1964 Porsche Type 904 Carrera GTS

Speed with Beauty

For the 1964 GT racing season, Porsche had to build 100 examples of a new car.  To meet this requirement, the Type 904 consisted of fiberglass body moldings bonded to a steel box-section frame.  The new six-cylinder 911 engine would not be available until late 1964, so Porsche fell back on the proven four cam Carrera engine.  In March 1964, the 904 won the three-liter prototype class at Sebring.  In April, 904s chalked up Porsche's fifth victory at the Targa Florio, beating Cobras and Ferraris.  The 904 won the 1964 and 1965 two-liter GT championships for Porsche.  A 904 even finished second in the snowy 1965 Monte Carlo Rallye, demonstrating its all around versatility.  The 904 is the ultimate dual-purpose racing/grand touring car.  It is the last pure racing Porsche which can be driven on the road.
