Question: What is the difference between
the 914-6 original oil tank and the aftermarket tank? Answer: The 914-6 original tank, shown in Figure 1, is made of steel, copper plated and painted black and does rust. Inside the tank there is a baffle that prevents the oil from bubbling or foaming when purged back into the tank by the engine. The tank doesn't come with the oil filter console or the filler neck. These must be purchased separately. The original tank fits well in the inside left rear fender near the engine compartment. No modifications to the car must be made in order to make the tank fit, other than drilling the requisite holes. The tank attaches to the four stock 914-6 oil tank lines. The tank is very light, and costs around $650 new. The aftermarket tank is made by The Vellios Company and is a lower-cost alternative to the original tank. Shown in Figure 2, it's made of cast aluminum that is welded together at the seams. The list price for the aluminum tank is $475. The tank is slightly bigger than the factory original, and may require you to either modify the tank (recommended), or clip a fender strut in order to install it into the car (not recommended). The aluminum tank has the late model 911 oil filter console (#OC54) built-in to the tank. Like the stock tank, the filler neck must be purchased separately. The aluminum tank is a bit heavier than the stock 914-6 tank. This aftermarket tank comes with either 'AN' or Metric fittings. If the tank has the 'AN' fittings, then you will need 'AN' oil tank lines and 'AN'-to-metric adapters to connect the lines to the engine. Early aftermarket tanks are rumored to not have the baffle plate inside them that prevents the oil from foaming. |
