195/60/15 Tires Shown on the Rear of a 914-6 Conversion
Question: I've heard many different thoughts on this question: What are the options for tires that I can and cannot install on my 914?

Answer:

The standard tire size that came on the 914 was 165x15.  Many people, myself included, think that this is way too small.  Contrary to what you might have heard, the largest tires that can safely fit under a stock 914 is 195/60/15 or 195/65/15.  There are some instances where a 205/60/15 tire will fit under your wheel well, but it will be a tight fit, and may rub eventually.  Be sure to visit a tire shop that will let you try out the fit before you purchase the tire.  Figure 1 shows 195/60/15s on my car.  The 205/60/15s fit but there was less than 1/4" between the inside of the tire and the wheel well.  The Riveria mag wheels sometime used on the 914 have a different offset and will have the larger tire strike the outside fender well.
The best bet is to go to a patient tire store and try on the largest one you can get.  Once again, the sure bet is 195/60/15 - these will almost always fit.
