| Question: Should I, or shouldn't I step on
the gas when starting my 914? Answer: If the 914 engine is working right, then the motor should fire right up without stepping on the gas. If the car is hot and won't start (1.7L and 2.0L only), you press the pedal all the way down without pumping it until it starts. Giving the car gas doesn't necessarily give the cylinders more gas, it just allows more air to flow through the throttle body. The RPM, vacuum, and temperature of the engine is what determines the fuel mixture under normal operation, so stepping on the gas won't necessarily help. On 1.8L cars, under no circumstances should you step on the gas when starting the car. Excess fuel in the combustion chamber can cause a backfire upon ignition which could damage or destroy the 1.8L air flow sensor. |
