and again had to be towed home.Just prior to it stalling, the car again experienced all the same symptoms. Any suggestions on my problem please.

ProntopacComments: I have a 2005 Z4 3.0i. On occasion, the in-dash time display, outside temp, etc will suddenly reset to zero. The GPS/Computer display will reset and bump up then down, the steering wheel warning light will briefly turn on and the power steering will briefly go off then return. Within a moment, the car gets back to normal, but I have to reset the time and date, etc indicators.

Sometimes it randomly occurs, sometimes it will happen when I have to make a sudden hard turn at parking lot speeds. I'm suspecting the ignition key assembly is the problem as a moment ago I turned off the car and all the electrical components when dead. First time that happened. I had to remove the neg. terminal cable for a few minutes to reset the system.
The car runs fine otherwise and seems to be a problem at low speeds when maneuvering, but over time the problem is getting worse. Note: I have not had to replace a fuse.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: At first it sounded like you were describing a failing starter motor. Then you mentioned it doesn't turn? hibziComments: I have a 2001 325i Estate and the fan is not engaging. The radiator was shot and the original fan did not work with a live feed, so I changed them both. I have now changed the coolant temperature sensor in the bottom hose, but still not working. The fan does not come on when the air con is put on, and does not come on as the engine gets hot.

Libryum1Comments: Hi! I recently been having electrical problems with my 2002 BMW 525i. The steering wheel controls buttons and radio work on and off at times. The radio will just power off and sometimes the steering wheel will move up and down too. And then today I received a "transmission failsafe programming" error but it went away after I restarted the car and have not seen again. The other electrical problems occur about once or twice a day. I've read that it could be the ignition switch. Does anyone know what could be the cause of all these weird electrical problems? Is it the ignition switch or something else? Thank you for your help and insight.

CDeaF Comments: Hi all, I just bought a 1994 BMW 325is.
I new that it had some issues when I bought it, I installed new brakes all around and an ignition cylinder, it has driver side window issues, the window when all the way up goes 1/4inch to far so when the door is open it end up hitting the outside of the car and is likely to break. The outside driver side door handle doesn't work but the inside does. The whole cluster has many issues warning lights come on randomly and the gauge needles when driving suddenly go way up then drop Bacall to 0 then pop back to normal. The trunk doesn't lock so anyone can just pull it open, the gas gauge is constantly on E. I see that there are 3 wires that have been cut inside driver side doo; they are colored brown and orange, brown and orange. They once connected to an input by the driver side door switch to another input behind the outside door handle inside the door. Also the won't blow heat when just sitting and idling but will once I start driving.
I know the previous owner replaced a dead battery last year. So I wonder if this is all computer related? ANY HELP WILL BE MUCH APRECIATED! Thanks this is driving me crazy.

PeterComments: While driving, my turn signal mostly left one and the high beams go on without me touching anything. Dangerous. I lose all control of the headlights also. Even when I shut the car off, sometimes the parking lights will just stay on until I start and stop the car a few times.
Seems to happen more when its wet out, but it also happens after 4 days of bone dry weather.
I also had an after market security systempython put in and radar detector wired directly and a satellite radio wired directly and angel eyes put in.
But I have not had any problems for 2 years even with all that stuff put in the car until recently. Its dangerous to drive now with blinkers going on whenever they decided they want to go on. What do you think?
Thank you for any help.

BMW528 MikeComments: Just got a 1999 528I had the car a week and all ran great and went to start today and it wouldn't turn over...it cranked but wouldn't start.
I checked the fuel pump and all good.. Ended up taking it back to the shop I purchased it from and it told me it was the EWS and it needed to be replaced.so a week later I go into the shop to see how the repair is going and they said they had the new EWS and just started working on it today... I get a call about 2 hours later and i am told that I need to order another EWS from the BMW Dealer because theirs would not program to the car and my old one was bad.
I am confused on how they would expect just a random EWS to work when they are VIN Specific.

So I order a new key and EWS and give it to the Shop
A few hours later he calls and says it started but every time they turned the car off they had to ReProgram the EWS again... Has anybody ever seen this happen or have any suggestions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Followup from the Pelican Staff: The multiple reprogramming is odd. However, the new EWS will have to be programmed to mate with the DME. That step is required. If the DME is faulty, it could also be losing the EWS code, creating the need for a reprogram. - Nick at Pelican Parts

ShareAllComments: Hello. I was just told why my battery and alternator are being drained? Could you possibly confirm or deny this?
I have a 1988 735i. I've had the battery replaced twice, re-charge twice, finally got a new alternator and was running fine. In the cold nights, I would plug into a 'battery conditioner". still all good. One weekend I was ill and never ran or plugged in the condtioner. Car would not start. Ever since then, it's not fully charging overnight with the conditioner and have had to get jumps after the work day. A co-worker just told me the AirBag Light is draining my battery. Also askked if there was noise like something running after I turn off the ignition. Does this sound plausible? Thank you!! if so, is this something any mechanic can dis-connect?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You may have a parasitic draw. Once you confirm there is a draw. You will have to isolate the circuit with the draw. Then determine which components on that circuit is causing the draw You can isolate by removing fuses. be sure to have all the latches on the doors and hood closed (pin switches) so the vehicle will sleep during testing. If it wakes up, you will have to wait until it goes to sleep again.

JoshwComments: Hello nick,
I have a 94 325is I recently bought new tail lights and headlights for. All my lights worked properly before I began installing anything. I started with passenger taillight and everything worked great. I then went to the front passenger headlight. I installed it the way the last similar halo headlights were.everything seamed to work fine. Except the parking/running lights or corner light was very bright. When I installed the driver head light the running light did not stay illuminated and driver taillight went completely out. And the driver side halos only came on with the blinker. I wired both sides exactly the same. What happened? I did the checks, fuses trunk lid wiring, etc...

NateComments: Hi - I have a 2001 x5 and have recently replaced the alternator. Since then I have seen a couple different issues. One is the temperature gauge is intermittently shows all the way hot. Also a couple times I've unlocked the car and when I open the door the flashers are on an the interior lights are all on and don't shut off once I shut the door. A couple times this has happened and when i turn them off and park the car after i get wherever - when i try to start it later on the battery is dead. The tech said they did not see any battery drain and if he didn't actually see it happening they could not troubleshoot. In reference to the temp gauge and a couple other codes they recently replaced some of the vacuum lines, 02 sensor, differential intake air control valve last one related to a rough idle and shutting off car at low speeds.

Am I really overheating? Are the emergency flashers/interior lights possibly connected to the alarm system? Would be see that on the battery drain testing? What can I do!? Thinking about selling it as these repairs have cost over a grand.

Ps also replaced the driver side locking mechanism.

I have, in the past, had success with pushing the gas pedal to the floor and cranking until it turned over. This would take several seconds. Today, that didn't work. MY wife and I own a 2011 BMW 328i sedan with 12,000mi on it.
In mid Nov.2013 the main blower started sporadically coming on at a very low level, and would not respond to being manually shut off. Our local BMW dealer replaced the blower motor final stage, and the problem went away until late December, when the same symptoms returned. We took the car back to our BMW dealer, who now has said that after replacing the blower controls, ANOTHER final stage and resetting the on-board computer, the car is functioning normally and they will do no more, EVEN though the blower still remains on. This makes no sense to us. Any thoughts, please? Not happy with dealership where we bought the car. Thanks, Patrick

Even with headlights on, the voltage at the jump terminal under the hood is a steady 14.03 volts at idle while the battery light is on. After a couple of restarts the light does not stay on after starting and operation is normal for the next few weeks.
The only code stored is "281D BSD generator: signal". I gather this means the the DME is flagging bad alternator voltage even though the charging system seems to be perfectly operational.
So what is the real problem here? Is there a way to diagnose without throwing some very expensive parts at the car?

It then appears to remain lit, but only dimmly and the brightness seems to increase or decrease with the engine if that makes sense. The next morning my husband tested the alternator with a meter said the output is okay. Started it up, no charging indicator light. After my first stop the light came on again dimmly staying on for the remainder of the errands. Moments later I get a check control message about the break circuit to check the owners manual - apparently I now have no break lights.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: Finding a shorted or broken wire inside a whole-looking insulation harness is tedious and time-consuming work. The sparks (if that is what they are) could lead to a fire under the dashboard, so you need to investigate and fix this. Then when I stepped on the gas, the lights got brighter and when I let off the gas the lights got dimmer. The brights, fog lights and brake lights did not work at all. I replaced the alternator and that works fine, and the lights no longer get brighter or dimmer but the brake lights, fog lights and bright lights are still not working. When I turn on the high beams, the low beams nothing changes the low beams stay on. I checked the fuses and swapped them for new ones with no luck. I think there was an electrical blink when the alternator broke.

- The dashboard indicator arrows sometimes keep flashing even when i've finished indicating. and sometimes the arrows don't illuminate at all

- The stereo, air con and computer screens ocassionally go dark

- i-pod connection stops working and reverts back to the radio

- Steering wheel controls don't work on occassions

Thats all I can think of at the moment however no doubt they'll be new ones soon. Do you think there might just be one fault thats causing all the problems?!
December 2, 2013

November 18, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I have never heard of removing a chip to bypass the theft. If this chip exists, it would be inside the radio, not a separate component. A wiring diagram won't help with that.

ReneComments: Greetings all and thanks for all the good work you do with all of us BMW enthusiasts... I an issue that I'm hoping you can chime in on and lead me in the right direction as far as what to troubleshoot. I have a 97 M3 and when I purchased it the PO had installed Depo headlights with 55w HID's. Not long ago a headlight went out and the first thing I went for was to replace the actual bulb. when that did nothing I replaced the HID ballast and when that didnt work I was stumped. So I got a voltage meter and checked the actual plug from the car that plugs into the ballast and there was no power going to it so thats dead. I checked the fuses and even though they were good I replaced them and still nothing. The other headlight works perfectly fine and there is no other electrical issue that I know of happening with the car right now. Any ideas what direction to go in? Do you carry anything that I should be looking into that would help with this? Thanks for your time!

Followup from the Pelican Staff: The power supply for the light comes from the lamp control module, if you have no power I would check at the connector of the LCM if there is power there you have a broken wire, if there is not you have to replace the module.

TimboComments: I drive a 2004 BMW Z4 2.5L. I started getting static on the radio when I pressed on the brakes. This proceeded to expand to my horn that would blow as I braked and turned the car. To stop from being embarrassed every time I would come to a stop or turn, I pulled the fuse that controlled the horn. Now I am getting a clicking noise by the fuse box behind the glovebox every time I brake or when I touch the steering wheel. How do I trace the wiring of the horn to see where it is shorting out?
October 16, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It sounds like you have a shorted wire under the dash. I would start looking at the base of the steering column, where the brake light switch and column wires are. The static on the radio is not related. it is going to be interference from the third brake light. Check the ground wire for the third brake light, make sure all connections are good.

Smillanejr Comments: Greetings! I have a 1993 BMW 325is. The car is old but sat around unused in a garage for about 10 years so it only has about 110,000 miles on it. I have 2 major problems with it and could really use some help. First off my gauges don't seem to always work. They always work in the morning when I head to school and sometimes will work once more again but only if its cold outside. It will work late at night too but again only if its cold. My 2nd issue is with the break lights. Recently message appeared saying break light circuit failure so I changed the bulbs but the message still appeared and my break lights still did not work. I know these cars are notorious for having faulty wirings atleast from what I hear but I was wondering if you could help me out! Any info in these problems would be helpful thanks so much!
October 9, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would check the brake light switch under the dash, I would also take a look the wires that supply power and ground to the cluster, It sounds like you might have a short in the dash that you are going to have to hunt down.

maraComments: I have a 2004 x5 the problem is that when my son drives it to the airport and it sits for a couple of days, it won't start when he gets back. We changed the battery and we have had a mechanic look it over lightly. What could be the problem? Alas, my tire sensor is on all the time, even when the exact amount of tire pressure is in each tire. Any clue? The car is old with a lot of miles but I was hoping to get some more use out of it without dumping so much more money into it. I appreciate any and all help.
October 2, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If the battery is going dead after a couple of days you are going to have a draw on the system while the car is sleeping. You have to use an amp meter to measure the draw and help find the faulty component, I would also scan the complete vehicle with a factory scan tool to check for faults related to the TPM, if the system will not initialize.

when I asked what destroys the junction box, i am told its water... my car is an 2011 model. how can water be around the junction box? please advice on what can destroy junction box so i may prevent future damage. thanks
September 29, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The junction box is located on the inside on the firewall, usually water will come in at the base of the windshield and through the fresh air intake for the inside of the car.

September 29, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It could be a faulty key, try using the other key if you have it, it could also be a problem with the central locking system, you need to check the fault memory to check that system.

September 25, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It sounds like there might be a couple of issues with some of the control modules in the car, the best way to check it out is to scan the complete vehicle with the factory scan tool and see what faults are stored. This will give you a place to start.

Bowers86Comments: Hi, i recently bought a 2005 3.0i BMW X5 auto, recent oil change done and transmission fluid done two days ago, the car has been running lovely, but a couple weeks ago i noticed a slight rattling sound but when i revved the engine it disappeared, coming an going but its still there. When i lifted the bonnet it sounded more like air leaking.
Today then i was driving up to a set of lights stopped and put into Nuetral, after about three seconds it made a stiff judder and then engine went from running smoothe to running really un smooth as if it was missing a cylinder.
It also lost allot of power, but no light, engine management nothing, but its so not right, i'm suspecting gasket, air intake, or coil problem but really not sure i really need some guidance as im in the UAE and BMW cost a fortune just to diagnose.
September 24, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Start by checking the intake air boots for cracks and leaks, Also check the ignition system, make sure it is functioning correctly, check the spark plugs, and for any other vacuum leaks. Checking the fault memory in the DME will also help give you a place to start.

Please help thanks
September 24, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If the wire that you connected to the CD player was a ground wire, it should not have caused any problems. Start by disconnecting the CD player and checking for why the car won't start. Check for fuel pressure and spark, see what is missing and go from there.

cruziComments: Hi,
I Have a problem with no brake lights on a 2000 316i compact, I have checked fuse 36 in the fuse box and the bulbs are good.all other lights ok I haven't tried the brake light switch yet I see from an earlier post it interrupts the positive feed to the bulb. I have recently put in a bolt in a coupling in the exhaust under the centre of the car, I wouldn't think this is related. any help appreciated.
September 23, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: There should be two outputs from the brake light switch, one to the DME and one to the Lamp control unit, if there is a signal coming out of the switch but no power going to the bulbs check the lamp control unit, it is built into the light switch.

steveComments: Hello, I have a 1991 318i convertable and i hooked my battery up backwards so the positive was to the begative and negative to positive on accident. It fried my alternator and the battery light stays on. Ive replaced the alternator and battery but the battery light is still on. so i was wondering what else could be the problem? My radio and blower do not work either but i heard that if the battery light is on then they wont work.
September 21, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The cluster itself could be faulty, as well as the blower resistor, and the radio. Check for power and ground at the effected parts, if it is there you are going to have to start replacing parts.

Something is pulling the battery down at night, can someone suggest a few common problems or how I go about checking the various systems one at a time. Will be gratefull for any assistance at all.
Thanking you kindly. Wayne. 2003 320d e46.
September 20, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Common causes could be the alternator, final stage, electric fan, glove box light switch. Use a amp meter and check for the draw at the battery, start pulling fuses with the car off on at a time until the draw is gone, then inspect everything on that circuit.

ZachComments: I have a Bmw 316i 1998 My speedometer light went out along with my cigarette lighter wont work. Changed the fuses on them and nothing... The weird noise when you leave the lights on with the key out stop working too. Not sure if theyre all tied together or not. Maybe it was a short? Thanks
September 18, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The speedometer could just be a bulb, remove the cluster and check the bulbs. The lighter and the gong could be related, if the fuses for the lighter are good, remove the lighter and check for power and ground at the connector at the back and trace back whatever is missing.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Start by checking the battery cable connections and the fuses in the trunk by the battery. Sounds liKe you have a electrical problem, pick one thing that is not working and trace the fault.

RealDeahlComments: I have a 2000 323 ci. The brake lamp lights both come on when car is started and the brake lights all three are on without pressing the brake pedal. The radio will not come on either. Sometimes the traction control light and sometimes the airbag light come on as well. Usually after driving for a few miles the dash lights return to normal, the brake lights go out and function normally and the radio comes on. The interior light by the review mirror flickers on and off prior to normal operations. We have replaced the brake pedal switch and the battery trying to fix the problem. Any suggestions? No mods to car.
September 17, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It sounds like you have an electrical problem, I would start by looking at the fuses and battery cable connections in the rear of the car. Pick one circuit that is not working, like the radio, see what's missing when it is not working. Power, ground and so on. Trace what ever is missing, and you will probably find the reason for all your faults.

JACKComments: Good day, I have a 1998 318I, the problem is my left brake lights is out just the left one and my dashboard lights are out as well. I checked the fuse, it seems to be good, I changed the bulb even though the bulb also looked good. I recently had a radio installed. I don't recall if the dashboard lights went out around the same time, but the brake lights has been out maybe a week before. Any suggestions?
September 17, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: There is a check control module that could be faulty, the dash light bulbs could also be burned out. Remove the cluster to check the bulbs in it, and check for an output signal to the brake light bulb from the check control module, it is behind the cluster down and to the left.

ElvisBMWx5Comments: PLEASE HELP. 2002 X5 4.4 It all started with the passeger tail light flickering, I noticed corrosion on the contacts and replaced the tail light assembly, worked great. But, the corrosionwater had to come from some where but it was working so I went on my merry way. Literally days later, the trunk lid started randomly popping open and a Licensen Plate bulb is out; after some blog reading, I determined it was the cable bundle at the gromett going into the trunk. After inspection of the wires I did not find any smoking gun and the grometts looked and felt tight; a few days later when I approached the car after work I noticed it was all jacked up from the rear suspension leveling system and the instrument cluster for the vent sys was blank. At home I found a couple blown fusesauto level, AC, and Passenger airbag, AC fuse is the only one that keeps blowing but all the symptoms remain. Also when I drive the right passenger window will slowly go down and the wipers will wipe really slow on their ownweird WTF is happening to this car? I went from everything working great to acting a muck. I welcome anyones thoughts. Altenator? sending junk voltage/current?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You have water getting into the back of your car, this can cause many different problems. You are going to have to find where the water is coming from and stop it and then repair all the damage that it caused. This can be a lot of work.

September 15, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sound s like the switch for the BC/turn signals might be faults or you could have a couple of wires pinched together in the steering column. I would remove the lower cover to the column and look for a damaged wire.

bobjunyeaComments: Just bought a used 2001 BMX X5 4.4 and have the following issues: The left low beam is out but comes on just for a second when I start the engine. Replaced the bulb with no success. Also the navigation system has never fully comes on but flickers about every 20 seconds.
September 11, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: If the bulb is ok, there could be a problem with the lamp control module, and you could have a problem with the nav screen or the nav unit itself, I would grab a repair manual. It will list the special tools and each step of the procedure to test the systems.

RicardoComments: Hello, I have a 01 BMW 530I that has been giving me problems with the radio, everything works on the radio but there is no sound only a constant click in the left hand tweeters. if I press any key in the radio or CD player it click every time, I have replaced the Amp twice but it keep doing the same. there is the clicking sound only in the tweeters but nothing else, also there is a DSC light on that won't go away even when I press the on/off bottom, also windshield wiper motor and washer pump do not work. don't know if all this could be related. I have check all the fuses and changed the wiper relay bot still doesn't work, already ordered a new wiper motor. thank you in advance.
September 10, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like the radio might be faulty, you should also check the speakers to make sure they are not torn. The DSC system has a fault, you are going to have to check for fault codes, and check the switch for the wipers it could be faulty.

Skyry3Comments: Hello,

I hope this finds one of you, as I know this is an old post. I have a 2006 650i cabriolet and I've been experiencing an issue regarding one of the rear parking lamps. I left the house last night and saw that the left rear parking lamp was on; it wasn't on when I parked the car earlier. I noticed something else. When inserting the key into the ignition, the steering wheel lowered into the standard driving position, as normal. I started the car and pushed a different memory setting to change the seat and steering wheel position. The seats adjusted to the proper setting, but the steering wheel didn't set into its proper place. I moved it with the control on the side and it still works, yet the memory function on it wasn't settting it like it always had. The thing is, when I inserted the key, the Now I know that after the car is parked, one can move the turn signal stalk up or down to illuminate either rear parking lamp to act as a marker. However, I didn't engage this function. Please help guide me down the right path toward addressing this issue. Gratitude, -Ryan

Then - flashing satnav screen, no control over radio on/of, indicators not working, parking sensors stay bleeping without the ignition being on, reversing lights stay on with no ignition on. Remove FSU all OK. Buy another FSU again, OK for 1 day and same things keep happening. Took car to garage no serous fault codes so they reinserted the same FSU I just took out - all OK. Took car home next day same things again - I think the car is taking on a life of its own !
HELP please.
July 31, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would start by checking the battery cable connection at the battery. Also there is a fuse box under the passenger seat, remove the seat and check the fuse box for water damage. If that gets you no where pick one circuit that is not functioning correctly and trace the fault back to the source. There really is no easy place to start.

540guyComments: 1994 BMW 540i. Battery died with car sitting in driveway. Installed new battery. Car died in driveway again. Battery took full charge, was dead 24hrs later without use. Any suggestions as to what is draining the battery? Clues...back-up lights and windshield washer pump do not work. Also dash lights dim sometimes.
July 30, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The final stage unit, the electric fan, and the alternator, are all possibilities. Start by unplugging them one at a time until there is no drain on the battery. If that doesn't work start pulling fuses one at a time, start with the rear fuse panel, when the draw stops, start looking at the control units on the circuit. You are going to need an amp meter to measure the currant draw while you are doing this. The currant draw should be less than 50mA while the car is asleep.

Also where can I source the remaining length of the trunk wiring harness. Figuring another e36 in a salvage yard...

Thanks!

CharlesComments: Ive been having battery drainage issues on my BMW 530i 2001 and i cant seem to pinpoint the issue. I've replaced the battery, final stage unit, and the ignition switch and none have fixed the problem. all the fuses were checked and all are good. im thinking i might possibly have a short. Is it normal when connecting the negative terminal to the battery to see a small spark?
July 22, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The spark is normal. You are going to have to get an Amp meter and measure the currant draw while the car is sleeping. The car is a sleep after about 16 min, with the doors and hood closed and locked. you can do this by opening the door and closing the latch with a screw driver, If you want the hood open, just pull up on the hood switch button and it will go into service mode. You will know the car is a sleep when the light on the shifter in the center console goes out. After the car is asleep start pulling fuses start in the back of the car, pull them one at a time until the currant draw in less than 30-50mA. Once it is below that start looking at the circuit that the fuse was powering and unplug the control modules on that circuit. It is a long process, some of the fuses you pull will wake the car back up and you will have to wait until it goes back to sleep.

BarryComments: I have a 1995 525i. The windshield wipers were working normally or almost so . . . lately had seemed a little slow. Then after replacing the valve cover gasket did not use pressure washer in engine compartment, the next day the wipers would not work. When you turn the ignition switch to the ON position, the wiper arms jump about 1/2" from the part position, regardless of what position the wiper switch is in. Moving the wiper switch to any position, including wash, sometimes causes the arms to jump maybe 1/4", but that is all. Reading that the wiper motors almost never fail, I went searching for the wiper relays, and eventually found them under the rear seat, drivers side. I am sure they are the right relays because if I remove them the wipers do not jump when I turn key to ON. I swapped them out for identical relays from the fuse and relay box rear the drivers side firewall, but that did not help.
I read about removing the wiper motor assembly and it looks like a nightmare-had thought given the slow operation before it quit that it could be a stuck linkage, and would be able to test the motor.
Not sure how to proceed. Any suggestions? Thanks

I think the problem may have been triggered before the mass air flow was changed, because when a mechanic tried to scan the errors that same problem came up for the very first time, once the mass air flow was changed, the car ran alright for about a week, but I drove it only locally so engine didn't really warm up as much, so difficult to say.

DushComments: Hi,
I have a BMW 318i SE year:2000. I recently changed the Mass Air Flow as the car was idling very rough. Once changed the car ran well for 20 miles, but now a new problem has cropped up. The car is shaking , idle is ok. Also the car won't start once the engine is warm, I went shopping the other day and parked it. On the way it was fine but after finishing shopping when I tried to start it again, it refused to start. It did crank the engine but the revs dropped immediately and it died. I got a local mechanic who checked the fuel pump, but it seemed fine as it worked when the ignition was turned on, but as soon as the car started something would cut off the power to the fuel pump and the engine would turn off. I got it towed home. Once it was parked outside my home, I just turned the ignition on and it just started as normal. This is really strange, yesterday I did the same thing, I turned it on and took it for a drive on the block, all seemed fine except a bit of shaky engine idle was fine, once back home I turned off the engine and tried to start again, but the same problem again it won't start until the engine was completely cooled down.
Please help I'm going mad with this problem.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would advise against using pressurized water in an engine compartment. There are too many electrical components to risk damaging.

Your best bet is to start by disconnecting your battery. Then open up all the covers and lids in your engine compartment, look for water intrusion. If you find any, dry it best as possible. Then reassemble and recheck.- Nick at Pelican Parts

January 7, 2013
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like a lot of electrical problems, which could be one of a number of things. In cases like this, where there are multiple gremlins, you would want to look at a few things that affect major and multiple electrical systems. For example, improperly attached ground straps, maybe a faulty ignition switch, problems with water / rust floating around the fuse box. The hot A/C blowing is probably a mechanical issue and not necessarily an electrical issue (perhaps). - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: If there is no power are the injectors you might have a faulty DME. Check your main relay and make sure that there is no voltage drop across the relay. if that is ok make sure you have 12V at the DME on pin 18 and 35. Also check to make sure you have a ground at the injectors and that the crank sensor is ok. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Then the ac temperature began to fluctuate drastically. Mechanic says it's located under the front bumper and that we'd probably damaged it by parking too close to parking stops and scraping the underside of front bumper. Is this going to be a costly repair?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Check the currant draw on the fuel pump with an amp meter, if it is over 8 amps while the pump is running, either the pump is weak and needs to be replaced, you have a clogged fuel filter, or there is a connection problem in the circuit causing too much resistance.

Sammy Comments: Hello,

I drive a 2001 BMW 530i: I was on the highway when my AC, Radio, and turning signal suddenly started to work intermittently and eventually stopped working alltogether few minutes later. I also noticed later that the passenger side mirror does not turn anymore whenever the car is in reverse. The turn signals work outside the car but not on the cluster display. The AC was blowing hot air even though the cool signal light was on. Checked the fuse and they all appear to be intact.

Please advise.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Is your battery still not connected? Your electrical system will now operate properly without a good battery connection. Try to go through the rear seat and locate the emergency trunk release handle. It should glow in the dark and when you pull it, the trunk latch opens. DaveComments: Update from the 2nd of feb

Car has been back and forth to garage, the problem must be electrical not fuel. The car only momentarily looses power, ie like the ignition is off...the red battery warning light comes on, then goes out as the car restarts, rather dangerous when it happens passing an artic and someone is tailgating you!!!! It has failed completely twice but always restarts after about 5 mins.
There is no fault codes at all, the lights stereo etc still work during this engine cut out period.
The garage cleaned the earth on the engine and refitted it, this worked for a week, a second earth was fitted, again worked for a week.
It does seem as if the car has a bad earth or power to the cpu or ignition...the saga continues, will post when the fault is found and cured.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You will have to check for a parasitic draw. You want no more than 40ma (see thsi web page for specs http://autotechdiagnostics.com /?p=185). Measure the current being drawn from the battery when the vehicle is off. While doing this, you will have to monitor the voltage drop across fuses or pull fuses to isolate the circuit. I would like to disconnect the key-less entry on the trunk. For some reason the car seems to have a gremlin or the key does and the trunk pops open when I have the key in my hand or in my pocket. I just had about $500 worth of stuff taken.
January 10, 2012

Answer: On my BMW keys, the segment nearest the key metal unlocks the car, the bmw centre button locks it, and the segment nearest your hand will pop the boot. In the past, I have sat down with the key in my pocket, in the lounge of my house, 10Metres from the car, and woke the following morning to find all doors and boot unlocked, and all windows fully down. I'd say make a hard cover for the key, so you can't press the buttons.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: This could be the crank or cam sensor. However, I suggest checking what is missing before replacing any parts.
When your engine doesn’t start you’ll want to check the basics. Check spark, fuel injector pulse and pressure fuel, volume and quality. Once you figure out what is missing, it will be easier to diagnose. - Nick at Pelican Parts

We put it in the shop, they said it was the battery, that everything else tested fine. We changed the battery, and it still happens intermittently. We know the battery isn't dead when we have to jump start it cause all the lights are bright and work fine. In fact, when you turn the ignition and it won't start the headlights blink and the ignition clicks. What could this be??

RoyalComments: 2001 X5 3.0~just got it back after 3 weeks at dealers. Initially problem with radio, turn signials inside and dash not working and side windows would not work in reverse. Several things was tried and eventually it was suggested that I replace the LCM. They had to order a replacment twice and it stil would not program. They eventually contacted BMW for instructions to manually program. Yesterday started car at dealer. All was working drove off lot and radio, turn signal and side mirrors have stopped working again. Looking for advice to what could be the real problem. I think it is something electrical. Please advise.
February 1, 2012
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The common part between the mirrors and the turn signals is the light control module or the bus system. I would think that a module is taking down the bus causing these issues.

I would start by checking the vehicle for fault codes. There will be communication codes stored if this is in fact the problem. These codes will guide you to the faulty module.

January 2, 2012
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Well, for the first issue, you should read the codes output by the computer to see what it's trying to tell you. See my article in the tech section on that. For problem #2 - that has to do with a microswitch in the door mechanism - you typically have to replace the mechanism and the problem is fixed. For problem #3, it could be the control unit, or it could be the heater valve, although blowing air on and off sounds like a blower resistor or control unit problem. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

I take the battery to get charged hook it up and still no electrical power at all and also the terminals spark when I hook the battery to the car it never used to do this its like the battery reversed itself .. Could blown ignition switch or blown fusible links cause this.. Also the day before when it worked, I would hit the gas while moving and all of a sudden it the engine would rev up but no acceleration all dash lights come on.then every thing went back to normal it did this 3 times in 5 min of driving before I stopped. Then the next day no power to anything even with charged battery.. I no dash lights is a ignition switch symptom but does that explain the melting jumper cables when the where hook on right.. Plz help thank you
January 2, 2012
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like you have a major short circuit somewhere right near the battery. I've never really heard of this happening, but if you have one of the positive cables grounded accidentally, it will cause major problems. If you have an aftermarket stereo that has a separate cable, it may have grounded itself. I would check all the connections that lead to the positive terminal of the battery. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

There's an internal fuse in the back of your radio that may have also blown.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: The cigarette lighter is on it's own fused circuit, so the fuse should have blown. That said, I believe on your car there may be a fusable link on the battery. My 2006 330i Sedan E90 iDrive stopped today. It went on/off since last night. I hit a few potholes this week, hard ones. I feel like it knocked a wire loose? The CD and Nav DVD won't eject, but keep running. The lights stay on the CD and DVD buttons as well. I went back out to my car after an hour, CD and DVD still on trying to work. Worried this will drain my battery/car out or mess with the electrical system overall. Is it possible for me to reconnect this wire myself? The car ran out of warranty in September, and I am not in the position to spend $300 at BMW to diagnose it! I really just think it's a loose connection. My heated seats work. My heater/ac work. iDrive does not. Thanks so much!

SPARKTICUSComments: According to insurance and state records of emmissions testing, the odometer on my 1989 325i which I bought last June has read the same number for the last five years. Is there an easy fix that would keep me out of the shop? I am afraid I have no other means of keeping track of how much use it gets due to my schedule's sporatic nature. I've been keeping track of the fuel receipts in case there is no other way to estimate mileage with many of my internal computer components having been compromised. There have been other little things like only half of the dashboard lights up when I turn the lowbeams on, and those sometimes will decide they don't want to work, but getting out of the car and a solid closed fisted pounding on the lense seems to do the trick if not instead banging on the hood emblem once or twice has done it as well. I also have a 91 525i but have to write you about it at another time. THANK YOU for all the educational information that has been provided by your site.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: If only recline stopped working and the remainder of the power seat functions work, I do not think it would be a fuse. Probably not related to the washer pump. I would gain access to the washer pump and check for power and ground to the pump when you activate it. If there is power and ground, replace the pump. - Nick at Pelican Parts

him_with_no_brakelightsComments: 330ci 2002 with electrical problems similar to what Jay Tec reported Jan 25 2011. Can you put me in touch with Jay to see if a solution was found please? My 330 when hot exhibits a mind of it's own. Indicators work only when they want, dash indicates blinker working but they don't actually blink outside where it's important, so who know's when I am turning except me! HID headlights go on, dip and reset even when the dash headlight dial is in the off position. I have been told that the rear lights including the brake lights do a dance of there own design also, so I am nervous someone is going to T-Bone my ass one day! I'm pretty reluctant to drive this otherwise amazing vehicle, and can't in good faith sell it!

I tried jump starting and pop starting and the engine wont turn over. when i turn the key the accessories come on but the fuel pump doesnt and the car doesnt even try and turn over. i checked all the wire to the starter an tried touching soleniods with no sucess and even grounded different things out. i checked the fuses and relays and everything seems fine i just put a new battery in and still nothing. there was an after market security device that was removed when i got the car but the wires were still connected since the problem i removed them. If you have any suggestions it would help a lot im running out of ideas thanks

TomComments: I recently purchased a 2006 x5. When I was familiarizing myself with the various aspects of the car I noticed that you could turn on the radio and activate the cigarette lighter with out putting in the ignition key to activate the electrical circuit. I questioned the dealer about this and they said it was on its own circuit directly wired to the battery True or false? I also noticed on my trip home that the front lighter would not take my GPS connector so I resorted to using the rear port.Eventually both failed with a slight pooping sound after starting the vehicle and consequently frying my GPS.

When it runs it runs great but I often find I have a dead battery. It usually happens when the car is shut off. Once right after having the windshield wiper motor replaced but it jumped off easily and recharged after driving. The only after market item is an xm radio. I have noticed that the shift indicator light stay on when parked. Sometimes over night? There is a bad backup light socket. Where do I look first. Also there has been water under the carpets. Could that be the problem? Please suggest before I drownd in a sea of repair bills!
October 21, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The shift indicator light should go out out after 16 -18 min. If it is on the car is awake and drawing on the battery. Use a amp meter installed on the battery and start pulling fuses one at a time until you find what it keeping the car awake.
Start with the fuses in the back of the car, there are also fuses under the passenger seat that can cause problems when wet. Try to address the water leak.

About I month ago the car wouldn't start so I had the battery checked out. A few of the cells ended up being burned up. I replaced the battery and everything was great. Until now. The car appears to be burning out cells in the battery. What could be causing this? It may be totally unrelated but about the same time I noticed the smell of the burning cells the right front parking light stopped working, although the blinker does still work. When I switch the brights on the fog lights turn off and the brights don't come on and every now and then it seem to have slight power loss /surge where all the dash lights dim and the car feels like its going to stall. Any ideas ? Please help!

'bout to blow a gasketComments: I need some advice - before I blow a gasket no pun intended! My BF -and I know his intentions were good - took my 2008 328i to Autozone and had a new battery put in unbeknownst to me. Now I'm no expert mechanic, but I'm educated in cars enough to know that you cannot do that on these cars.  Followup from the Pelican Staff: I would start by checking the instrument cluster fuses. In the front power distribution box, fuses 23, 27, 31 and 46. If the fuses are good you will have to check power and grounds to the cluster when the problem is present. Pin 2 is from the interior light system, (it is a gry/red wire) this may be the illumination circuit. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I can't help without knowing what is missing from the system when you are trying to start it. When your engine doesn’t start you’ll want to check the basics. Check spark, fuel injector pulse and pressure fuel, volume and quality. Once you figure out what is missing, it will be easier to diagnose.

My car a couple days ago wouldnt start at first, it just clicked but no drain on headlights or anything when I had the ignition on start, so I waited a couple minutes and it finally it worked. The next day my car didn't start at all and I had to push start it! I thought I needed a new battery so I went to get a new one and put it in but my car still didn't start, I returned the battery. I got my old one back and checked the charge and it was fine. I got my starter replaced and this is wut the mechanics told me.... My original starter was bad because the power going to my little terminal on the starter was recieving constant power and was burning the motor on my starter because the motor was constantly running on it. So they hooked up my starter and left that wire off my new starter so it would burn the new one out. I was back to push starting my car... Then when I was driving home I felt this jerk like my brakes were depressed slightly and my traction control, and ABS Brakes light popped up in my dash, then my airbag light popped up, then my A/C shut off, then my headlights didn't work, then my radio, then I tried to roll down my window but it seemed like my car didn't have enough juice, then I tried my windshield wipers and it seemed liked they didn't have any juice, then my car just totally died while driving!!!!!!!! Help me!!!! I've already spent 560$ on the starter! And I'm scared how much the rest of this problem could cost me!!!

Followup from the Pelican Staff: I don't think that battery is as you describe. I think on older cars, some were setup similar to that, but not as far as I know on your car. More likely you have a poor ground between the battery and the alternator. Check the resistance using an ohm-meter between the battery negative and the housing of the alternator - should be near zero. If not, you may have a missing or disconnected engine / transmission ground strap. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
BumperComments: The lights in the seat momentaries remain on with ignition off. Based upon what I read here and another sorce, it appears likely that the ignition switch is defective. Just the car has a mind of it's own..Liked to get an idea of what's wrong before I possibly have to take it to the shop if I can't fix the problem myself... Thnks Wayne..
January 25, 2011
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Electrical problems can be difficult to troubleshoot. I'm not sure what you mean by the blinker going on and off, and the light bulb outside not working. Some of those issues can be caused by poor grounding, or some corrosion in the light bulb sockets - I would investigate the bulb socket and see what it looks like. Some sandpaper applied to the contacts within the housing can sometimes do wonders. The radio switch may be a problem with the switch itself, or with the radio. Then again, all of your problems here could be related to a steering wheel wire harness problem. It's anyone's guess at this point. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

RLeedyComments: Hey Wayne.
I've been doing battle with my transmission intermittently going into "safe" mode. I wrote to you for assistance w/ the problem, and I searched through everything I could find online to no avail. I did an oil change as you suggested, had some "experts" tell me I needed a new TCU, and chased throung every sensor and connector on the car.
At long last, I have discovered what the problem was and I wanted to share my discovery. It turned out to be a poor connection on the 4 pin connector at the back of the instrument cluster. This connector carries the signal from the speed sensor to the instrument cluster which feeds the tachometer and the MPG circuitry but also goes back out of the cluster on one of the other connectors to get the speed sensor signal to the main computer. Without the speed sensor signal, the transmission immediately goes into limp mode. A little bit of contact cleaner and a small smear of contact enhancer on the pins have solved my problem.

We just do not have the spark for the car to actually start.

October 27, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: In the world of internal combustion engines, you need three things - fuel, spark, and proper timing to link the two. Sounds like your timing is off, I would guess that the plug wires are mixed up (I've done that before). With fuel and spark the car should start and run at least poorly. If nothing is happening then, there's something probably amiss with the cap, rotor, or spark plug wires. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

prestonComments: ok - lets see what you think about this. The washer pump crapped out recently - it had been working fine. I bought a new pump thinking it was the problem. The new pump and the old one spin fine when connected to 12 volts dc. The wires to the pump show 12v when the switch is pulled on, but the pump does not work when connected. Maybe an amperage problem - I did not check the amp output on the 12v lines. Could the switch be bad? I might just replace it, but $135 for it is pricey for a maybe fix. I think all the wiring is fine otherwise.

Disconnected the neg on the battery, hooked up a multimeter to it in series 50 - dc - volts and it shows a constant draw. REmoved all fuses one by one - no change. Before the last dead battery, the digital clock went all wonky - and stayed all wonky even after the car was shut off. Next day back to normal, but the battery then went dead the day after. Another oddity, the light switch doesn't seem to make any difference whether right in, or pulled to position 2. When running the lights are all always on regardless of position.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like someone did something funky with the electrical system on the car. It's possible that a faulty ignition switch can cause some of these problems, although almost every system on the car runs through the fuse box. Try pulling the fuses all out, one at a time, and leave them out. If the ignition switch is faulty, it may be that more than one circuit is causing the drain. Pulling all of the fuses out will help you figure out which circuits (if there are multiple problems) are causing the drain. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: That's a tough one to diagnose. You might have to take apart the entire dash. I would start by checking all of the relays to make sure that they are not sticking. I'm not familiar with the internals of the A/C control unit on this car (even though I have one), but there may be some relays internal to the unit that may be faulty as well. Just a guess. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

I've reseated every connector on the car. The tachometer/mpg gauge problem is not repeatable. Strangely intermittent.....even sitting still in the driveway.....TCU?
June 12, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: The next step would be to then start tracing back the signal from the DME. There might be some loose solder connections in the connectors of the DME? This is a very difficult problem to solve. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
RleedyComments: My 1995 325iC has a problem I just can't chase down. While driving, my transmission will mshift into limp mode and transmission light will come on. I've checked everything on the transmission and it seems fine.
When I reset the problem by removing the ground wire from the battery, everything will run fine all day and then drop out again.
I checked the code which showed a faulty throttle position sensor. Changed it out w/ no improvement. Another symptom likely related, is that my tachometer and MPG gauge drop in and out of service intermittently.
June 12, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: There's probably a wire from the DME that is generating the Tach signal that is loose or not functioning 100%. I would indeed guess that they are related. I would suggest unseating and reseating all of the connectors on the gauges, and the DME / transmission computer in the front engine compartment. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Since then they have all flickered on and off once or twice at the same time. I have checked all the fuses and they are fine. Are they all connected to the same ground and is that the problem?
June 5, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Maybe? Try running a separate ground connection from one of the ground points on the cluster to the battery or a good ground point on the chassis, and see if that makes a difference? - Wayne at Pelican Parts

May 24, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Check to see if the backing plate behind the needle is coming unglued and rubbing against the needle, causing it to stick. I had this happen on one of my cars. A sticking tach is typically not a sign of a bad circuit board. - Wayne at Pelican Parts

Would central locking system not working cause a no-start condition? Fuel pump cycles on but no pulse to injectors, no spark, no signal at starter. btw,the '98 doors are being used.
P.S. thanx for help on previous power seat question, turned out to be driver's seat switch was missing ground pin, hence no ground.
April 30, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: It's possible the wiring for the later doors is different than the early doors. Unplug the window motors from the harness and see if you get the same results. The central locking system may have the same trouble - doors and switches may be wired differently. In fact, I would almost bet that's the problem. You might want to take the guts out of the old doors and use them instead. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
sleeprrrComments: driver's seat won't work, when I check with a test light on one of the two wires at one of the seat motors, or any of the seat motors, one of the wires will get power, but the other has no ground. Toggling the switch back and forth will toggle power back and forth, but no ground. How do these systems ground? What do you think is the problem?
April 26, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: I'm not 100% sure, but it probably doesn't work on a ground specifically. Test the voltage between the two wires - if the difference is 12V or so, then the problem is with the motors. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
scottComments: My windows work intermittently. I can hear a relay clicking randomly under the driver side - when it clicks once, the windows work, a second click and they dn't. I tried just bypassing the relay to see if that would get power to the windows but that doesn't do it. This is a 94 325i. When they don't work, none of the switched front console or on the rear dorrs have power to them. hought it might be the ground points, but can't find them! Someone suggested comfort relay, but I didn't think 94s had comfort relays.
April 21, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: What you hear clicking could be the body control module. It is responsible for controlling the power windows via your operation of the switches. I would check the power window motor for power and ground when you operate the switch. It should switch polarity when you switch direction on the button. if the switch tests good, but the signal to the motor is faulty, the body control module has failed. - Nick at Pelican Parts

This was about 3 weeks ago, car has not been driven that much. The same shop said they want $900 to change the altenator. Took the battery out and charged it over night at home and only got up to 66% and won't charge any higher. I'm not sure the altenator is the problem. Sounds like the orginal problem was never corrected by the shop and the car has been just running off of the battery. Help!!!
March 20, 2010
Followup from the Pelican Staff: Make sure the positive battery cable was replaced, it should have a BST cable that comes apart in an accident, the whole cable should be replaced, not just the end. The alternator could be faulty and put out enough voltage to keep the battery lite off but not charge the battery.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Many times DME problems are actually wire harness problems, I would check continuity in the wires from the sensors to the DME prior to replacing the DME. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
randyComments: Bobby I changed the DME relay turn electric cooling fan. Next I will change the crankshaft sensor which if damaged will not turn fuel pump and engage the starter. Because the ecu is not getting a signal from crankshaft sensor to turn on fuel pump on and engaging the starter from the ign. If that doesn't work send the DME or ECU to a Specialized ECU Repair. Check on internet to find the repair shop it cost about 300.00 dollars to repair.

TimComments: I had the check engine light on and knew what the problem was and tried to fix it by disconnecting the battery. However, after I did that the gas guage and tach stopped working and the brake fluid and parking brake warning lights came on, and the check engine light was still on. I bought the peake tool to reset everything however it only reset the check engine light and didnt address any of the other problems. Any help, tricks, hints or solutions are appreciated.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like an electrical short somewhere. Start by checking the trunk wiring as shown in the article? - Wayne at Pelican Parts
randyComments: BOBBY did you try jump the starter itself, next the EWS2 jump green/black and yellow/black, if the starter turn over it is something else. Check the main system relay and fuel pump relay. From what I am finding out it might be the crankshaft sender. I have a 318IS doing the same and I will out what it is to repair. What the relay on the DME? I am getting more ideal this than my bentley. I thinking about buying this book they are offering.

Followup from the Pelican Staff: You have to pull the codes from the DME in order to get the full picture. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
LINZComments: I have a '98 323is. The in car info system frequently tells me I have a 'brake circuit' problem, which I think means the brake lights are not working consistently. The previous owner reported having that problem. It's not the bulbs. Since it doesn't happen all the time, it feels like a grounding problem. Can you tell me where tail lights are grounded so I only have to tear out the minimum of interior pannels? Is there anything else that I should try?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: If you are sure you bled the system and no air is trapped, you will have to confirm the thermostat is working properly. if it is and the engine still overheats you may have a faulty head gasket. Pressure test the cooling system. if the system does not hold pressure but there are no external leaks, the head gasket may be faulty, or a possible crack in the head. - Nick at Pelican Parts

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Make sure that the heater is on when you bleed. Also let it bleed out the top for a while, then go drive and come back and bleed again. Did you replace the thermostat? It may be stuck - if stuck, then your top radiator hose will be somewhat cool to the touch. - Wayne at Pelican Parts
