| Question: I sometimes get a
low-pressure oil warning when I go around a sharp corner. What can I do to boost oil
pressure? Answer: There are three things that you can do to boost the oil pressure in your car, and prevent accidental low oil pressure. Firstly, be sure to check your oil often. Old 914s are notorious for burning oil when the engines are nearing their end of life. The 914 has a pressure relief valve which bleeds off oil supply when the pump is running faster than needed. While it won't help in low-RPM cases, adding a higher pressure relief piston and spring to the engine will boost the operating oil pressure of the engine. To increase oil pressure throughout all operating ranges, you can replace your oil pump with a high-capacity oil pump that volumetrically outputs more oil than the stock pump. Note: this oil pump requires a slight modification before it will fit properly in your 914. You must grind down the gear tab by a couple of thousandths, otherwise the pump will crush against the cam gear and damage the bearings when running. This is detailed in the Q&A Section, under "the difference between regular and heavy-duty oil pumps." As a last thought, the 914 oil sump can be slightly overfilled to 4 quarts of oil, and possibly more. There is plenty of room down there, and the sump does sometimes go dry around corners. It is not recommended to add the under carriage oil sump which expands the capacity of the engine sump. This sump has been known to bottom out on the bottom of curbs, and will completely destroy your engine and case if it does. |
