Type 959 (1988)

SuperCar

The 959 was created to meet the international racing rules known as Group B.  Two hundred cars would need to be built and sold to customers to qualify; Porsche made 284.  The engine could be no larger than 4.0 liters unsupercharged, or 2.85 liters with turbos.  Porsche's 935 and 936 racing engines fit the bill perfectly.  An uncompromising supercar, the 959 is equipped with every high-tech engineering feature known at the time.  The aluminum an Kevlar bodywork was bonded to the steel structure of the 911.  The engine employed two turbochargers; one for low-speed operation, with a larger turbo taking over at higher revs.  Electronically-controlled all-wheel drive transmitted the car's 450 horsepower to the ground more effectively.  Many features of the 959 would find their way to the 911 Carrera and Turbo.

Engine:

2850 cc rear-mounted horizontally-opposed six-cylinder, air cooled with water cooled heads, four chain-driven overhead cams, four valves per cylinder

Horsepower: 450 hp
