Pelican Parts: 914 Questions & Answers...

Question: Every time I go over a bump, the steering wheel almost whips out of my hand.  How do I improve this?

Answer:

Avoid going over bumps!  Just kidding.  When the 914 is lowered, the steering rack forms a sharper angle with the A-arms of the suspension.  This increased angle gives the road more 'leverage' when going over a bump.  This effect can be compensated for with an inexpensive "bump steer kit," which consists of two spacers that are placed underneath the steering rack.

Other steering vibration or shaking may be caused by:
  • Misaligned sway bar
  • Bent or damaged wheels
  • Unbalanced tires
  • Worn wheel bearings
  • Worn steering rack or tie rod ends
  • Poor alignment
  • Old shock absorbers
  • Brake calipers not working properly
