1972 Porsche Type 917/10 Can-Am

Juggernaut

In 1972, Porsche designed a new car to compete in the Canadian-American Challenge Cup.  The 917/10 was powered by a turbocharged version of the Le Mans-winning 12-cylinder engine  Turbochargers were a decades-old idea, but new to racing.  Two 917/10s, driven by George Follmer and Mark Donohue for Roger Penske's team, dominated the season, winning 6 out of 9 racing, with Follmer as champion.  After the 1972 season, Penske sold this 917/10s to Bobby Rinzler, who raced under the banner of his company's RC Cola.  The new 917/30, driven for Penske by Mark Donohue, would dominate the 1973 season, but not before Rinzler driver Charlie Kemp won the first race at Mosport, and Follmer, driving for Rinzler in '73, won the second race at Atlanta.
