1960 Type 718/2 Formula 2

Little Big League

In 1958, Porsche experimented with a modified Type 718, competing with full bodywork.  Encouraged by surprising victories against pure Formula 2 racers, the firm designed a proper Formula 2 car.  Porsche engaged Rob Walker's experienced F1 team, with Stirling Moss as driver, to field a factory-supported Type 718/2 for the 1960 season.  Porsche also entered its own cars, driven at various times by Dan Gurney, Graham Hill, John Surtees, Wolfgang von Trips, Edgar Barth, Hans Hermann, Olivier Gendebien and Jo Bonnier.  Stirling Moss won the Aintree 200 race in April, with the Porsche factory cars rounding out a 1-2-3 finish.  In July, Porsche swept the German Grand Prix on the Nürburgring.  Porsche tied with Cooper on points, but thanks to better placings, Porsche won the 1960 F2 Constructor's Championship.
