Question: Where are the 356 serial numbers located, and how many of them are there?

Answer:

There are three chassis serial numbers on the 356.  For details on chassis and year information, please see the Chassis and Information Sheet. The serial numbers are located in the following areas:
  • Front Trunk.  In the front trunk under the rubber mat and spare tire.  Stamped into the sheet metal.  See Figure 1.
  • Inside driver side door jamb.  A plate with the serial number stamped on it.  See Figure 2.
  • Inside front trunk.  Next to the right side of the gas tank in-between the tank and the wall, on the floor that the tank sits on is a plate that is riveted into the sheet metal.  See Figure 3
  • In engine cooling grille.  Inside the engine cooling grille, the last three digits of the serial number are stamped.  See Figure 4.
  • On front hood.  The last 3 digits of the serial number are stamped on the front hood bracket (welded to the hood) on the inside driver side of the car.   See Figure 5.
  • Inside both doors.  After removing the door panels, the last three digits of the serial number are stamped on the cross-struts that support the door.
  • Engine Serial Number.  Stamped in case right above crankshaft pulley.  See Figure 6.
  • Wheels. Wheels are date stamped underneath the hubcaps, right near the lug-nuts.
  • Transmission.  The transmission model and serial numbers are on the bottom of the case.  See Figure 7.
